They set out to discover the Cameleers (the pioneers of the inland from 1860s to 1920s) cemeteries (including their broken graves) mosques, and monuments. The boys’ sense of belonging shifted enormously through the realisation of the pr...iceless contribution that the Australian Muslim Cameleers made over 60 years, which opened up the Australian interior with much needed transport services and exploration skills. 05.01.2022 Prominent among successful Afghans in the early 1890s were the camel proprietors, Faiz and Tagh Mahomet, whose largess and community spirit were widely recognised in Coolgardie and the Eastern goldfields. They had worked for Elder’s pastoral company in South Australia, and traveled to the goldfields in the hope of establishing their business in Western Australia. The earliest recorded connection with Leonora, is the fact that their company, Faiz and Tagh Mahomet paid rates... on property in the Menzies Shire from 1890?Advertisements were placed in the local newspapers giving details of their rates for carrying goods, and other services offered by Camel Proprietors. The Mahomet brothers continued to ply their trade as far North as Geraldton, and contributed to the hospital and other charities in Coolgardie.
