25.01.2022 "The practice in many classrooms is for early readers to memorise banks of sight words, read predictable texts and use pictures as cues to decipher meaning". Research shows us that students who are instead taught to systematically decode, and better understand the relationship between oral language and the written word, are more likely to develop into confident readers". La Trobe University launches the SOLAR (The Science Of Language And Reading) lab.

17.01.2022 It's been a long while since I've posted here! I hope everyone is keeping safe and sane indoors! It's been a few weeks since we've transitioned to telepractice. Telepractice is simply a way of conducting therapy sessions over phone or videoconferencing. ... I almost never share photos of myself here, but just thought I'd share a silly photo from a few weeks ago, as we all need humour to thrive in difficult situations!!

16.01.2022 News about COVID-19 has been dominating conversations and behaviours everyday. Here's a resource that you may eventually choose to share with your children, to help them understand what's going on, especially if schools/childcares/kinders close. Stay safe!

16.01.2022 In our practice, we often encourage our parents to use emotion-coaching strategies, namely: 1. Name the emotion (eg. "You look frustrated") 2. Validate the emotion and why (eg. "It's must be frustrating that you couldn't draw the picture the way you wanted it) 3. Help them problem-solve/resolve (eg. Either by coaching them to calm down, or take a break, or ask for help, etc) ... This article was an interesting one. My daughter did come back from school with this rhyme, and she uses it often with her little brother. I'm a big believer of validating emotions, so I certainly see value in what she's said, and modifying the rhyme. Take home message: Your feelings are valid, but your corresponding behaviour may not be acceptable.

07.01.2022 On play: "Eight months into this pandemic and parents may be seeing some changes in their children's play. Dolls are being asked to keep their social distance and maybe even use a bit of hand sanitizer. So what does this mean? Should we be worried? No. Actually it's a good sign that they are working through their emotions and it can even offer parents an opportunity to learn what is worrying their child".

03.01.2022 "Communication is key", indeed!

02.01.2022 We do a good deal of reading Dr. Seuss' Fox in Socks in our home, but certainly nowhere near the level of entertainment and expertise as this guy!

01.01.2022 Kelly Clarkson shares her son's experience with having speech therapy. "He had a speech problem because he had this ear problem when he was a baby. We didn't know," says Clarkson, 38. . .... . "We found [out] it was something simple, but it pushed him back almost nine months," she adds. "So we've been working really hard with his speech and he's still doing his speech therapist via Zoom. The big milestone for us is Remy getting to really find out his own personality and his identity, because it's been frustrating for him to not be able to really vocalize his emotion". See more
