25.01.2022 Loved having Jane Tscharkey (bit fitter extraordinaire and fellow equine tooth enthusiast) out on the road with me today . We were like 2 kids in a candy store finding interesting pathology in the mouths we looked in! Jane is 100% on the money when she talks about what can be hiding in seemingly normal mouths .... which is why we are part of the #nopaincheckagain campaign encouraging horse owners to get their horses mouths checked THOROUGHLY.... a small problem left un-treated can become a big issue down the line

25.01.2022 Upcoming Holiday Dates I will be away from Wednesday 18th September ... to Friday 27th September (8 days) on a much needed holiday. If you need any repeat medication prescriptions before I leave next Wednesday please get in touch over the next few days to arrange them before I go - Simone

24.01.2022 With temperatures predicted to soar this week, please make sure you take extra care looking after your horses. Here are some tips to help you prepare: *Ensure ...the total amount of roughage as hay and chaff is maintained at a minimum of 25-30% by weight of the ration. *Reduce the weight and volume of the ration by substituting lower energy containing feeds such as chaff and oats for higher energy dense grains such as barley (extruded preferably) and corn (cracked or extruded preferably). *Aim to achieve a ration containing approximately 3% fat. Horses are able to utilize up to 30% of the diet substituted as fats however, introduction of oils should be done progressively at 30-40mL increments weekly until the desired level is achieved. *Dampen feeds where possible to minimize respiratory burden while also increasing the involuntary daily fluid intake. *Where possible, it is preferable to divide the total daily feed volume of concentrate (grain/protein meals), hay, chaff and electrolytes into three small meals. This prevents excessive overloading of the digestive tract while also minimizing the heat of digestion which may increase core body temperature. *Provide a balanced electrolyte daily with access to plenty of water. Electrolytes can be put into ice blocks to help encourage water in take and help to cool your horse down too. For more information on our great range of Australian owned and made electrolytes please visit our website: https://www.ranvet.com.au//catego/electrolytes-categories/

20.01.2022 Hi Everyone Just to let you all know that things are getting back to normal here after the COVID-19 restrictions. Im booking up fast and June is now ALMOST COMPLETELY BOOKED OUT so if you are needing dentals done please look to July and send me a message with your preferred day and time.... Please also note that due to the high demand for dental bookings Im finding myself limited in my daily emergency capabilities so please be aware that I cant attend to every call that comes thru. Dr Rebecca Dunn from Windrush Vets (0418 726 220) and Dr James Meyer from Fleurieu Equine Vets (1300 046 773) are also available so please give them a call if you find your horse in need of urgent veterinary attention if Im not available

19.01.2022 A massive thanks to a bunch of great Adelaide vets: Dr. James Meyer from Fleurieu Equine Clinic, Dr. Simone Herbert from Mclaren Vale Equine Veterinary Services... and Dr. Tanya Dodi from Windarra Park Vet Clinic for 3 huge days and 8 cases of referral surgeries. Their clients are so lucky to have such dedicated, enthusiastic vets who are hungry to learn more and better service their patients. We finished up a little after midnight on the first day and were kept busy with a heap of interesting cases for the 3 days, finishing just in time to catch an evening flight back to Brisbane. Next time I will pack some warmer clothes, brrrr! See more

19.01.2022 A massive thank you to everyone who has supported me in my McLaren Vale Equine Vet journey thus far... as most of you will know by now after nearly 20 years in general equine practice I'm taking a step up in my career and focusing solely on equine dentistry. This is an emerging area of equine preventative health and something that I'm extremely passionate about. If you would like to continue following me please head over and like my new Facebook page at Adelaide Equine Veterinary Dentistry or follow me on Instagram at adelaide_eq_dentistry. Simone x

19.01.2022 Who would have thought that a horse dancing in a paddock could bring such a smile to my face ... well worth a watch!!

18.01.2022 Hi Everyone Just wanted to let you all know that Im still available 24/7 for EMERGENCIES and MEDICATION REFILLS during this COVID-19 turmoil. Im trying to get as many of the pre-booked dentals done this week as Im concerned that next week we may go into lock down. ... As of tomorrow I wont be taking any new booking for routine work (dentals, castrations, lameness workups etc) until the restrictions are lifted but if you have a sick or injured horse in the coming weeks please phone me for advice or to request an emergency consult. Im very appreciative of those clients who have notified me of family/work situations where theyve potentially had a COVID-19 risk and have rescheduled their appointments - its up to all of us to minimise the spread of this virus and that includes me too! And dont forget that the Equine Veterinary First Aid website (my sideline business... cause Im not busy enough!) is still operational and I can send out bandages/ointments/Epiitalis/first aid kits if needed .... check it out at www.evfa.com.au Stay safe everyone and wrap your horses in bubble wrap!!! Simone

14.01.2022 We would like to thank all of our valued clients for their support over the last 18months. Due to the growth of the practice we need to make a few changes moving forward... In order for Dr Simone to continue to provide excellent service to our exisiting clients we have made the tough decision to close our books for the next 6months. Unfortunately we are not able to take on any new clients at this time however this will be reassessed at the end of the year. We are still ava...ilable for first and second opinion dental cases, however clients outside the service area will be required to bring their horse to Pottery Rd Agistment for treatment. As of July 1st PAYMENT IS DUE AT THE TIME OF CONSULTATION. As we all know, Dr Simone is very accomodating when it comes to answering little questions we may have from time to time... HOWEVER.... Please DO NOT text or call after hours (Mon - Fri/9am - 5pm) unless it is an EMERGENCY

02.01.2022 FEEDING HORSES IN HOT WEATHER: General Management Guidelines Post Excercise: *Remove all tack, particularly those that restrict breathing (girth) and impede hea...t loss from the lower limbs such as bandaging or padding. This will allow a quicker recovery and allow the tendons and lower limbs to lose heat rapidly. *Hose the horse immediately following exercise and scrape off excess fluid to facilitate the evaporative process, particularly around the pulsatile areas of the gut, limbs and neck. Additionally, gentle walking the horse will further aid air flow and encourage evaporation. *Allow the horse to adequately cool prior to transporting. Confinement, particularly with other heated horses will increase the trapped heat within a confined space such as a float or truck and encourage further sweating and therefore valuable electrolyte losses. *Adequate air flow should be ensured whilst travelling. Remove rugs and leg wraps if safe to do so. *Pre-cooling (hosing legs and neck and scraping off excess water) the horse prior to exercise aids in delaying the accumulation of body heat as the core temperature increases during exercise. The evaporation of water from the coat during work also aids to lower the core temperature and may significantly reduce sweat loss under hot and humid conditions. For more information of our great range of products to help with recovery including our two in one Recovery Aid Paste, please visit our website: https://www.ranvet.com.au/products/recovery-drench-paste/

02.01.2022 We hope everyone has a wonderful long weekend and gets lots of pony time in!
