25.01.2022 Curiosity nearly killed the cat Bailey was brought into the clinic when his owners noticed that he was lethargic, not eating and had vomited up a hair tie. Surgery was performed after a mass was felt in his stomach and intestines. Turned out Bailey had a belly full of hair elastics, over 30 and also some in his intestines which was causing a blockage. As it turns out, Bailey is far from alone; many cat owners have experienced this phenomenon with their cats. Eating hair ti...es is a symptom of pica in pets, which is the desire to eat non-food, inedible items. While there are theories about pica in cats being the result of dietary deficiencies, environmental factors, and medical issues, some cats are also just genetically predisposed to this kind of behaviour. After a couple of days in hospital Bailey was feeling much better and able to home. If you think your cat has eaten something they shouldn’t, call the clinic immediately 4655 7664.
