23.01.2022 A new article has stirred a wave of controversy in the medical world; three vascular surgeons published a paper investigating the "prevalence of unprofessional social media content among young vascular surgeons". The male surgeons (28 - 37 years old) searched through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for what they deemed "unprofessional social media content" - such as "holding/consuming alcohol, inappropriate attire, censored profanity, controversial political or religious comm...ents, and controversial social topics". They used the Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery directory to compile a list of graduating trainees, and set about stalking their profiles. A new twitter hashtag, #medbikini, was created in response, showcasing brilliant medical women across the world wearing bikinis, and other "inappropriate attire" as described by the paper. We can't believe this research was approved, let alone published! What are your thoughts?
22.01.2022 **GENDERED IMPACT OF COVID-19** This article from Monash posits that coronavirus has had a disproportionately negative impact on women in STEM. What are your thoughts? Are you feeling the pressure? "Pre-COVID-19, women provided most of the informal care within opposite-sex partnerships. During COVID-19, we've seen implementation of working from home, school closures, and home-schooling. Often, one partner will take on more of this informal care if the other has greater work r...esponsibility or job security; with women more often than not transitioning into the primary caregiver role, if not already. Evidence has already started to emerge that since lockdown measures were introduced, women have spent more time on active childcare and homeschooling than men in the US, UK and Germany. As a result, female academics are competing with many men with a lower domestic workload. One study of scientists found that men were four times as likely as women to have spouses who work part-time or not at all." https://lens.monash.edu//gendered-impacts-of-covid-19-on-t

19.01.2022 Today is International Women’s Day! And to celebrate, we’re featuring one of our very own inspiring medical women from MWS NSW Dr Monique Atkinson is a fifth year Obstetrics and Gynaecology Registrar, now embarking on completing her Certificate of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI) sub-specialty training. She studied at The University of Sydney for both her BSc (Adv) and MBBS (Hons) and then completed her Masters in Reproductive Medicine through UNSW. Her ju...nior years of medical training were all completed at Westmead Hospital. Her passion for reproductive medicine has been fostered through her early work in the Westmead Fertility Centre laboratory during medical school and then as the CREI Fertility Fellow in 2019. Now, Monique works at Monash IVF in Sydney. Monique looks forward to a long career filled with excitement, fun and challenges particularly in the fields of infertility, fertility preservation, paediatric gynaecology and menopause. Monique loves travelling. She was fortunate to take 3 months leave at the completion of her core training to travel around the USA in a motorhome with her husband, Sam. They plan to continue feeding the travel bug by going on regular weekend camping trips in 2020. She focuses on maintaining an active life ensuring to continue to prioritise time with family and friends and enjoys spending her free time hiking or mountain bike riding. Monique has always been lucky to be surrounded by other inspirational, strong-minded women to help her through her career. She joined the Medical Women’s Society as a medical student and was President of MWS NSW in 2019. She appreciates the importance of those embarking on a medical career having contact with more senior doctors to encourage and guide them. #IWD2020 #equalforequal #womeninmedicine
