11.01.2022 Who would like to know a bit about us? John and Kaylea met on 30 December 2014. Since then we have planted about 1500 Avocado trees mostly hass on our 40acre farm at Mount Binga. Kaylea grew all the trees from seeds and grafted the seedlings to Hass in April 2015. We planted our 1500 trees over three years 2015, 2016 and 2017. Sadly the 400 trees we planted in 2017 failed due to the hot summer drought. But fortunately we have now 1000 producing trees. Last year we got hit wi...th a large hail storm which took most of this years crop. The trees recovered through spring and summer and are now looking good. We are not using chemicals on our trees. We use a mix of rock based fertilisers, manure, mulch, micro biology. We use a minimal amount of nitrate fertilisers as foliar top ups which keeps our soil biology happy and healthy. We believe that growing a bio diverse range of plants in and around the trees encourages soil microbes and canopy insect diversity. Different plants also have different nutrient making and storage abilities. We slash the plants and they turn into mulch which the microbes eat which then feeds our trees and the fruit. We use an organic fungicide that we make on farm. This helps fight any mould and mildew on the trees and fights bad fungi and bacteria in the soil. Its called Anolyte. We also use our Anolyte solution in our home for disinfecting and bleaching. Its very safe to use for people who prefer natural ways to keep clean ans sterile kitchens and bathrooms. Also good for getting fresh fruit and veges to last longer. John has started his Pastured Raised Egg enterprise. Starting with a trial number of 60 birds we have found that the wedge tail eagles are a threat. We hope to purchase a Merema Dog to protect them. John is planning on completing a PROOF (Pasture Raised on open fields) course which will allow him accreditation to sell eggs as truely free range. Then we will scale up our flock. We are also establishing organic chemical free cut flowers. Comprising of Proteas, Leucospermums and Luecadendrons. We have two beautiful young children who have kept us on our toes. We hope you have learnt something new about us. We look forward to the future and hope you can join in on our Journey at My Little Garden. See more
