03.01.2022 On September 7, 2000, Australian South Sea Islanders were officially recognised as a distinct cultural group by the Queensland Government through a signed recog...nition statement. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the signing of this historic document, which recognises the injustices and discrimination this community has suffered for over a century. Mackay is home to the largest population of Australian South Sea Islanders and this week we will be recognising their contribution to our region by flying their flag proudly beside the council building, colouring the fountain blue and lighting up the council administration building in the colours of the ASSI flag. There is also a Sweet Anarchy - White Gold Banners Display in the City Centre, which has been supported by a council RADF grant.

01.01.2022 GREG SUTHERLAND HONOURED Proud moment this morning at the official opening of the Mackay Ring Road as the major crossing of the Pioneer River was named the Greg... Sutherland bridge. Greg was my second cousin and a great stalwart of Mackay and North Queensland. There has never been a stronger advocate for the community than Greg - not just his fellow South Sea Islander people, but everybody in the region. He would go out of his way to help anyone he could and he did it with enormous passion. See more
