23.01.2022 This week we're featuring the book, 'Give Your Dog a Bone' by Dr. Ian Billinghurt. "It is THE book, which ignited theRAWnutritional revolution in pet health, that began in 1993 and continues today. This revolution involved the return of dogs (and cats) to their evolutionary RAW diet. Give Your Dog a Bone outlines the simple steps any pet parent can take to set their dog(s) on the path to health. All you need do is follow the very simple nutritional guidelines outlined in... this book. This is the basic RAW handbook that any potential RAW feeder requires. It ignores the complications that so many modern raw feeding gurus use to confuse the novice raw feeder. To feed a dog for health, all you need to know isWhat RAW and WHOLE and ACTUAL FOODS need to be fed and HOW MUCH. None of this constitutes the proverbial Rocket Science it is just good old fashioned COMMON-SENSE. What worked in 1993 works today (and tomorrow!). Nutrition it’s absurdly simple" Here's the link back the book purchase on Dr. Billinghurst's website. https://buff.ly/39aemcg Dr Ian Billinghurst

23.01.2022 We're onto a good thing: Australia's pet owners feed more raw Veterinary and pet nutritional scientists surveyed 3,673 dog and cat owners in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Here's what they found: Australia has the highest rate of feeding raw foods, (even more than the US) while Canada had the highest rate of feeding commercial foods...... However, one of the co-authors did have this warning: Probably the most common nutritional imbalances that occur with unbalanced diets, both raw and cooked, are imbalances of dietary calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D causing metabolic bone disease - especially in young, growing animals. (Which is why we created the bestie balancers just quietly.) https://veterinaryrecord.bmj.com/content/186/19/643.full
23.01.2022 5 star review from Yasmin S.: "Clearly what is Best! - Amazing It took a few days (perhaps a week) to transition both cats over to bestie. After this they were really enjoying their meals. Their litter required less cleaning and they were not drinking nearly as much water. As a cat lover I felt great knowing that everything they were consuming was contributing positively to their health and wellbeing"... https://bestiekitchen.com//the-allrounder-balancing-supple
22.01.2022 WHAT DO YOU DREAM OF DOING WITH YOUR DOG? I recently spoke with Eve McKenzie, from Dogaholics - Dog Training about anxiety in dogs and cats. She told me she often has owners come to her, with their new puppy or dog, and they're disappointed. Why? Well, the life they imagined with the dog, isn't the reality. ... I think what happens is, when we get a dog we have some images in our head about what we think that dog will be like and what we think that dog will do for us, and what life will be like with the dog. I have many owners come and say, look, I got a dog because I want to walk the dog every day and I want to go camping with the dog and I want to go around Australia with the dog and then here's this poor dog who is like hiding behind the chair. It takes people out a little while to actually understand that that dog may actually not be able to do what you expect, and that is just the reality of it, and so there's almost like a grieving process that people go through to go. Actually, I'm not going to be able to do that with my dog. There are probably a lot of other things you can do with your dog, but they may not be those particular things. Interesting perspective huh, who knew? Have a listen to more about what Eve has to say, over on Pet Parent with a Brain. https://www.facebook.com/groups/PETPARENTWITHBRAIN/permalink/3179081095488937/
22.01.2022 As seen on... (And thanks The Publicity Princess for help getting there)
22.01.2022 What is cat containment? Containing your cat means completely preventing them roaming from your property at any time, day or night. This can be achieved by keeping your cat indoors, or a combination of indoors and having a secure outdoor enclosure, or cat-proof fencing around an outdoor area. In other words, keeping your cat safe at home and not letting them roam. In some areas cats are required by law to be contained. Please check the requirements in your area with your lo...cal council. Why should I keep my cat contained? By keeping your cat safe at home you will be: reducing the risk of them getting sick, being hurt or dying in an accident enjoying more quality time together reducing the risk they will stray and be lost or impounded by the council minimising the risk they will harm or kill other animals preventing them from interacting with undesexed roaming cats avoiding problems with your neighbours giving them a better chance to enjoy a longer, healthier life. Will my cat be happy staying at home? Your cat is more likely to settle in to a contained lifestyle if you keep them at home from the beginning. Kittens generally adapt well to an indoor lifestyle if they have been contained from an early age. Newly acquired cats should always be contained during the settling-in period anyway, as they may run off or become lost if allowed outside. If you have an existing cat who roams, then try to introduce them to being contained gradually (e.g. initially keep them inside at night, then gradually increase the time they are contained during the day). It is essential to provide lots of distractions like new hiding and resting areas in the house, a variety of toys, and extended play sessions every day. The main things your cat needs to keep them happy and healthy are choice and variety in these five basic resources. 1. Resting and hiding places 2. Food 3. Water 4. Toileting areas (litter trays) 5. Places to scratch Thanks RSPCA for this content! See more via their website: https://buff.ly/3fyuZ2J

19.01.2022 I was researching our DOG LOVERS GUIDE TO LIVING WITH AN ANXIOUS DOG, and I came across this...it could be the cheapest and easiest thing you do for travel-related anxiety. It turns out that if your dog gets agitated when travelling, in the car for instance, then lavender may help. In a research trial with 32 dogs, with a history of travel-induced excitement, aromatherapy in the form of diffused... lavender was shown to be effective. Dogs spent significantly more time resting and sitting and less time moving and vocalising during the experimental condition. https://bestiekitchen.com//the-dog-lover-s-guide-to-living

15.01.2022 DO YOU EXPECT YOUR DOG TO BE A STATUE??? A statue? Say what? I recently spoke with Eve McKenzie, from Dogaholics - Dog Training about anxiety in dogs and cats.... One really interesting thing that came out of that, was owner expectations. Eve told me that sometimes people have unrealistic expectations of dogs: "I want the dog to sit in the backyard from 7:00 o'clock to 6:00 o'clock at night while I go to work, and I don't want the dog to do anything. I tell them, thats not a dog; thats a statue." Eve says the other thing people need to understand, is that anxiety isn't something that the dog has control over. People think, when I go to work and my dog digs up the plants and my dog eats the deck, it's that the dog has done that on purpose, because I went to work and the dogs angry "What I want people to understand is that anxiety is not a voluntary sort of state or behaviour that a dog puts themselves in. Just like it's not with human; I can't put myself into a state of anxiety, just like that. It's about chemicals in the brain. Eve wants people to understand that with this behaviour, your dog is trying to tell you that they need help. Have a listen to more about what she has to say, over on Pet Parent with a Brain. https://www.facebook.com/groups/PETPARENTWITHBRAIN/permalink/3179081095488937/
15.01.2022 How old is your dog...really? You've probably heard that old rule of thumb, to multiply your dog's age by 7, to get the equivalent age in human years. Well now, researchers from the University of California have come up with a new method - that's a whole lot more accurate they say. ... The link to the actual study is below, but in essence, they're saying that it's become clear that a prominent molecular alteration during ageing is remodelling of the DNA methylome. They then developed a model system for epigenetic ageing, using a specifically designed CpG oligo-capture system to generate high quality methylation data that align directly to human methylomes. You can read more in the research itself, but let's cut to the equation. For instance, it turns out that our 21 year old dog (in dog years) Alfy is really only 79 in human years! Not over 140 years as the old formula would have suggested.... And here's how to work that out: human age = 16 ln(dog age) + 31 For iPhone calculators, first input the dog's age. Then click the natural logarithm (or ln) function. Multiply that result by 16. Then add 31. (To get the scientific calculator, turn the phone on its side.) For Google calculators, first click "ln." Then input the dog's age. Multiply the result by 16, and add 31. https://www.cell.com/cell-syste//S2405-4712%2820%2930203-9

11.01.2022 Here's a beautiful older boy (Conner) about to start his health jellies... In case you're wondering what that's all about: Our research-based, vet-formulated daily health jellies, support your dogs health, from pup to senior, right from your own kitchen.... With jellies for anxiety, doggy dementia, puppy and adult stress, bad breath and more, this is the daily health supplement in an easy-to-feed jelly format. They arrive to you as a health jelly mix. Herbs, fruit and vege powders, plant extracts (and in a couple of very rare cases, naturally-derived vitamins), are combined with Australian beef gelatin. Youll simply add the mix to water, stir and pour into a container and let it set in the fridge. After a couple of hours, pop the jelly out of its pack, and feed in the meal or on its own. Simple. KIND OF LIKE THAT HUMAN-KIND JELLY WE MADE AS KIDS, BUT HEALTHY AND FOR DOGS!

10.01.2022 THE LOW DOWN ON ANXIETY - AND HELPING KITTENS AND PUPPIES SOCIALISE WAY EARLIER THAN YOU THINK I recently spoke with Eve McKenzie, from Dogaholics - Dog Training, who works with cats and dogs on anxiety (among other things)! 09.01.2022 Has your older dog started to change? How to recognise canine cognitive dysfunction and what to do about it. You might think that as your dog gets older, its inevitable that they start to do a few odd things. But theres actually a difference between normal ageing and pathological ageing and it can start much earlier than we previously thought. 09.01.2022 Happy Friday! A friendly reminder to keep your pooches cool and calm from today and over the weekend as the mercury is going to soar into 40+ degrees for some states. Don't take your dog out for a walk until after the sun has gone down - the ground is still very hot and will burn their paws. If you can't keep the back of your hand on the ground for 5-seconds before heading off then stay at home and play tug-o-war inside. Here's some other tips and advice to keep your pet... cool over the weekend. Freeze containers of water to make big iceblocks for them to play with and chew on. Always provide more than one drinking bowl on hot days in case one gets tipped over and have the bowls in shade so the water can stay as cool as possible. Slip-Slop-Slap - Dogs and cats with smooth/thin hair and white-coloured ears or noses can be more susceptible to skin cancers so consider a pet friendly sunscreen from your local pet store. Signs of Heat Exhaustion - Dogs (in particular) suffering from heat exhaustion will usually show the following symptoms: Restlessness Panting Increased respiratory rate Excess salivation Vomiting Diarrhoea If you your pet is showing any of the above signs wrap them up in a wet towel and head straight to the vet. Close the blinds, crank the fans or the air-conditioning and stay hydrated everyone!
08.01.2022 Only 4 sleeps to go until Christmas! It's a time for friends and family but don't forget to reach out to those in need, going through a rough time or simply spending time by themselves. It's all about who's 'present', not just the 'presents.
08.01.2022 Do you have an active dog breed? Are you running out of ideas for training or getting bored just going down to the park each day? Why not get involved in Flyball!? WHAT IS THIS FLYBALL YOU SPEAK OF? - "Flyball is the fastest sport on four paws! Nicknamed "Drag Racing for Dogs", flyball is a relay race between two teams of four dogs. Each dog on the team has to jump over 4 hurdles, trigger and retrieve a ball from a specially designed flyball box at the other end of the ...lane and then return over the hurdles before the next dog on the team has their turn. The catch? If one of the dogs doesn’t complete their run cleanly, that dog has to run again! The first team to have all 4 of their dogs complete their turn successfully wins." IS MY DOG RIGHT FOR FLYBALL? - Flyball is not restricted to the working dog breeds virtually ALL breeds of dogs can excel at flyball. There are Border Collies, Kelpies, Australian Shepherds, Whippets, Koolies, Cattle Dogs, Weimaraners, Labradors, Jack Russells, Foxies, Poodles (Toys, Minis and Standards), Papillons, German Shepherds, Pulis, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Staffies, various terrier breeds and even Irish Wolfhounds have been involved in flyball competitions. AWESOME! HOW DO I GET INVOLVED? - The best starting point for anyone interested in Flyball is to visit the Australian Flyball Association website and look at the information on getting started and how to find a local club. Not only does your dog need to learn how to play flyball, the handler also needs to learn the basics, such as where to stand, where to release the dog for crossovers, and how to encourage the dog back to you as quickly as possible. Lots of people also get started by watching flyball at a Show or demonstration and talking to experienced flyballers at the event. Check out the clip below of a professional Flyball competition for some inspiration but if you would just like to spend an hour or so of quality time with your pet once a week and you feel the desire for a bit of an adrenalin rush and some social interaction with your local community, then why not give it a go? https://buff.ly/3fpUVxp Send us your thoughts/pictures/videos of your pooch participating in Flyball, we'd love to feature you on our socials. 04.01.2022 5 star review from Sharyn Q.: "Great for my cats - I found using Bestie for Cats great. My lazy persian had a weight problem and was in danger of getting Diabetes so she was trialled on Bestie for cats. Both cats eat a mostly raw diet anyway but adding Bestie has helped keep them satisfied and the Persian has lost a Kilo in weight following the Bestie Plan. The bonus for me is she had constant diarrhoea that I had tried everything to help but since starting Bestie she has returned to normal. That was a very unexpected bonus. The cats are happy eating it and it seem to be working very well for them so I will continue to use it." https://bestiekitchen.com//the-allrounder-balancing-supple
