25.01.2022 Dear Melbourne, Please dont feel blue. Julia Bairds magnificent Phosphorescence is here to cheer. As the Australian wrote recently, reading this is Like spending an evening with a wonderful friend, with unlimited time and a glass of good wine in hand.... A beautiful and rallying read.

24.01.2022 A regram from our own post a few weeks ago when we looked at the 12 bestseller novels during CV-19 Lockdown (i). All we can say is: Groundhog Day. (And these beauties are still selling well)

22.01.2022 Where other practitioners of the genre revel in chaosthe coarse spectacle of society unravellingAlam keeps close to his characters, who, like insects in acrylic, remain trapped in a state of suspended unease.

18.01.2022 What a tie-in cover! With a very big thankyou to my always wonderful husband Pete for organising the surprise framing.

18.01.2022 Is the industry’s purpose to make the widest array of viewpoints available to the largest audience possible? Is it to curate only the most truthful, accurate, and high-quality books to the public? Or is it to sell as many books as possible, and to try to stay out of the spotlight while doing so? Should a publisher ever care about any part of an author’s life besides their ability to write a book?

17.01.2022 The new novel by award-winning UK crime writer Louise Candlish is our weekend tip for crime fiction buffs. Writes the Daily Mail, After the phenomenal success of Our House, Candlishs new book is bound to be a bit of an event. This plot is very different, but Candlishs talent for youngish characters beset by contemporary sins is intact.

16.01.2022 And we are baking!

15.01.2022 The 2020 Miles Franklin Award winner will be announced later this week - and we are honoured to have copies of the six fine shortlisted novels in store. Just let us know if youd like all or any of these books

10.01.2022 Because of Lockdown, we will be closed tomorrow (Sunday). Its been a tough decision to make (Sundays are such chilled, fun days in the shop). But we found during the previous Lockdown, people really tend to stay at home on Sundays, and use the day to regroup, rest and recharge. And so with hardly anyone around, we are going to do the same - regroup after a very disconcerting week, rest (because we all need to stay healthy), and recharge (because Week Two of Lockdown Chapter Two will benefit by everyones focus and energy and goodwill). Enjoy your Sunday x

10.01.2022 We wish all our Melbourne bookshop community a safe Lockdown Chapter ii and hope you and your loved ones our best wishes, good health, and positivity during this anxious time. 08.01.2022 If you havent yet discovered writer Olivia Laing, please venture on the journey. Her non-fiction writing and her essays on culture in particular prompt and provoke. We love her, and we love this new collection of pieces which argue the importance of art in our lives. Writing in the Guardian at the start of the CV-19 crisis Laing maintained, Theres so much thats frightening, so much thats wrong. But if this virus shows us anything, its that were interconnected, just... as Dickens said. We have to keep each other afloat, even when we cant touch. Art is a place where that can happen, where ideas and people are made welcome. Its a zone of enchantment as well as resistance, and its open even now. Highly recommend this beautiful hardcover @olivialanguage @guardian @w.w.norton #olivialaing #whyartmatters #culture #whyhumanitiesmatter #essays #essaycollection #goodread #bookswelove #instabook #instagrambooks #bookstagram See more

08.01.2022 Melbourne, we will find the light at the end of the tunnel

07.01.2022 Homeland Calling is a collection of poems created from hip-hop song lyrics that channel culture and challenge stereotypes. Written by First Nations youth from communities all around Australia, the powerful words display a maturity beyond their years. Edited by award-winning author and poet Ellen van Neerven, and brought to you by Desert Pea Media, the verses in this book are the result of young artists exploring their place in the world, expressing the future they want for themselves and their communities. Check out many of the original songs and music videos on Spotify or YouTube. All royalties from the sale of the book will go towards Desert Pea Medias training and development programs in Indigenous communities.

06.01.2022 Stay healthy and safe, everyone. Look out for one another, stay connected, go for plenty of walks, and make the most of simple pleasures. And if you ever feel alone, just call in to the bookshop - or any of our beautiful Hawksburn Village shops - for a browse and a chat. We would all love to see you

06.01.2022 When words matter..... We love this new book by British linguistics guru, writer and language blogger Paul Anthony Jones. The Cabinet of Calm - collection of 50 of the English languages most obscure words and phrases, each one selected to provide some calmative food for thought in difficult times, is how Jones describes his latest work. A thoughtful gem for these concerning times

04.01.2022 At 4pm today the winner of the 2020 Miles Franklin literary award will be announced. You can see the shortlist by swiping across. For now, we would like to once again acknowledge the extraordinary foresight of Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, one of the great figures of Australian cultural history. Born in country NSW in 1879, Franklin rocketed to fame with the 1901 publication of her most famous novel My Brilliant Career. Over the next five decades she worked in the US a...nd the UK as a writer, war worker, and womens rights advocate before returning home in the 1930s where the promotion of Australian literature became her focus. Franklin never married and had no children and upon her death in September 1954, left instructions for the residue of her estate - nearly valued for probate at 9000 - to be used to found an award for Australian literature. The award was first presented in 1957 and remains one of this countrys greatest artistic achievements. We honour her legacy @milesfranklinliteraryaward #literaryprize #award #milesfranklin See more

03.01.2022 Tabletop Tuesday begins today with a book on manners for the modern family by mother-of-five Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece. The publishers note reads: The founder of a successful childrens clothing line, author of an influential parenting blog, and mother of five children, Marie-Chantal of Greece is constantly asked how she manages to do it allraise her kids and run her business while leading an active social life. So many of these queriesabout proper etiquette for children in our fast-paced, technology-centred worldled her to recognise the need for a modern handbook on childrens manners.
