25.01.2022 Is there anything better than one of our fixed wing aircraft looking into a stunning sunset? Thank you to one of our patient transport drivers, Michael, for snapping this pic at our Bankstown hangar! #CareFlightStaffSnaps
25.01.2022 For this #CareFlightCharacters profile, were taking a trip to scenic Port Macquarie to meet one of our amazing ground transport nurses, Kylie. Awarded a Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal when she was deployed as a nursing officer as part of the Australian Defence Force response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami, Kylie also has extensive experience as an emergency registered nurse and clinical nurse consultant in outback telehealth. As a ground transport nurse for CareFlights Pa...tient Transport Service, Kylie is regularly on the road delivering the highest quality clinical care transferring locals living in and around Port Macquarie to higher levels of healthcare that arent available in the region. There is no such thing as an average day, in fact the only constant in my workday as a nurse at CareFlight is the uniform I wear! As a registered nurse working on shifts, I find that there is no pattern to the number of people we see, or the type of patients we care for. We can go for a few days with no patients and suddenly in one day I can be caring for a newborn and its mother, a teenager who needs extensive surgery for an accident and a lovely woman in her 80s who is on her way to heart bypass surgery. With 2020 marking the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, Kylie believes that the COVID-19 pandemic has shone a spotlight on the essential work that nurses and midwives do in the community. Not only are we workers who are on the frontline actively combatting the virus, but we are there for you at so many stages of life, right from birth all the way to the end. Nursing is a unique role that allows me to see the full journey that a patient goes through: being with them in the beginning when they begin their course of treatment and seeing them again when theyre on the mend. It is incredibly rewarding to get to know members of the local Port Macquarie community and know that I played a role in their road to recovery.
25.01.2022 A 20-year-old man riding a dirt bike has crashed into a tree on his Sackville, Hawkesbury, property. He sustained suspected chest injuries. CareFlights Rapid Response Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance shortly before 3.45pm and landed 10 minutes later in a nearby paddock. NSW Police escorted CareFlights clinical team to the scene of the incident where NSW Ambulance paramedics had provided initial treatment for the man. CareFlights specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance cr...itical care paramedic performed a clinical assessment on the patient and conducted an ultrasound before administering pain relief. CareFlights clinical team continued providing care as the patient was airlifted in a serious but stable condition to Westmead Hospital.
25.01.2022 Yesterday, we were proud to announce our partnership with AMSL Aero to deliver Vertiia, an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This innovation could herald in a new era for healthcare services, helping us save lives and improve healthcare outcomes for thousands of people across Australia. CareFlight’s team of aeromedical experts are providing advice and input into the aircraft design to ensure it is fit for patient care. Watch this video to take a look a closer look at this innovation.

24.01.2022 Five years ago, the CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter flew to the scene of an incident where 13-year-old Nathan Gremmo was critically injured while crossing the road. While our aeromedical team worked hard to keep Nathan alive, he tragically passed away the next day and became a life-saving organ donor for five adults and a baby. Today, CareFlight honours Nathan life and we are encouraging all Australians to kickstart the conversation with your loved ones about organ donat...ion. Make your decision count this Jersey Day by joining the Australian Organ Donor Register at www.donatelife.gov.au. Registration is quick and easy, and its an important decision that can save lives. #makeitcount #donatelife #jerseydayau

23.01.2022 We can’t decide which photo of our majestic King Airs in Darwin is our favourite! Our Beechcraft Super King Airs cruise at 500km per hour with a maximum range of almost 3,000km. They can land on dirt, gravel or grass runways and have an infrared camera on the nose for sighting animals and obstacles on runways at night. Our crews can transport two stretchered patients in this aircraft at any time of the day or night. Thanks to one of our flight nurses, Tom, for taking these spectacular snaps of the King Airs basking in the Top End sunset!
23.01.2022 We are incredibly proud of one our Board Directors, Professor Leonard Notaras, who was recognised on the Queen's Birthday honours list for his work with the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre setting up the Howard Springs COVID-19 quarantine facility. Everyone at CareFlight is proud to have an Officer of the Order of Australia working with us on our board!

22.01.2022 Late last year thanks to the generosity of Transurban, CareFlight hosted a MediSim trauma care workshop for first responders at our Westmead base. Navigating their way through hyper-realistic simulations, participants learnt how to manage patients impacted by trauma events such as vehicle, chainsaw and ladder incidents that can cause catastrophic haemorrhaging, compromised airways, as well as burn and crush injuries. They also got the opportunity to practice how to work as a ...cohesive unit with multi-agency first responders. Acknowledgments to personnel from Transurban, Glenorie Rural Fire Brigade, Maroota Rural Fire Brigade, Wisemans Ferry Rural Fire Service, St John Ambulance and NSW SES Hawkesbury Unit for attending our MediSim workshop and learning the skills to save lives in the minutes after an accident. Thank you again to Transurban whose support allowed us to deliver our life-saving workshop at no cost to emergency services personnel.

22.01.2022 A 13-year-old boy has sustained neck, arm and suspected spinal injuries when his go kart collided with a kangaroo at a Marrangaroo raceway. The teenager lost consciousness from the impact. CareFlight’s Rapid Response Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance at 1:55pm from the Westmead hangar and landed 35 minutes later within the grounds of the raceway. NSW Ambulance paramedics were providing initial treatment for the patient. CareFlight’s specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance cr...itical care paramedic performed a clinical assessment on the patient, including an ultrasound, and administered pain relief. The clinical team prepared the boy for flight transfer to hospital, while undertaking spinal precautions. The patient, with his mother, was airlifted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a stable condition under ongoing treatment from CareFlight’s clinical team.
21.01.2022 Hailed as the fairy godmother of CareFlights registrars is our medical coordinator, Linda, who is responsible for organising our doctors in New South Wales. A key part of her role involves balancing the multitude of needs and conflicting schedules from CareFlights doctors and refining everything into a ship-shape roster. Having been with CareFlight for almost 10 years, Linda enjoys working closely with our team of doctors and making their time with us run as smoothly as po...ssible. I am lucky enough to know some of the most passionate clinicians and watch their journey from wide-eyed registrars who are unsure of what they have gotten themselves into, to fully-fledged doctors who proclaim that they have the best job in the world, said Linda. They are all wonderful clinicians who I would entrust with caring for anyone in my family. In addition to everything that she juggles, Linda also makes sure that one of CareFlights most sacred traditions is enforced: all rostered doctors on the CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter MUST bring in cake for the rest of the crew to enjoy. My password to access the hangar is usually I come bearing gifts and I greet the crew with some chocolates. We get the occasional doctor who brings in a cheats pre-made packaged brownie from Coles, and then there are other doctors who truly shine with homemade pavlovas. Thanks to Lindas contribution to CareFlight, we are able to ensure that our specialist doctors are ready to fly to the rescue and serve the community whenever you need us.
21.01.2022 CareFlight’s registrars had a busy day undertaking scenario training where they learnt how to respond to patients injured in train-related incidents. Working closely with personnel at Sydney Trains and Fire and Rescue NSW, our registrars crawled under the trains to access, treat, intubate and retrieve ‘patients’ from the tracks. Hyper-realistic scenario days like this allow our doctors to familiarise themselves with these confronting situations and unique risks beforehand in ...a controlled environment. As a result of already processing these incidents, CareFlight’s doctors are able to provide the highest level of care should they respond to situations where patients are trapped and injured in a train accident.
21.01.2022 Following the wet and rainy weather that has awashed New South Wales, a tree in Wisemans Ferry has fallen and crushed a caravan, trapping a 26-year-old woman. The woman sustained injuries to her neck and lower limbs. CareFlight’s Rapid Response Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance at 4:45pm and was able to navigate the stormy weather to land in an oval close to the scene of the incident 20 minutes later. Thank you to the emergency services personnel from NSW Ambulance, the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW who safely extricated the woman while CareFlight’s specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic performed a clinical assessment on the patient.
21.01.2022 We are looking for support from Australian businesses big and small so we can continue to save more lives. To have your business name flying high with CareFlight and maybe even your logo on the helicopter, visit careflight.org/s/corporate-support/partner-with-careflight/
21.01.2022 Did you know that it only takes the CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter 3-4 minutes to be in the air from time of tasking? This means that we can arrive swiftly at the scene of an incident to provide lifesaving care when you need us most!
19.01.2022 The past year has been an extraordinary year for CareFlight and we have emerged from 2020 after overcoming many unprecedented challenges. 19.01.2022 When Matt Ganes mustering helicopter came crashing down on a remote station in the Northern Territory in 2015, he was left with a broken pelvis and a serious brain injury. CareFlight launched a complex rescue mission to travel the 750 kilometres to reach him. Today, he's not only back on his feet, but he's recently married his wife and is back flying his helicopter. Now the Katherine resident has reunited with the CareFlight crew that saved his life to walk 750 kilometres t...o raise funds for the organisation. 18.01.2022 What is your 2021 new year’s resolution? One of our registrars on the CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter has committed herself to painting everyday and we absolutely love her latest piece of art! #DoctorPicasso
18.01.2022 The crew on the CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter is taking spring cleaning to a whole new level with a thorough washing of the helicopter. Everyone on the crew from the pilot and aircrew officer to specialist doctor trained in trauma care gets involved in this weekly ritual. Not only does the weekly clean keep the helicopter spick and span, but it also ensures that it is working to its full performance and ready to fly to the rescue whenever you need us.
18.01.2022 As a health organisation we appreciate the importance of keeping physically fit through a balanced diet and regular exercise. That’s why we signed up to the 15 Minute Exercise Challenge, and for the past five weeks our teams have been battling it out running, walking, playing tennis, rowing, cycling and dancing. It’s a simple concept. Your business registers and employees commit to at least 15 minutes of exercise each and every day as a small team. Teams battle it out to take... out the win. At CareFlight we are competitive so as we reach the home stretch of the challenge, our teams are increasing their daily exercise totals. It’s a lot of fun, and taking part is easy. Visit 15min.com.au to find out how you and your business can take part!
17.01.2022 CareFlight is proud to have partnered with the University of Tasmania to deliver simulated trauma and pre-hospital training for medicine and paramedicine students. In an inter-agency effort with local emergency responders from the Tasmania Fire Service and Tasmania SES, we hosted a two-day workshop which featured high fidelity simulation-based training. Participants undertook various practical skills stations, exploring how to manage catastrophic haemorrhage, airways manageme...nt, suspected spinal injuries, splinting and packaging of patients and assessment of trapped casualties. CareFlight’s next-gen healthcare education program aims to equip attendees with the leadership, teamwork, situational awareness and communication skills that will help them respond to traumas that occur outside of a hospital environment. Congratulations to all the students and emergency services who successfully responded to each day’s mass casualty scenario, complete with live casualties and mannequins!
17.01.2022 In celebration of NAIDOC Week, CareFlight invited Darug Cultural Educator and Artist, Chris Tobin to our national headquarters to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 16.01.2022 For this #CareFlightCharacters profile, were taking you to Newcastle to meet Genevieve Davey, one of our amazing Ground Support Nurses who joined us two years ago. After working a nursing career in ICU, coronary care, midwifery and emergency units, Gen joined CareFlight and enjoys talking to patients that she accompanies on their hospital transfers to allay any fears, especially with COVID-19 changing the healthcare landscape. We have quite a few patients who are frightene...d of going to hospital because of the pandemic. I usually tell them it's safer than going to the supermarket as we at CareFlight and the hospitals we visit are taking all precautions to make sure our patients are not at risk. At CareFlight, were constantly checking that we have the right PPE and are meticulously cleaning all surfaces after we transport our patients, said Gen. Despite being one of the friendliest faces in Newcastle, Gen has an adventurous spirit in her personal life that toes the line of gutsiness. Gen also leads a double life as a full-time Intensive Care Paramedic and has worked in conflict zones in developing counties like the Solomon Islands, Timor and Iraq mentoring medical teams on trauma injuries. She is also an avid trekker, having challenged herself to the landscapes in Nepal, the Kokoda Track and Sandikan-Ranau Death March trek.
14.01.2022 As we farewell 2020 and herald in the new year, CareFlight is excited to see how we can deliver our mission to save lives, speed recovery and serve the community with you. Wishing everyone a happy and safe New Year!
14.01.2022 Whether youre at home with your family, working on an acreage in the Blue Mountains or jet skiing on the coast, CareFlights aeromedical crews are ready to take action when and where you need us. Earlier today, the aeromedical crew on the CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter attended to an incident where a man had fallen from scaffolding onto concrete at a construction site in Penrith. Thanks to the joint efforts of Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Ambulance, the worker was safely extricated and assessed by our specialist doctor.
14.01.2022 I spy with my little eye the Top End Rescue Helicopter in the sky! Yesterday afternoon, CareFlights Top End aeromedical team winched a woman from Litchfield National Park after a snake bit her on the ankle twice. The woman was bushwalking with a group when the incident occurred. From the air and using the geocoordinates provided by the bushwalking party, CareFlights helicopter crew was able to locate the patient and her party and direct rangers to them.... As there was nowhere to land, CareFlights flight doctor and flight nurse winched down to the group and assessed the womans condition. The patient was then winched into the helicopter and airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital for further treatment.
13.01.2022 CareFlight and the University of Tasmania yesterday signed an agreement in an important step to building resilience and healthcare capability for the people of Tasmania. Our CEO, Mick Frewen, and Head of the Tasmanian School of Medicine, Professor James Vickers, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to deliver medical trauma and pre-hospital training to the university’s clinical students, alongside emergency services and other service providers. CareFlight’s simulated, ...high-fidelity training in partnership with local emergency services aims to give future health providers an appreciation of the challenges of providing care to patients in the pre-hospital setting. It will also create a foundation of respect for and understanding of the capabilities and experience of emergency and community service personnel. The partnership is well placed to bolster pre-hospital emergency service capabilities in Tasmania and ultimately help to save lives. CareFlight’s mission is to save lives, speed recovery and serve the community by providing the highest standard of rapid response critical care, Mick said. Coupled with the University of Tasmania’s aim of advancing knowledge and learning that promotes the socio-economic welfare of the community, the pre-hospital trauma workshops are perfectly aligned to boost community resilience and create a safer and healthier society.
13.01.2022 We hope that your weekend is as extraordinary as this view from one of our jets in Darwin! Thank you to one of our amazing flight nurses, Courtney, for taking this stunning sunset snap! #CareFlightStaffSnaps
13.01.2022 Well done to our aeromedical crews in the Top End who responded to a motor vehicle accident in Kakadu National Park with the Top End Rescue Helicopter and a B200 King Air turbo-prop aircraft! This double aircraft effort flew two flight doctors and three flight nurses to the scene, allowing us to treat and airlift the four patients to Royal Darwin Hospital.
13.01.2022 Ain’t ‘snow’ problem too difficult for our Education and Training team to overcome! Our team was meant to be delivering lifesaving scenario training workshops to locals in Orange today, but recent snowfall put their plans on hold. Let’s hope the Education and Training team has a chance to chill out before their training begins again!
12.01.2022 2020 has been a difficult year for many Australians as we all face a multitude of challenges, making it even more important for us to ask our friends, family and colleagues, Are you OK? One of CareFlights aircrew officers, Eric (left), is keen to encourage people to have a conversation with each other and remove the stigma around mental health. There is this misconception that people working in aviation and healthcare are superhumans who are emotionally bulletproof, when ...actually, we are some of the more susceptible people to feeling helpless and disconnected. The community doesnt have that clarity on the pressures of the job and situations that we face, particularly when organisations like ours are helping the most vulnerable Australians, said Eric. It can be an awkward conversation to have, but it is better to have that chat than not have it at all. It just takes one person to speak up about how they are going and this is the most powerful thing you can do for a friend or colleague; you are letting them know that it is OK to experience the ups and downs in life. If you are in a work environment, its worth developing trusting relationships with colleagues to nurture the opportunities to have a check in. Speaking from personal experience, Eric said it took him some time to realise that he needed help. Eventually, it was a friend who encouraged him to seek help after a conversation. While it is important to be there for someone, we also have to ensure that we ask ourselves the question. The more open conversations we have, and the more stories are shared, we can break down the stigma together. This years R U OK Day is educating Australians on what else there is to say after R U OK? To learn more about having the conversation, visit: www.ruok.org.au
12.01.2022 Did you know that as well as being there for the community to rapidly respond to emergencies by helicopter, CareFlight transfers patients by plane and road vehicle? Thank you to one of our patient transport drivers, Michael, who took this snap of one of our Patient Transport Vehicles and fixed wing aircraft at our Bankstown hangar. Michael and the team are dedicated to helping those needing specialist care in regional areas and require transport to and from major hospitals.
12.01.2022 Our CareFlight registrars had a ssseriousssly good time at the Australian Reptile Park where their nerves werent rattled when they encountered Australias most dangerous snakes and spiders. It was a piece of snake for our registrars who are learning practical skills to treat venomous bites and save lives. If you are interested in being a registrar with CareFlight, we have an upcoming information night at our Westmead HQ on 15 July, 2020. Learn more: careflight.org/careers/medical/

12.01.2022 It was a very special moment for our crews in the Northern Territory when they were reunited with Baby William and his family last week. The team first met Will back in March when he was just five weeks old. He had a rare, unstable heart rhythm and his body was beginning to shut down. After several weeks in hospital and two transfers with us on our Top End Rescue Helicopter and Air Ambulance Jet, William is back on his feet! Williams heart condition is now being managed and hes a healthy and bubbly little boy! We were all so happy to see him doing so well.

11.01.2022 Our CareFlight hangar in the Top End recently hosted some a-paw-rable guests for the ulti-mutt training exercises! Furry members of the Australian Federal Police and their human companions conducted searches in the hangar, including in and around our aircraft, to familiarise themselves with a new range of smells. This exercise presented a great opportunity for the dogs to explore new environments and broaden their detection parameters. As a result, both handlers and dogs can gain experience in searching a wide variety of settings to enhance their skills as a canine team.
11.01.2022 CareFlight completed a mission today to help an 11-year-old boy who was seriously injured when jumping on a trampoline, falling unconscious. After providing serious treatment for the boy at the scene, working with ambulance teams, the crew were able to fly him to hospital in a serious but stable condition. All three members of the CareFlight medical team on the helicopter today are fathers of young kids. They said they felt particularly privileged to be able to help their young patient this Father's Day and to have a job that helps protect every family's greatest assets!
10.01.2022 Some of the kids around Newcastle might recognise this bearded face who is featuring in this instalment of our #CareFlightCharacters series. Meet Graeme, one of our Patient Transport Drivers in Newcastle, also known as Santa Claus! Graeme joined the team two years ago when CareFlight launched our Newcastle operations. In his role, Graeme drives patients living in remote areas in and around Newcastle to and from hospitals, giving locals access to higher levels of medical care.... Graeme says that the best part about his job is that he is directly interacting with patients: There is nothing more rewarding than transporting patients again on their return journey and seeing that they have recovered and revitalised again. Often, were dropping off a patient in hospital and on the next bed is someone you transported a few days ago and they remember your name. I love it when they say a quick Gday Graeme, how are you and the team that cared for me? Even though Im with these patients for only a few hours, Im lucky to befriend them and know that I played a role in their recovery. A Novocastrian through and through, Graeme is known for his magnificent beard; everyone at CareFlight is eager to see him don the red suit and become our resident Santa again!

08.01.2022 A 40-year-old man riding his motorcycle on a gravel road has crashed through fencing and landed in shrubbery by a river between St Albans and Wisemans Ferry. The man broke his leg and made a triple zero call. CareFlights Rapid Response Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance shortly before 12:00pm to the area and the aeromedical crew circled at a low altitude following the mans instructions to identify his location among the bushy terrain. CareFlights aircrew officer spotte...d the man waving through the trees and the helicopter landed on a nearby field. The CareFlight aeromedical team were first on scene and made their way to the scene of the incident where the patient was trapped on steep, unsteady rocks in the bushland. CareFlights specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic assessed the patients condition and provided pain relief as the aircrew officer scoped out the area to identify the best path to extricate the man. Later, NSW Ambulance paramedics and members from the Rural Fire Service and State Emergency Service arrived to help extricate the patient. Following a two-hour long extrication where CareFlights clinical team worked in tandem with the other emergency services personnel, the man was prepared for flight transfer to hospital. The man was airlifted in a stable condition under continuing observation from CareFlights clinical team to Westmead Hospital.
08.01.2022 I leapt into aeromedicine because I find the challenge of looking after critically ill or injured patients in a prehospital environment rewarding. I love the out-of-the-box thinking and unique challenges I face with each patient. There is no standard cookie cutter approach and I have to use my resourcefulness to provide the best level of care for my patient. Plus, of course, the office view from the helicopter window isn’t too shabby either! Dr Chris Cheeseman, Medical D...irector CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter. From a fledgling registrar in the United Kingdom to flying to the rescue on the side of the world, Dr Chris Cheeseman reflects on his colourful career and what he hopes to achieve with CareFlight. CareFlight was first tasked at 11:10am to Umina Beach where a 25-year-old driver had been struck by another vehicle while reversing her car. The woman sustained injuries and fractures to her chest, abdomen and leg. Twenty minutes after being tasked, the CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter landed in Ettalong Oval where N...SW Police escorted the clinical team to the scene of the incident. NSW Ambulance paramedics had provided initial treatment and CareFlight’s specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic performed a clinical assessment on her, including an ultrasound. The patient was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition under ongoing observation from CareFlight’s clinical team. While on the helipad of Royal North Shore Hospital, at 12:45pm the CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter was tasked to another incident, in Kurrajong Heights, where a 69-year-old man had been working on the roof of his residence. The man had fallen three metres and impaled his back on a reinforcing bar. At 1:15pm, the aeromedical crew landed in the grounds of the property where NSW Ambulance paramedics were stabilising the patient. CareFlight’s specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic examined the man and administered pain relief. He was airlifted to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition under the continuing care of CareFlight’s clinical team. Shortly after CareFlight’s aeromedical team returned to the hangar based in Westmead, the crew was tasked at 3:40pm again, this time to Galston where a 15-year-old boy riding a dirt bike had fallen from it. The boy sustained a head injury and fractures to the arm. The CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter landed in the grounds of the property 15 minutes later and assessed the patient’s condition. He was prepared for flight transfer to hospital. The boy was airlifted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a stable condition.
