25.01.2022 I really like the description of glimmers as something that brings you to a space where you feel safe, connected and in charge. We as therapists can often ask so much about triggers that perhaps we forget to look for glimmers. Have a good week everyone Dr Mel

24.01.2022 For all our ndis participants this info may help with food access and discounts. Thankyou to The Growing Space

22.01.2022 Hi everyone, I am fortunate to look after many neurodiverse people. Neurotypical people and neurodiverse people have a range of ways of communicating and I thought that this graphic series showed some of the ways that neurodiverse people interact that may cause them to be misunderstood. I do think that as a neurotypical person it is also my job to understand how others think, feel and express emotion and hopefully this series helps others like me to grow that knowledge. Dr Mel

21.01.2022 Just a quick Saturday funny! Have a good weekend Dr Mel

21.01.2022 Hi everyone Dr Mel here Next week is term 2 in South Australia and many of our kids are heading back to school. Who would have thought back in term 1 that we would now be,not only having our usual worries about our kids at school, but also holding their and our worry about a pandemic. ... Just that worry alone makes life stressful. No matter whether you are sending your child to school next week or if you are having them home for a while my advice is 1. Help kids stay positive about learning. It is now even more important that children feel good about learning and engaging in learning activities as their world has shrunk and other activities have stopped 2. If your child is back at school make sure to check in and see how they are managing the different felt that their school will have as compared to a few weeks ago 3. Minimise homework to help them adjust back to the learning schedule and using home free school as a down time 4. Give feedback to school if what is happening isnt working for your child. This is new territory for all of us and schools too are working their way through Best of luck to all of us Best wishes to our lovely families for week 1 term 2

19.01.2022 Hello all, Wonderful news that research is being supported here for those with Autism and difficulties with social cognition. Dr Natalie Mills works at our practice and we are very proud that she is a part of this wonderful research plan. From the University of Adelaide - Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences August 2020 update... Dr Scott Clark, Dr Nigel Rogasch, Professor Cherrie Galletly and Dr Natalie Mills have also achieved success in the MRFF neurological disorder grant round, through their involvement in a Deakin University-led $1.9 million multi-site national trial of transcranial magnetic stimulation for social cognition in autism. Well done to all involved.

19.01.2022 It’s World Mental Health Week and Thankyou to WA for their great page and resources. 15 to 20% of the population has a mental illness and we need to prioritise the care of our mental health to benefit the whole community. https://mentalhealthweek.org.au/

17.01.2022 Hi everyone. Dr Mel here Here in SA we are fortunate that mask wearing isnt a recommendation for the general population. However for our Victorian friends I thought this info below may be helpful. Please feel free to send to relatives who live where mask wearing is part of their public health approach. Helping kids feel informed and safe will really help them getting through the Covid19 experience.

14.01.2022 Hi Dr Mel here Im often asked about executive functioning and what it is. Essentially its the more advanced thinking skills we develop as we reach adulthood. Different disorders can cause impairments in executive functioning like autism, severe mental illness and learning disorders. Kids learn over their childhood menu new skills and our executive functioning relies on life experience, education, relationships and growth. Occupational therapy and psychology based therapy can both be very helpful in managing a range of executive functioning disorders. Thank you to connections in mind UK for this summary.

13.01.2022 TWO COURSES - one for participants, the other for support coordinators UPDATE!! July just sold out! You guys are blowing me away! Ive just put an extra date f...or August for each course and updated this post! https://www.thegrowingspace.com.au/events/ Hope to e-meet some more of you! I (Sam) personally lead both courses. 2 day PowerMeUp (for participants and can be claimed from most plans) August 11 and 12 9:30-2:30pm ACST online live via Zoom Topic 1: What does the law tell us about the NDIS? (or I am told so many different, conflicting things! Whats the truth and how can I make it work for me!?) Topic 2: What is Reasonable & Necessary and Can I Buy It? And the difference between the two! Topic 3: Plan Basics and Reviews making the most of reviews, figuring out and giving yourself the best chance at getting what you need in your plan Topic 4: Managing Providers how to find and manage the supports and services you want and need to meet your goals Topic 5: Innovation Wild ways to uncover your goals and use your funding for awesome outcomes Topic 6: Self Management making it work for you tips and tricks for those considering or have already chosen Self Management Q and As there will be time throughout the two days to ask those burning questions, so start writing them down! More info and bookings here: https://www.thegrowingspace.com.au//ndis-power-me-up-aug-/ Feedback from the June Power me Up course - Im in shock. Had my sons review meeting four days after your course - his funding is now tripled!!!! I feel like finally I know what I need to do to get my son what he needs! thank you - I feel so empowered now. I cant believe all the ideas I learned. Im been his Mum for 27 years and thought I understood, but I just learnt so much. - Im telling everyone I know who has a NDIS plan to do this. Everyone. - I loved the videos too and being able to share some stories without it becoming overwhelmed. You kept the room in good order. Thanks. - I cant wait to start doing some of this. - Im going to look at using my SDA funds to buy my own home now - Thank you! - That law section was just amazing - now I know where I stand and wont let the LAC or planner trample of my rights again! - Alot to take in - might need to do it again. Great presentation style and information - not even a second of boring. 3 day Support Coordination Course (for SCs working in the field, and those with lived experience of NDIS looking to break into the field) August 24-26 9:30-4:30pm ACST More info and bookings here: https://www.thegrowingspace.com.au//ndis-support-co-ordin/ Feedback from the June SC Course: - I loved the course and cant stop thinking about it. - 3 days of big picture thinking is intense to digest. - The pragmatic approach Sam took to go through the end to end process re Support Coordination it gave a brilliant first hand account on what/how and why we could do things, which was great for me! - I loved the documents provided, and a thorough understanding of what good Support Coordination looks like. - The whole lot was great! The Framework, Governance and Legislation - section was really interesting and helped put everything into context. The detailed look at what the job actually entails (and what it doesnt) and the suggestions for the first meeting and beyond and all the resources that went with it was invaluable. - Lots of discussion and practical examples - The pre reading was very interesting and definitely helped me get more out of the training. - It was a huge amount of information to take in but having the slides available beforehand so I could print them off and take notes really helped. Places for both courses are not held until payment is received. If you are a participant, you can *almost* certainly claim the cost of the PowerMeUp course from Core or Capacity Building. Invoices are provided for plan management or self management claims. Check with your Plan Manager first if you have a Plan Manager who oversteps their boundaries and thinks they make spending decisions for you.

13.01.2022 I think that after a busy day we all are likely to need some internal quiet. Its been a hectic year for many and its worth, if you can, slowing down to take time to feel ok after a stressful day. Thankyou to @Childrens Behaviour Support, Wiltshire For the graphic below

09.01.2022 It is very hard at the moment with the world in a strange place to feel OK. We are all working through different stages of anxiety and grief as the world changes and we lose predictability in our lives. I think that it is important that we all know that we cant be perfect parents, or perfect kids - and that that is OK. We can only do our best each day and some days we are better at life than other days! Hang in there, talk to friends, do something that you enjoy, hold onto positive memories. We are thinking of all of our patients and their families and we are still here to help you through. Thankyou Crunchy Mama for this lovely thought below. Dr Mel

06.01.2022 Hi all This Thursday is RUOK day. Sometimes we get stuck on what to say next. This Thursday RUOK are offering a webinar to help us support others and know what to do with that conversation. It is true that we never really know someone elses journey. Our lives are often busy, complicated spaces where we can feel powerless; caring for one another and checking in on each other teaches us that we have worth. Dont forget to ask r u ok if you are wondering if someone isnt... their usual self - - listen - acknowledge their feelings - open up conversation - support them to get professional support if needed. And in these weird Covid times - look after yourself too Best wishes from our psychiatry and psychology group. Dr Mel

04.01.2022 Hi all I really like this brain model and in session I often talk about kids only being able to listen and learn when they are safe. So if you are in panic a lot of the time then the chance to take in information and learn is minimal. That also means that trying to talk through a crisis with someone in panic is gevrtally not helpful. So when someone is highly distressed we can - be with them, some people need you very close : others need some space - provide verbal reassura...nce in a calm quiet voice - validate their feelings and distress so they know they are heard - be patient and wait - you are showing that you can share their feelings without being overwhelmed. Dr Mel
