25.01.2022 Let's be realistic; race cars in sheds will just stay in sheds and be of no use without places to race them. But there's high anticipation amongst Newcastle pe...trol heads at the promise of a $12 million motor racing circuit to be built on the former Ringwood Park site outside Raymond Terrace, which will be an international-standard track capable of attracting top-level events. The Balickera site, off Italia Road, has been used for off-road racing for decades but had become overgrown and largely inaccessible. Mr Higgins said the raceway would make good use of land that was degraded and already exposed to noise from the Pacific Highway on one side, a blasting quarry on the other and the Williamtown flight path overhead. Matthew Higgins, a Hunter businessman and motorsport enthusiast, said his planned 2.9-kilometre, 12-metre wide Circuit Italia motorsport facility would capitalise on the natural topography of the site to create some fantastic uphill sections and heart-stopping downhill high-speed corners. The track location was previously owned by the Newcatle MG car club - and when a member of that club (and unemployed), I spent countless days on a tractor & grader restoring those severely eroded old rallysprint tracks & putting in new ones. But just as I got the layout approved for rallysprints and ran a state round there, the club sold the site. However as a result I know better than most exactly the terrain this Circuit Italia will traverse. Simply put - it's gonna be like a rollercoaster, with way more ups & downs than Oran Park had (my favorite track because of it's elevation changes). Think Brands Hatch mixed with Catalina & you've got it. This new track was originally planned to be over 3km, with the main straight running down where the access road to Barley Ranch Motocross is, with a new road for them being put in alongside the highway. But the updated drawings show that road remaining and the main straight parallel to it... hence the now slightly shorter length. The track was approved by Port Stephens Council in 2013 and Mr Higgins is currently in negotiations with potential builders, having had a construction certificate for the project granted in March 2017. With an estimated construction period of 26 to 40 weeks, the track has had a number of forecast finish dates come & go. MGCCN booked a supersprint for November last year... but the only work done ( over a year ago), has been the clearing of the bush along the track's path. The delays must be driving Matthew crazy and they are a sensitive issue I don't want to aggravate, but I can guarantee you he's working flat out to get this circuit built - and it WILL happen. A previous proposal by Motorplex Australia for a racing facility on the site was rejected in 2003. Unlike that project, the Circuit Italia facility will not cater for drag racing or speedway. Its focus will be circuit racing but it will also be available for driver training, club events, promotional events such as demo days and private use by accredited drivers. The ultimate goal is to be able to hold international events here, Mr Higgins said. He said the track would be built to the standards of the FIA, the sport’s international governing body, which would make it technically capable of hosting events such as V8 Supercars or Formula E electric-powered race cars. Circuit Italia would be applying for a Category A licensing. A second phase, involving a separate development application, would include administration and spectator facilities and hospitality rooms. We could run a big event with temporary infrastructure, which is what they do on street circuits, but the plan is to have it built permanently on site, Mr Higgins said. A commissioned economic impact statement has indicated the track would return a multi-million dollar benefit to the community, which would increase significantly if it attracted big national or international events. While Circuit Italia is primarily a business proposition, Mr Higgins, a keen car buff, admitted he also had a strong personal motivation for building the track. ‘I have some nice cars I would like to be able to drive to their potential, and if we could get pictures inside HIS "shed" you'd certainly agree.

21.01.2022 Our final film of 2017 was one of our favorites, the mighty Singer Vehicle Design.

20.01.2022 "Late one Friday in 1969 the telephone rang. Hello Frank, this is Husche (von Hanstein). We would like you to drive our new car at the Nurburgring 1,000 kilomet...res this weekend. I said I was busy and recommended he call Brian Redman. 'Brian has had a crash, and is in hospital.' Jo Siffert was my next suggestion. 'Jo has had a crash and is in hospital.' 'What the bloody hell is going on there?' Our new car is not easy to drive, Frank' - and he wasn't kidding! "Porsche came to us because there was a shortage of drivers but the money was good so David Piper and I decided to take it on. "These first cars had alloy tubular chassis, which was gas-filled to detect cracks. There was a big guage in the cockpit, which measured the gas pressure. If the guage zeroed, they said it meant that the chassis has started to crack, and they said I should drive home 'mit care'. I told them, 'If the needle zeroes I'll park the ******* there and then and walk back, pick up my Deutschmarks and go home'. "The chassis flexed so much that the position of the gearchange was never the same twice in a row. You'd reach out for the lever and it wasn't there anymore. I was asked to drive it at Le Mans, the money was great too, but I told them 'I never wanted to be the quickest bloke in motor racing - just the oldest- and that Porsche was going to interfere with my plans. "Then there was the engine. You had about 300 horsepower at 5000 revs, and then between 5000 and 6000 you picked up another 300! So it was a bit of delight, really, and it was on narrow nine-inch rims all round. The computer had said that nine-inch rims would make the car very quick in a straight line, but the computer wasn't strapped in the bloody seat up in the Eifel mountains, where you tend to get the odd corner... "David did one lap at the Nurburgring and said he was too young to die. It snowed and poured, the car was snapping sideways and aquaplaning at the same time. It was one of the few times I extended my concentration levels above and beyond what I possessed, but we finished 5th". - Frank Gardner, on the Porsche 917

15.01.2022 In 1958, the King of Rock and Roll bought this 1957 BMW 507 while he stationed in Germany with the US Army. At the time of the purchase, Presley's car was white... in colour however, he soon ordered it to be resprayed in red. There are several legends behind this colour choice. One of them says that Elvis picked red in order to stop female fans leaving lipstick marks on the paintwork whereas, the other legend suggests that Presley wanted the car to remind him of the kissing lips of his female fans.
