13.01.2022 Meet our Volunteer Student of the Month: Kara Batchelor. Short description of who you are and what your position is within MCL: I am a third year law and criminology student at Griffith University. I have volunteered at My Community Legal (MCL) since April last year and currently hold the position of a senior volunteer and team leader. During the week, my role entails helping the new student volunteers in the office with understanding/completing the intake and advice process...es we have had to implement due to COVID 19. On Thursday afternoons, I am also in the office trying to prepare for the advice night ahead which is always a little hectic with numerous cancellations and appointment time changes. Reflecting on my time so far at MCL, one of the most rewarding experiences has been assisting clients as their first point of call in the office. Qualifications/ What are you studying? I am currently in my third year of studying a Bachelor of Laws (Hons)/Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice. In addition to my position at MCL, I also intern at a Criminal Law firm in Bundall. Favourite quote? I know it is a little cliché, but I have the quote by Winston Churchill ‘never, never, never, give up’ hanging above my desk which I think has got to be the biggest thing when trying to get through law school! What inspired you to volunteer with MCL? I have always been passionate about helping out the community and giving my time to those in need, and when I started studying law it became apparent to me of my ability to use my privilege of studying law to help those in need. MCL is an incredible organisation that provides this help to those within our own community, and being so close to home, I was inspired and willing to give up my time to help. What do you feel/think is the best part of volunteering with MCL? During my time at MCL, I have learnt a lot about the law and the way it operates and affects people’s lives, day-in and day-out. However, the most noteworthy part of volunteering at MCL has been the invaluable friendships and connections I have been able to make. I love working with each and every one of our team members, which makes coming into the legal centre my favourite part of my week! If you have the opportunity to volunteer at MCL, or anywhere in fact, do it you won’t regret it!

08.01.2022 Meet our Volunteer Practitioner of the Month: Sarah Galvin from Robbins Watson. Short description of who you are and what your position is within MCL: I am a family lawyer with Robbins Watson Solicitors and I’m an Associate of the firm. I have been a lawyer for over 15 years but involved in the legal profession for much longer. I have practiced in criminal prosecution and child protection in the UK as well as family law, though currently I practice exclusively in family law.... I am a volunteer adviser for MCL. Qualifications? I have a Bachelor of Laws and completed the Bar Practice Course. Favourite quote? A piece of poetry actually rather than a quote - Two roads diverged in a wood, and II took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference: Robert Frost. It’s an oldie, but I’m old and it’s a goodie. What inspired you to volunteer with MCL? MCL is an organisation which is providing a valuable and much needed service to the community. There is a real and urgent need for legal services to be accessible and many people who cannot afford to access it. What do you feel/think is the best part of volunteering with MCL? There is a great collegiate feel amongst practitioners, staff and students, a willingness to use our combined efforts to make a difference in the community. It’s great to be able to make a difference to people’s lives, even if a small one, and for the law students to be able to gain real world experience. See more
