19.01.2022 Received some great resources from @visionaustralia today, some visual loss simulators to show the effects of some of the most common causes of vision loss that affects many Australians. The first simulates advanced diabetic retinopathy, one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in Australia, poor glycaemic control and dietary choices, along with a lack of medication often leads to preventable changes in vision. The second is Macula Degeneration, a common condition ...seen in the elderly which can be picked up and its progression slowed if caught in the early stages with supplementation and dietary changes, a complete loss of central vision can occur which leads to huge impacts on QoL. The third is Glaucoma, the silent theft of sight. Usually uncontrolled intra-ocular pressures will only present themselves symptomatically very late in the disease course, so regular checks for those with a positive family history is crucial to stop the vision becoming this poor, creating a tunnel vision like effect. Medications and surgery can be indicated, with several types of stents available with surgery with the final condition... Cataracts is last, usually age related but can present at an early onset with prolonged UV exposure, or even at birth with congenital problems, usually surgery involves removal of the foggy natural lens and replacement with a new custom phakic IOL, often restoring vision back to what it was many years prior! Many combination surgeries are also performed to assist in glaucoma management also with early cataracts, and we work closely with @qldeyeinstitute for prompt referral and treatment options. Now instead of looking at Rory's enormous ears we have these two as fixation targets We are open for regular eye exams again! All of the advised Covid-19 cleaning guides and training modules have been undertaken by our staff, and longer appointment times to ensure both yours and our safety! We have also updated our other cleaning protocols with a UV sanitiser for frames and lenses, regular cleaning of stock with ViraClean (no damage to acetate in frames when compared to alcohol based cleaners), along with screening checks on entry and masks provided to patients at their request.
