Australia has committed $123m to the COVAX Facility that will help developing countries gain equitable access to a successful COVID vaccine! This global initiative gives both Australia and our neighbours our best chance to #EndCOVIDForAll! Through the Facility, rich and poor countries pool their purchasing power to drive vaccine R&D and manufacturing. The aim is to have 2 billion doses available by the end of 2021 to end the acute phase of this pandemic. This should be enough to protect high-risk and vulnerable people, as well as frontline healthcare workers. It also gives Australia access to a pool of over 170 vaccine candidates and coverage for 50 per cent of our population, if the Oxford and University of Queensland vaccines don’t work out. We know this crisis won’t end for anyone, until it ends for everyone. That’s why this investment is both generous and a smart one too!
