25.01.2022 Do you suffer from Headaches and Migraines Do you wake up with neck stiffness in the mornings Do you feel that your neck stiffness brings on your Headaches and Migraines Do you always feel like you have had poor quality sleep due to neck stiffness and Headaches... If you have answered yes to any of the above questions then it is likely that your neck stiffness is the cause of your Headaches and Migraines! When the first 3 neck joints are not moving properly, it places more pressure on one side of the disc between the neck joints, which further affects the way the neck joints move. When the neck joints are not moving properly, they also affect the way the neck muscles work, the uneven pull on the neck muscles often results in muscle spasms from the shoulders to the base of the head, further aggravating your neck stiffness! This cycle of neck joint dysfunction, increased disc pressure, muscle spasms often becomes worse over time. When the first 3 neck joints are not moving properly, it also causes an increase in brainstem sensitivity which causes your brain to interpret sensations of stiffness and pain as Headaches and Migraines! That is why you find that your neck stiffness triggers your Headaches and Migraines! Luckily its not all gloom and doom, because heres the GOOD NEWS! Stiff neck joints and muscles spasms can be treated and fixed with the appropriate examination and treatment. Whether it is a chronic issue or acute onset Headaches and Migraines, the neck joint stiffness can be fixed! Effective and long term relief of your neck pain and headaches can be achieved through a specially tailored Headache and Migraine Relief Program for you! 24.01.2022 Did your child fall onto their shoulder and broke their collarbone Perhaps your child was involved in a tackle at sports that resulted in a collar bone The collarbone is located between the chest bone and the shoulder blade. It is the bone that connects the arm to the body. The collar bone lies above several important nerves and blood vessels. However, these vital structures are rarely injured when a collarbone breaks. Collarbone fractures or breaks are fairly common and... occur in people of all ages. Most fractures occur in the middle portion of the bone. Occasionally, the bone will break where it attaches at the ribcage or shoulder blade. A collarbone fracture can be very painful and may make it hard to move your arm. Other signs and symptoms of a fracture may include: Sagging of the shoulder downward and forward Inability to lift the arm because of pain A grinding sensation when you try to raise the arm A deformity or "bump" over the break Bruising, swelling, and/or tenderness over the collarbone Most collarbone fractures can be treated by wearing a sling to keep the arm and shoulder from moving while the bone heals. With some collarbone fractures, however, the pieces of bone move far out of place when the injury occurs. For these more complicated fractures, surgery may be needed to realign the collarbone. Bone healing takes 6 to 8 weeks in adults and 4 to 6 weeks in children. Having your arm in a sling for 4 to 8 weeks can result in a stiff shoulder and loss in shoulder movements. The most common mistake that we see as Expert Physiotherapists, is that most people do not realise that Physiotherapy is key to their rehabilitation post- fracture to help promote bone healing and prevent shoulder stiffness and loss of shoulder movement. A poorly managed broken collarbone can not only result in a deformed collarbone, it can result in loss in shoulder movement and function of the arm. Don't let that happen to you or your child! If you or your child has broken a collarbone, ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 to speak to one of our Expert Physiotherapists to find out how we can hep you.

23.01.2022 Are you walking the talk or just talking the walk Dont be that person who is all talk, and no action. Its easy to speak about what youre going to do, but the reality is that actually achieving your desires often requires less talking and more doing. And because doing is much harder than talking, it takes discipline. Discipline is neither glamorous nor exciting: its the dogged determination to turn up and keep going, regardless of whether you feel like it or ...not. The most common reason why many people fail to be consistent at doing what they need to do is because they give in to how they are feeling at that moment. Instead of getting out of bed in the morning immediately when the alarm rings to go to the gym, they lie in bed and debate within their own head about how tired they are feeling at the moment and how they dont feel too well. After 5 minutes of justifying why they could not do what they need to do because of how they are feeling at the moment, they successfully convince themselves that they can take the day off from their exercise routine. If that sounds familiar to you, heres a replacement action you can take whenever, you find yourself in that moment of self talk about how you are feeling - remind yourself how good you are going to feel when you finish the session at the gym like you planned to the day before. Remind yourself of the sense of achievement and the satisfaction you will feel because you needed to gather every bit of strength and discipline within yourself to get up and do it! Then just Do It! At the end of the day, its discipline that will get you over the finish line If you find yourself struggling to get back to active living to achieve your health goals due to pain, reach out to My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 or PM us on Facebook to speak to one of our Expert Physiotherapists today! #justdoit #myfavouritephysio #selfdiscipline #winning #physio #physiotherapy #bankstown #paedsphysio #kidsphysio

22.01.2022 Are you experiencing Groin Pain whenever you sit or stand for any period of time Have you seen Doctors and Specialists and have abdominal and pelvic scans that show nothing is causing your Groin Pain and yet you can't walk up or down stairs without feeling a pain in your groin Did you know that your Groin Pain could be referred pain coming from Your Hip Joint Usually problems within the Hip joint will refer pain to the groin while muscle tightness, ligament strai...n and tendon inflammation around the Hip Joint will refer pain on the outside of your Hip, into the upper thigh or outer buttock muscles. If you are experiencing Groin Pain, you might find that your Groin pain is a combination of pain around your buttock, thigh and groin area. There are many causes for Hip Pain including: Arthritis of the hip, where Osteoarthritis is most common, especially in people older than 50 Lower Back Pain Fracture of the top of the Femur (thigh bone) Strained muscle around the hip, buttocks and lower back Inflammed tendon ( tendinitis) or Bursa ( Bursitis) Infection and Pinched nerves (Sciatica) Each of these conditions require a different treatment strategy to overcome the Groin Pain. The Key to successfully overcoming your Groin Pain requires a careful and through assessment of the lower back, hip and groin area to determine the correct cause of your Groin Pain. Here at My Favourite Physio, we often hear patients tell us that the they have had many investigations and tried various therapies but have not ever had anyone assess their hip or lower back to locate and reproduce their Groin pain! So if you have been struggling and putting up with Groin Pain by reducing your activity levels and avoiding sitting or standing for longer than 30 minutes, what you need to do is to ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 to speak to one of our Expert Physiotherapists to find out how we can help you overcome your Groin Pain today! #groinpain #hippain #myfavouritephysio #hipainrelief #arthritis #physio #physiotherapy #beabetteryou #bankstown

22.01.2022 Does Low Back Pain stop you from moving at your lower back Or does the Fear of Low Back Pain stop you from moving at your lower back A recent study looked at the relationship between fear of low back pain and ability to move at the lower back. The study 45 people with chronic low back pain and 25 healthy people with no previous history of low back pain. Using questionnaires, participants with chronic low back pain were divided into two groups: ‘high fear of low back pain...’ and ‘low fear of low back pain’. Interestingly, there was no significant difference in the type of lower back injury between the two groups of ‘high fear’ and ‘low fear’ participants. This indicated that the amount of fear someone has or doesn’t have is not related to the severity of the lower back injury. Participants were then asked to, at the sound of a beep, bend forward and then return to their upright posture. The results showed that Fearful participants took longer to move at their lower backs because they tended to initially hesitate to move AND also ‘freeze’ before changing the direction of the movement at their lower back. The more fear they had, the longer it took to move at their lower back and the more pain they reported when they moved. The take home message from this study is - 1. Fear of pain can limit your ability to move at your lower back more than the actual amount of physical injury in the lower back. 2. Fear of movement can limit your ability to move at your lower back. This leads to increased stiffness in the lower back, which makes it harder and more painful to move over time. Reinforcing your fear of moving at your lower back. Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Physiotherapists understand that your past experiences and fears do impact on your ability to move at your lower back. That is why education is a big part of our 3 Step Back Pain Solution Session. If you have been struggling with chronic low back pain and have been avoiding movement due to a fear of pain, ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 to speak to one of our Expert Physiotherapists today. 22.01.2022 Have you had a Wellness Health Check with your Family Doctor recently Have you been putting up with aches and pains because you think that it’s part of aging It’s amazing how often people put up with little niggles and think it’s just a sign of old age and there’s nothing wrong because we don’t feel unwell.... Did you know that there are many conditions that are known as silent killers because they often creep up and worsen without showing visible signs, striking and killing before the affected person even knows that they’re sick. Sometimes the symptoms of a silent killer are misunderstood or attributed to other causes such as aging. Examples of silent killers include Heart Diease, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Cancer, Hepatitis, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Fatty Liver Disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Deep Vein Thrombosis! This is why regular Wellness Health Checks are important especially as we get older. The aim of a health check is to help find, prevent or lessen the effect of health issues. It’s like getting your car serviced before it breaks down. It’s better to avoid disease than to treat it. Although some checks can be uncomfortable, they provide your GP or specialist with an opportunity to look at your lifestyle, medical history and family history to find out if you’re at risk. Having a regular doctor or practice has several advantages. Most importantly, you will build a relationship over time and are more likely to feel comfortable talking openly. Also, your doctor will get to know you and understand your health needs and concerns. By having a regular doctor or practice, your medical history stays in the one place, and is more likely to be kept up to date. So when did you last have a Wellness Health Check with your Family Doctor? If you haven’t had a Wellness Health Check for while, ring your Family Doctor to make an appointment for one today! Like and share this post with your family and friends, let’s help our loved ones make time to look after their Health! #beabetteryou #myfavouritephysio #healthcheck #physio #physiotherapy #hearthealth #bankstown #diabetes

22.01.2022 Feeling tired this morning and wishing you didnt have to get out of bed to go to the gym Maybe its cold outside and its warmer in bed and the thought of having to train in the cold is enough to send shivers down your spine Lying in bed for that 5 minutes after the alarm goes can mean that you start to talk yourself out of going to attend training and justifying why its ok not to attend today. Before you know it, youve made up your mind to call in sick because you ...dont feel too well.... that slight sniffle might be the start of a cold so best to stay and rest up, you convince yourself. However, great achievements didnt come to those who dont consistently persistently turned up for training rain, hail or shine. Staying in bed and not turning up was never an option for champions. What champions do is when the alarm goes, they jump out of bed and get on with getting ready for their day. They start their day ready to win! Heres 3 Top Tips to help you become a champion and own your day 1. Plan for your day in advance. The day before prepare yourself by going to bed earlier if you have to wake up early in the morning. Say no to late night social events if it means you will wake up feeling hung over. 2. Go to bed excited about the event. Tell yourself that its going to be a great training session and mentally visualise yourself crushing it at training. This will train your mindset to win and rule out the self doubt talk in the morning. 3. Dont hit the snooze button on your alarm. When the alarm goes off in the morning, get out of bed immediately and avoid allowing yourself to lie in bed for 5 more minutes. This is the moment when the self doubt and negative talk starts to invade your mind. Eliminate that opportunity by jumping straight into a hot shower to get ready for your day. Practice these 3 Top Tips everyday consistently and you will start owning and winning your day like champion!! Like and share with someone you know who can up their game by another level! Comment below to share your win for the day so we can celebrate with you!

21.01.2022 Have you noticed that your child is not yet pulling to stand while everyone in his playgroup is Is you child refusing to put weight on their feet when you support them to try to stand Is your 18 month old child still preferring to crawl or bottom shuffle instead of walking Did you know that baby should be walking independently by 18 months old otherwise they would be considered to be delayed in their gross motor skills development There are many reasons why a ch...ild may not be attempting to pull to stand or put weight on their feet such as Developmental Hip Dysplasia, Low muscle tone, Developmental Delay or Cerebral Palsy. So its really important to have your child properly assessed by an Expert Paediatric Physiotherapist to ensure that the correct cause for your child not wanting to walk is determined. One of the causes for that needs to be ruled out urgently is Developmental Hip Dysplasia. Developmental Hip Dyplasia refers to the immature development of the hip joint and can vary from having a shallow hip socket to a completely dislocated hip joint. All babies in Australia should have been checked for Developmental Hip Displays at birth, however, there are often times when for various reasons babies are misdiagnosed or are not checked properly until it is noticed that the child is not moving one leg as actively at 10 months or when an uneven skin fold is noticed in the back of their leg at 6 months old. So if you are concerned that your child is not wanting to weight bear on their feet or is not yet walking, it is important to check their hip joints. To do a hip check, request your family doctor for a hip ultrasound if your child is under 6 months old or a hip Xray if your child is over 6 months old. The treatment for Developmental Hip Dysplasia will depend on the age of your child and the condition of the hip joint. For more information about Developmental Hip Dysplasia or if you are concerned about your childs gross motor skills development, ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 to speak to one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists today!

20.01.2022 Is your tween 12 and going on 30 Finding yourself at constant strive with your child Have you tried Tough Love Parenting Tough love parenting involves setting clear boundaries and limits to help a child become more responsible for his behavior rather than rescuing him, offering extra chances, or preventing kids from consequences of their actions. Tough love parenting is about helping kids experience consequences for their behaviours to teach them life lessons. ...Tough Love Parenting is often used for troubled teens with substance abuse but is is proven to be most beneficial when used for children under 5 years old. Tough love is NOT Authoritarian parenting. Authoritarian parents use a "my way or the highway approach" because they're more concerned with getting kids to comply, rather than teaching life lessons. Tough love parenting differs in that it can still be warm and empathetic. A study found that children with "tough love" parents were twice as likely to show good character capabilities by age 5. The study found that warmth and consistent discipline were key to helping kids build character like self regulation and empathy. Additionally, the study found that regardless of whether children were rich or poor or had married or divorced parents, parenting style was the biggest predictor of character development. Here are some specific principles of tough love parenting: Parents need to be the authority figures in their home. Parents have a huge influence on their kids and need to set an example they can learn from. Parents need to send consistent and clear messages to their children. Parents can't directly change their kids but can change their behavior to bring about changes in their kids. Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists practices Tough Love when setting boundaries in therapy which has allowed many of our little ones with behavioural tantrums learn new skills and achieve their best potential. To find out if we can help your little one with delayed gross motor skills, ring My Favourite Physio (02) 9790 4233 today!

19.01.2022 Experiencing knee pain when you run Avoiding stairs because of knee pain Knees feel weak and heavy to lift when walking uphill If you answered yes to any of the 3 statements above, then you are not alone! About 19% of the population experiences knee pain that affects their daily activities of living. Knee pain is more common in women than men, with the incidence and severity knee pain increasing with age.... The most common causes of knee pain are: 1. Ligament strains and sprains - this is the often related to twisting injury at sports or tripping over and falling awkwardly on the side of your knee. 2. Osteoarthritis - this is a wear and tear of the knee joints more common in the older adults. 3.Overuse syndromes tendinitis, bursitis, which refer to inflammation of the tendon and bursa (fluid filled bags that reduce friction) respecively. Wear and tear can damage these structures and cause inflammation. 4. Fractures around the knee - this is often related to trauma where the knee cap and knee bone break due to a hit impact fall. 5. Referred pain from the hip, thigh bone, or lower back - pain from the hip joint or lower back often changes the way you walk which places more stress on the knee joint leading to knee pain. Given the many reasons and causes for knee pain, it is vital to have the correct diagnosis for your knee pain, so that you are receiving the correct treatment for your knee pain. Here at My Favourite Physio, we often meet people who have put up with knee pain for many months and years because their knee pain was not correctly diagnosed or that they were not receiving the correct treatment for their knee pain. 19.01.2022 Have you been told to stretch your bottom muscles to help relief your hip pain Been doing regular stretching but not getting any relief for your hip pain People are often taught that stretching is a great way of releasing muscle tightness and maintaining good muscle flexibility. Stretching is suggested by many health professionals and sports trainers. However, it is important to understand that for some conditions and injuries stretching too early can actually do more ...harm than good! Gluteal tendinopathy (Tendinitis of the buttock muscle) is considered one of the common causes of lateral hip pain. Symptoms of Gluteal tendinopathy includes buttock pain that goes around the side of the hip and down the side of the thigh to the knee, pins and needles or numbness down the leg.Gluteal tendinopathy occurs when the tendon is compressed which occurs when sitting crossed legged or when stretching the hip joint so the the knee is pulled across the midline if the body. Compression of the gluteal tendon is the key cause of lateral hip pain and should be avoided! However, most therapists tend to prescribe stretches such as the piriformis stretch, ITB stretch and the Pigeon pose to treat lateral hip pain and gluteal tendinopathy in the early phase of Gluteal tendinopathy! All of which may create painful, compressive load on the gluteal tendon. These stretches can actually aggravate the tendon in the hip joint and cause more lateral hip pain in the early phase. The key to successful treatment and rehabilitation of lateral hip pain in the early phase of treatment is to actually allow the tendons time to heal and to manage the inflammation and swelling in the tendon before stretching to avoid further aggravation of the tendon injury! So, if you have lateral hip pain and have been stretching without experiencing any improvements in your hip pain ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 or PM Myfavouritephysio on Facebook or Instagram to speak to one of our Expert Physiotherapists today! #hippain #kneepain #myfavouritephysio #beabetteryou #physio #physiotherapy #bankstown #backpain #hipstretches #hippainrelief

19.01.2022 Do you experience headaches and neck stiffness after lifting weights in your gym workouts Does performing overhead shoulder exercises or shoulder pulls in the gym cause an onset of Headaches and neck pain the next day If you answered YES to either questions above, then you may have poor control and strength in your shoulder blade muscles which leads to overcompensation of the neck muscles and joints that results in Headaches and Neck Pain ... Poor shoulder blade muscle strength and control means that any sort of overhead or pulling exercise tends to trigger the neck muscles to work to compensate for the lack of strength and control in the shoulder muscles to achieve the desired range of overhead or pulling movement for the exercise. This results in a build up of muscle tightness and joint stiffness in the neck that eventually leads to triggering Headache episodes. Therefore to effectively eliminate post gym workout Headaches, both the neck and shoulder blade dysfunction have to be addressed for prevention and treatment of Headaches! At My Favourite Physio that’s exactly what our Expert Physiotherapists do when they see someone who experiences Headaches and Neck Pain! 18.01.2022 Does Your Child with Cerebral Palsy have regular Hip Surveillance Checks When was the last time Your Childs Hips were checked to make sure that their Hip Joints are healthy The Hip Joint is made up of the head of the thigh bone (femur) and the socket of the pelvic bone (acetabulum), together they make up a ball and socket joint at the hip which allows our hips to move is 360 degrees. Hip surveillance is defined as: The process of monitoring and identifying the critica...l early indicators of hip displacement." Hip displacement refers to the displacement of the head of the thigh bone laterally out of the socket of the pelvic bone and is measured using a migration percentage (MP). Hip subluxation refers to hip displacement where the head of the thigh bone is partially displaced from under the socket of the pelvic bone while hip dislocation refers to hip displacement where the head of the thigh bone is completely displaced from under the socket of the pelvic bone. So Why is Hip Surveillance Important 1. Hip displacement and dislocation can lead to pain, reduced function and reduced quality of life. 2. Children with cerebral palsy (CP) have an increased likelihood of hip displacement. 3. Hip surveillance allows for early detection of hip displacement. 4. Early detection enables referral for assessment and/or management. 5. Hip surveillance for children with CP should be completed using a systematic approach to ensure that no child with Cerebral Palsy is missed as they grow. The frequency of Hip Surveillance is dependent on a childs age, their gross motor function and the way they are walking.Ideally, Hip Surveillance should start by 2 years of age, when a Cerebral Palsy diagnosis is provided, or when Cerebral Palsy is suspected. Hip Surveillance frequency increases for children with Cerebral Palsy who use wheelchairs as their main form of mobility or when Migration Percentage is increasing. To find out more about Hip Surveillance for your Child with Cerebral Palsy, ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 to speak to one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists today.

18.01.2022 Do you find yourself having Headaches and Migraines when you dont drink enough fluids ? A Dehydration Headache is a secondary headache, caused by not having enough fluids in the body.Dehydration Headaches can be relatively mild or severe like a Migraine. Our body needs a good amount and balance of fluids function properly . With exercising and daily activities our body loses fluids through sweating and passing urine. Most of the time the amount of fluid lost... can easily be overcome by drinking and eating. However, with poor habits such as not drinking water regularly and not eating three meals regularly in a day, our body loses fluids faster than is being replenished. During these times, the body can become dehydrated, which can lead to complications including Dehydration Headaches . Since Dehydration Headaches occur only when the body is dehydrated, symptoms of dehydration such as extreme thirst, fatigue, reduced urination and dark coloured urine can be present during the Headache. Thankfully dehydration headaches can be overcomed quite simply by having enough fluids and not skipping meals! So, drink plenty of water and enjoy three meals regularly in the day to avoid Dehydration Haedaches! If you have read this information and find that your headaches are not dehydration related and want to find out more about why your headaches and migraines are happening ring My Favourite Physio now on (02) 9790 4233 and speak to one of our expert physiotherapists today! #physiotherapy #bankstown #physio #headaches #migraines #headacheandmigraine #beabetteryou #dehydration

16.01.2022 Like the sensation of the wind blowing through your hair when you are riding a bike Hate wearing a helmet while riding a bike because you don’t want to have Helmet Hair Did you know that Helmet use reduces the risk of head injuries by 51%, the risk for serious head injuries by 69%, the risk for face injury by 33% and and the risk for fatal head injury by 65%. ... Injuries to the neck, face, head, and brain are unfortunately rather common in bicycle accidents. Many accident-related brain injuries don’t happen in high-velocity impacts. Instead, it is the low-speed accidents that generate the most concussions. Concussions happen when any type of blow to the head causes the brain to rotate inside the skull or to form blood clots. A mild concussion might not cause significant symptoms, but a severe one could lead to dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, behavior changes, sleep problems, confusion, and memory loss. Blows or jolts to the head are the most common causes of brain injuries in bicycle accidents. If the head strikes the road, the vehicle, and/or another object in the collision, it could cause a head injury such as a skull fracture, as well as brain damage. The most serious brain injuries can make a permanent difference in how the victim thinks, acts, moves, and speaks. A brain injury has life long impacts on the victim and their families. One of the best ways to reduce your risk of such an injury is to wear your helmet while riding a bike. While there’s no arguing that bicycle helmets reduce the risk of injuries to the face, head, and brain, they do not offer completely failsafe protection. Bicycle Safety starts with wearing a correctly fitted helmet, includes maintaining a optimal functioning bicycle, practising road safety rules and having brightly coloured clothes to ensure other road users can see you clearly especially in the night. Like and share this post with friends and family to help keep their brains safe when riding a bicycle! 14.01.2022 Is your child complaining of headaches months after a concussion injury Have you been experiencing headaches since that sports related Concussion injury a few weeks ago Did you know that headaches are one of the most common symptoms after concussion in children and adults ... Concussion is a traumatic brain injury that changes the way the brain functions. Concussions can occur as a result of a direct hit to the head (by the ground or an object), or from violent shaking of the head and neck like whiplash injury in car accidents. Immediately after a head injury, a child or an adult can have symptoms that include headache, confusion, memory loss/amnesia for the time around the injury, foggy thinking, dizziness, double vision, slurred speech, problems with coordination, or loss of consciousness.Fortunately, the symptoms of a single simple concussion resolve in a week or less for most people, but a few children and adults will have headaches and other symptoms related to concussion for weeks or even months after their injury. Immediately after a concussion injury, the child or adult will require medical assessment to rule out any major injuries such as broken bones or skulls, or internal brain bleeds. If all major injuries has been ruled out and you or your child is still experiencing headaches months after a concussion injury, it is important to be assessed by a Headache and Migraines trained Expert Physiotherapist to help overcome post concussion headaches. Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Physiotherapists are Watson Headache Approach for Headaches and Migraines trained to effectively assess and treat Post Concussion Headaches. 14.01.2022 Have you been told that your neck pain that goes down your arm or lower back pain that goes down your leg is due to nerve impingement or nerve damage When someone has neck pain that shoot down the arm or lower back pain that shoots down the leg, therapists often assume that there is a nerve impingement or nerve damage causing the pain in the arms or legs. However most of the times this is very rare and unlikely. A more likely cause of shooting pain down your arm or leg... is peripheral nerve sensitisation. Peripheral nerve sensitisation occurs when inflammation sensitises the nerve coming out from our lower back spine or neck spine with movement or pressure. Commonly in physiotherapy we call this poor neural gliding. It is associated with local inflammation which reduces the ability of the nerve to glide up and down as we move our body. By performing neurodynamic tests such as straight leg raises or slump tests, our Expert Physiotherapists at My Favourite Physio are able to rule in or rule out a poor neural gliding problem. Once poor neural gliding is confirmed as the cause of your shoot pain, our Expert Physiotherapists use a variety of hands on treatment and specific exercises to reduce the inflammation and pressure on the nerves to help you overcome your shooting pain. If you are experiencing pain down the legs and arms, and you have tried to stretch out or massage tight muscles with limited relief, ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 to speak to one of our Expert Physiotherapists today. 14.01.2022 Did you know that up to 33% of neck pain patients experience dizziness And up to 74% of whiplash injury patients experience dizziness There are several potential causes for dizziness in patients with neck pain including: - Cervical vertigo - Vertebral artery insufficiency... - Minor brain injury in cases of whiplash - Vestibular disorders - Side effects of medication If you have seen the Optometrist, Ear Nose and Throat specialist about your dizziness and had extensive investigation and be told that your vision and hearing or inner ear is not contributing to your dizziness. Maybe it is time to actually see an Expert Physiotherapist for your dizziness and neck pain. Here at My Favourite Physio our Expert Physiotherapists have undertaken extensive training to assess and treat Cervical Vertigo. Cervical vertigo is a condition whereby you experience dizziness, light headedness and visual impairments such as blurry vision due to your neck joints. People often think of the ears, brain, eyes and sinus when investigating for causes of dizziness. Unfortunately most of the time the neck joints are excluded in testing for causes of dizziness. However, studies and evidence is now showing that the neck joints can have a relationship with dizziness. Here at My Favourite Physio we have been getting great results for patients who have presented with issues of dizziness, lack of clarity and visual disturbance along with neck pain and stiffness by treating their neck joints. 13.01.2022 10th September is R U OK? Day R U OK?Day is our national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone to ask, "Are you OK?" 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us.You dont have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK. This year the theme for R U OK? Day is "Theres more to say ...after R U OK?" Step 1. Ask R U Ok? Be relaxed, friendly and concerned in your approach. Help them open up by asking questions like "How are you going?" If they dont want to talk, dont criticise them. Tell them youre still concerned about changes in their behaviour and you care about them. Avoid a confrontation. Step 2. Listen with an Open Mind Take what they say seriously and dont interrupt or rush the conversation. Dont judge their experiences or reactions but acknowledge that things seem tough for them. If they need time to think, sit patiently with the silence. Step 3. Encourage Action Ask: "What have you done in the past to manage similar situations?" Ask: "How would you like me to support you?" If theyve been feeling really down for more than 2 weeks, encourage them to see a health professional. You could say, "It might be useful to link in with someone who can support you. Im happy to assist you to find the right person to talk to." Step 4. Check In Pop a reminder in your diary to call them in a couple of weeks. If theyre really struggling, follow up with them sooner. You could say: "Ive been thinking of you and wanted to know how youve been going since we last chatted." Ask if theyve found a better way to manage the situation. If they havent done anything, dont judge them. Stay in touch and be there for them. Genuine care and concern can make a real difference. 13.01.2022 Have you been told that growing up you needed double nappies for your hips Do you experiencing hip pain on and off over your early twenties and thirties Have you been told that your baby has clicky hips If you answered yes to the above statements, then it’s likely that you had Developmental Dysplasia of the Hips (DDH) as a baby and so does your baby. ... Hip dysplasia refers to the general instability or looseness of the hip joint. The exact cause(s) are not known. However it is widely believed that hip dysplasia is developmental. This is because hip dysplasia is known to develop around the time of birth, after birth, or even during childhood. This is also why hip dysplasia is often referred to as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Hip dysplasia has a wide range of severity. In some children the ligaments around the hip joint are loose allowing the head of the thigh bone to slide around in the socket of the pelvic bone, making it a subluxable hip. Other times the head of the thigh bone pops in and out of the socket of the pelvic bone, making it a dislocatable hip joint. At other times, the head of the thigh bone is sitting outside of the socket of the pelvic bone, making it a dislocated hip joint. It is currently believed that infants are prone to hip dysplasia for the following reasons: Hip dysplasia is approximately 12 times more likely when there is a family history. Genetics plays a role, but is not a direct cause of hip dysplasia. If a child has DDH, the risk of another child having it is 6% ( 1 in 17 ) If a parent has DDH, the risk of a child having it is 12% ( 1 in 8 ) If a parent and a child have DDH, the risk of a subsequent child having DDH is 36% ( 1 in 3 ). The good news is DDH can be effectively corrected with early intervention, using a Palvik Harness. This is the Gold Standard for the treatment of DDH. The sooner a Palvik Harness is fitted, the better the outcomes for DDH. 12.01.2022 Are you starting to lose hope of ever seeing your child walk Have you been told that your child with special needs would never walk Did you know that the brain is very mouldable and capable of learning, changing and adapting as a result of experience. This is known as neuroplasticity. There are two types of neuroplasticity, Functional plasticity which refers to the brain's ability to move functions from a damaged area of the brain to other undamaged areas, and Structu...ral plasticity which refers to the brain's ability to actually change its physical structure as a result of learning. The first few years of a child's life are a time of rapid brain growth. At birth, every neuron (nerve cell)in the brain has an estimated 2,500 synapses; by the age of three, this number has grown to a whopping 15,000 synapses per neuron. Neurons that are used frequently develop stronger connections and those that are rarely or never used eventually die. Conversely, new connections can be made in the brain when learning takes place in the environment where a child is stimulated to learn new movement skills. This is why Early Intervention in the first 5 years of life is critical for a child’s development. Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists have been able to effectively implement Early Intervention Physiotherapy to successfully help many babies and children learn to roll, crawl, sit, stand and walk! Even the little ones who the medical team has said may not ever walk. The truth is brain neuroplasticity should never be underestimated, a child’s potential to learn is often times beyond logical reasoning. 08.01.2022 Wondering what Core Muscles are How do Core Muscle help your back pain When people experience lower back pain and seek treatment often, they hear the phrase core muscle strengthening or weakness in the core muscle as the main cause of lower back pain. But what is the core muscles? And what do they do? When you think of core muscles you probably think of having six packs but really core muscles are deep muscles that are positioned next to the spine in a cylin...der like shape. It wraps around the entire spine and plays a big part in your spines stability. The human spine is actually designed to be very mobile and flexible. This is because it has to allow movement. But too much movement in the spine can be harmful as it causes joint damage. And so, this is where the core muscles step in. Core muscles will contract and brace the spine before and during movement so that it limits exactly how much movement occurs in the spine so that there is no excessive stress placed on the joints of the spine! What this means is that if you have poor ability or strength to turn on your core muscles, the spine will be too free to move placing unwanted stress on the individual joints of the spine leading to damage to the joints and muscle spasm of the superior muscles around the lower back which ultimately result in lower back pain! This is when an Expert Physiotherapist is able to help you retrain your core muscles to help you overcome your Back Pain and regain movement to get back to active living! So if you are sick of back pain holding you back from enjoying the lifestyle you want, ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 to book an appointment with one of our Expert Physiotherapists today! #myfavouritephysio #physiotherapy #beabetteryou #physio #bankstown #lowerbackpain #lowbackpainrelief #coremuscles #flexibility #lowbackpain

07.01.2022 Fell over on a night out and woke up with a sore ankle Twisted your foot while playing netball or soccer Ankle pain stopping you from running Ankle injuries often occur when people twist or roll over on their ankles when walking or running . For some people it is a mild ankle sprain when they stepped onto uneven ground and felt their ankle roll in as they quickly saved themselves, while for others it was a major ankle injury when they missed a step and fel...l down a fight of stairs and for some others it was a sporting injury when they twisted to change direction awkwardly on their feet and collapsed from a sudden sharp pain in their ankles. No matter how an ankle injury happened, it is very important that it is looked at immediately and treated correctly. Ankle injuries can include mild strains of the ligaments to complete ruptured of the ligaments and fractures of the ankle bones. Because we stand on our feet all the time , ankle injuries can take up to 6 to 12 months to return to 100% pain free function. A common mistake most people make is that they ignore the ankle swelling when they first twisted or injured their ankle, put up with the ankle pain, hobble on their ankle for days or weeks hoping that the ankle will heal itself. Eventually they stop feeling the ankle pain, however what they will often experience is that the ankle feels unstable and they often feel the ankle give way or roll in under them or they find that the ankle aches when they start to run or play sports. If that is how your ankle feels, then its likely that you have old scar tissue and ligament damage in your ankle from your ankle injury that hasnt healed properly. Although its best to have ankle injuries treated immediately for the best outcomes, Its NEVER TOO LATE to have your ankle injury looked at properly by an Expert Physiotherapist. If you want to get back to painfree active living, ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 to speak to one of our Expert Physiotherapists today. #anklepain #anklesprain #anklesprains #myfavouritephysio #running #physio #physiotherapy #anklerecovery #bankstown

07.01.2022 7th September is World Duchenne Awareness Day Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in every 3,500 live male births (about 20,000 new cases each year worldwide). Because the Duchenne gene is found on the X-chromosome, it primarily affects boys; however, it occurs across all races and cultures. The goal of Duchenne Awareness Day 2019 is to raise awareness on importance of nutrition in ...Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. DMD results in progressive loss of strength and is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes for dystrophin. Because dystrophin is absent, the muscle cells are easily damaged. The progressive muscle weakness leads to serious medical problems, particularly issues relating to the heart and lungs. Young men with Duchenne typically live into their late twenties. There is currently no cure for DMD. Physiotherapy can help increase and prolong the ability to walk for a boy with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Physiotherapists play an important role in monitoring and maintaining overall physical health for a boy with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Signs of Duchenne: Listed below are the common signs of Duchenne. Has a hard time lifting his head or has a weak neck Is not walking by 15 months Has a hard time walking, running or climbing stairs Is not speaking as well as other kids his age Needs help getting up from the floor or walks his hands up his legs in order to stand up Has calves that look bigger than normal Walks on his toes and waddles Walks with his legs apart Walks with his chest pointed out and back concave in. 07.01.2022 Ever had your heart sink into the bottom of your socks when you heard a loud thud then a moment of silence followed by aloud crying It’s every parent’s nightmare to run into a room to find their little one lying on a floor face down crying because they have fallen over and bumped their head Children often bump or bang their heads, and it can be difficult to tell whether an injury is serious or not. Any knock to the head is considered a head injury. Head injuries are... classified as mild, moderate or severe. Many head injuries are mild, and simply result in a small lump or bruise. Mild head injuries can be managed at home, but if your child has received a moderate or severe injury to the head, they need to see a doctor. A mild head injury or concussion is when your child: - may display altered level of consciousness at the time of the injury - is now alert and interacts with you - may have vomited, but only once - may have bruises or cuts on their head - is otherwise normal. You should seek medical advice if your child has any of the above symptoms of mild head injury, and you are worried about them. Otherwise, continue to observe your child for any of the signs and symptoms listed under Moderate or Severe Head Injuries below. A moderate or severe head injury, is when your child: - lose consciousness - be drowsy and not respond to your voice - be dazed or shocked - not cry straight after the knock to the head (younger children) - be confused, have memory loss or loss of orientation about place, time or the people around them - experience visual disturbance - have unequally sized pupils or weakness in their arm or leg - have something stuck in their head, or a cut causing bleeding that is difficult to stop, or a large bump or bruise on their head - have a seizure, convulsion or fit - vomit more than once. You should call an ambulance immediately if your child has a moderate or severe head injury. If you are concerned about your child after a head injury, always seek medical advice from your Family Doctor. 04.01.2022 Worried about Your Childs Feet? We can Help! Are you worried about your childs feet but everyone is saying they will grow out of it? This toddlers mum was worried from the time he started walking at 13 months old that his feet were very turned out and his left foot had a bend in the midfoot. She consulted several GPs, Paediatricians and Orthopaedic Specialists who all told her that it will get better over time and nothing can be done except to put him in good sho...es. 10 months later, it didnt get better in fact they were getting worse, despite wearing supportive shoes. She eventually found My Favourite Physio and we met her little boy at 23 months old. Normal feet should be forward facing and with a straight outside border, photos taken from the back of the legs, a normal foot should only have the little toe and maybe the fourth toe visible. This toddlers second toe could be seen from the back on the right leg and his big toe could be seen from the back on his left leg. His foot bone in the midfoot was collapsed and starting to form abnormally. Fortunately his foot was still correctible. We recommended serial casting to correct his foot position and after 8 weeks of serial casting his feet have improved significantly. Photos taken from the back of legs show only his little toe can be seen on both his feet. His mum is extremely pleased at his progress in a matter of weeks. We had customised orthotics made to provide support to his midfoot to ensure that his feet are supported in the corrected position so that the feet bone grow in the correct alignment over the next few years until he is 5 years old. If this child was seen at 10 months old, when his mother started becoming concerned, we would have saved his parents 10 months of unnecessary worry and stress. So DONT put up with another day of worry! Ring My Favourite Physio on (02)9790 4233 to make an appointment to see one of our Paediatric Physiotherapists for the best treatment options to correct your childs feet. #myfavouritephysio #paedsphysio #kidsphysio #bankstown #correctivefeet #babyfeet #serialcasting #beabetteryou

04.01.2022 Have you noticed that baby has a head tilt Did you know that it’s not normal for babies to tilt their heads Babies should be holding their heads straight and in line with their bodies when they are lying on their backs, or on their tummies or when supported in sitting and in standing. When a baby is tilting their head, it’s likely because there is a tight neck muscle on one side of their neck. That muscle is called the Sternocleidomastoid muscle which goes from the... chest bone and collarbone in the centre of the chest to the bone at the back of the head behind the ear. It is a condition called Torticollis and baby was born with the tight neck muscle right from Day 1. It isn’t a result of what Mummy did or didn’t do during the pregnancy. Often it happens in babies who are firstborns or in bigger babies because they were curled up stuck in one position in mummy’s tummy. The issue with Torticollis is that the tight neck muscle tends to restricts movement of the head to one side as well as a tilt, while the neck muscles on the opposite side of the neck is not strong enough to counter the tight neck muscle. So baby will tend to only look to one side when they are lying on their backs. Over time, if baby’s head shape will start to flatten on the side that they lie on all the time. The other thing about Torticollis is that it seems to come and go.This is because the tight neck muscle may stretch after a few weeks and then when baby has another growth spurt, the neck muscle is not as flexible so again it becomes tight and baby’s head is pulled to one side. The cycle continues until baby stops growing which is between 18-21 years old! The Good News about Torticollis is that it can be easily corrected and managed with Physiotherapy! Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists sees many babies with Torticollis and get great results! If you notice that baby is tilting their head or prefers to look to one side one, ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 to book an appointment with one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists today! 04.01.2022 Lost the spring in your run Experiencing of recurrent heel pain or foot pain after a run Did you know that during running the ground reaction forces at the centre of pressure in your foot can increase up to 250% of your body weight!! Thats a lot of weight that your foot muscles have to take before they spring you off the ground. So its no wonder that over time your foot and calf muscles can become overworked, tight and fatigued to the point of causing you recur...rent foot and heel pain. Ask yourself how often are you stopping to look after your calf and foot muscles in comparison to the time and distance you spend running each week How much time do you spend stretching or rolling out your calf and foot muscles a week compared to the time you spend runnin If you are only spending 5 minutes per running session stretching your leg and foot muscles for each 1 hour run, then you are not spending enough time stretching out your tight calf and foot muscles to allow them to remain flexible and working at optimal capacity. 3 Top Tips to restore the spring in your step: 1. Warm up with stretches for 20 minutes before running and cool down with stretches for 20 minutes after running to reduce the risk of heel and foot pain. 2. Make one training session a week a Stretching session - working on each muscle group including arms, upper back, lower back, hips, knees, calves and foot muscles. Running actually involves all the muscles in your trunk, hips and feet. Keeping your body flexible and stretched will improve your running performance. 3. Dont ignore that recurrent heel and foot pain, see an Expert Physiotherapist to have it correctly assessed and treated. Often ignoring the recurrent heel and foot pain results in muscle and ligamentous fatigue or chronic inflammation and swelling in the foot and ankle that can lead to nasty ankle sprains and fractures that take you out of running for long periods of time. To find out how our Expert Physiotherapists at My Favourite Physio can help you to overcome your heel and foot pain so that you can get back to running at your best, ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 today.

02.01.2022 Sit Up Straight! Dont sit so close to the TV Screen Dont watch TV all day, turn it off and go out to play ! Weve all been told by our parents, from a young age, to sit up straight and avoid long hours in front of the computer and sitting in front of the TV. This is because our parents notice that we are slouching in poor posture when sitting too close tothe TV! Poor posture is the worst enemy for headaches and migraines, because poor posture causes stiffness and mi...salignment of the first three joints of the neck. This increased stiffness and misalignment of the first 3 joints of the neck then leads to Headaches and Migraines. Therefore it is crucial that you maintain upright good posture when you are sitting and working at a computer or when relaxing in front of the TV. If you are working in the office get into a habit of getting up and moving out of your working position for a few minutes every few hours before getting back to work. This will allow you to perform neck and shoulder stretches to prevent stiffness and pain from sitting in one position for too long. If youre on the phone or reading books, elevate the phone and book so that you avoid looking down at the screen Little adjustments in your daily life can help you obtain good posture. So act now and start getting into better posture! 01.01.2022 Does your shoulder feel swollen and tender to touch Have you been told that you have tendinitis in your shoulder Are you waking up from pain when you roll onto your shoulder If you answered yes to any of the above statements, then you will probably benefit from Kinesio Taping to help reduce the swelling and inflammation in your shoulder and to promote healing in the tendons and muscles of your shoulder joint. ... Wondering what is Kinesio Taping Kinesio Taping is a rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to assist the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s normal movement. In the case of the shoulder joint, Kinesio Taping used as part of the Physiotherapy treatment, provides support to the shoulder joint without limiting your shoulder movements. 01.01.2022 Have you experienced a sudden sharp pain in your heel Heard a snapping sound when you landed awkwardly at basketball Couldnt put your foot down to walk due to pain in your calf and heel If you answered YES to any of the above, you might have ruptured your Archilles Tendon The Achilles tendon, is a large ropelike band of fibrous tissue in the back of the ankle that connects the powerful calf muscles to the heel bone. Sometimes called the heel cord, the Archilles Tendon ...is the largest tendon in the human body. Its function is to allow you to point your foot and stand on tiptoe which is vital in activities such as walking, running, and jumping. A complete tear through the tendon, which usually occurs about 2 inches above the heel bone, is called an Achilles tendon rupture. Archilles Tendon Rupture doesnt just happen to athletes, although it is most common in middle age men who are weekend warriors playing sports like basketball, tennis, badminton. The Achilles tendon can grow weak and thin with age and lack of use. Then it becomes prone to injury or rupture. Achilles tendon rupture is more common in those with preexisting tendinitis of the Achilles tendon. So if you have been experiencing pain and swelling in the back of your heel, you might have chronic Archilles Tendinitis. People who have Arthritis or Diabetes are also more at risk of Archilles Tendon Rupture. Medications such as corticosteroids and some antibiotics can also weaken and increase the risk of rupture of the Archilles Tendon. The key to successful rehabilitation of an Archilles Tendon Rupture is Early Intervention! Treatment options depend on the extend of your injury and may vary between resting and casting the foot to surgical intervention to repair the Archilles Tendon. The most common mistake we see at My Favourite Physio, is people tend to ignore the pain for weeks, thinking itll get better soon. Instead the best thing to do is to seek advise from your family GP or an Expert Physiotherapist. So if you are struggling with your calf and ankle pain, dont wait, ring My Favourite Physioon (02) 9790 4233 or PM us to speak to one of our Expert Physiotherapist today!

01.01.2022 Did your child come home sad today because they were bullied in school Are you experiencing workplace bullying yourself or even schoolyard bullying from parents in your child's school Bullying can happen in many forms, from name calling to exclusion of play and passive aggressive remarks at social events. It's never nice to be at the receiving end of unkind words or behaviours. It is often hard for adults to cope with bullying and even worse for children and adol...escents. Unfortunately, bullying does happen. Here at My Favourite Physio, we believe in empowering our families and clients who we see because we believe that Physiotherapy is not just about gross motor skills and the ability to run, hop, skip and jump. Physiotherapy is about empowering the children and adults we see to live their best potential, enjoy active living without pain and to be able to participate within the community with peers and family. We empower our clients who face bullying by explaining that Bullies bully because of 3 Main Reasons: 1. Bullies feel threatened by your achievements and success; 2. Bullies are jealous of you, who you are, what you have and what you have achieved; 3. Bullies bring you down so they feel better about themselves. Bullying is a result of issues the BULLY HAS and NOT YOU, knowing this fact will help empower the person who is being bullied. We empower our clients to take the following Action steps to handle bullying at school, 1. STOP, GO, TELL. Put your hand up and say "Stop, I don't like it", Move away from them, If the bully persists, Go and Tell a teacher. 2. Talk about what happened with your parents/trusted adult rather than keep it inside yourself. 3. Keep focusing on your goals, don't let the bullies distract you from living your best life! Keep winning at what you do best!
