23.01.2022 So you want to do a pull up? Its one of my most wanted performance goals. Especially for some of my female clients. Why? Its a good indicator of upper body strength. It looks great and works every muscle in your back and lets face it, back muscles look sexy. - - I have come up with a training progression diagram to help you get from zero to one if you dont have any assistance. In my time personal training I would still say the best way to learn to do a pull up is with s...omeone spotting you. Youre body needs to learn how to do the movement. The more you do, the more it will pick up the most efficient way to do it. If you have an assisted pull up machine to use, it works great to help you progress. Resistance bands work well too, but dont rely on them to build up to your first full rep. - - It makes sense to make your whole back strong seeing your back will be lifting you. Throwing in barbell rowing exercises into your routine will help. Biceps also help get you up, so training them is wise. - - Of course the lighter you are, the easier its going to be to pull yourself up. So lose some weight if you have to. A couple of extra kilos makes it even harder to get up, especially if you have poor upper body strength. Another important factor to consider is your grip strength. Seeing your hands will be holding you up, stronger hands and grip strength means better stability and endurance. Train your core too. Stability exercises work best. All the time wasted in the gym for some people for absolutely nothing. As a trainer its heartbreaking to see. I love it when I see someone in the gym changing or when one of my clients I train progress week in week out and make positive body and mentality changes due to their efforts and results.
