19.01.2022 Evelyn has a Skin Prick test once a year for a number of food items and animals. The things she’s allergic to present as a hive on her arm and they measure the size of the hive and record the results. Evelyn said it doesn’t hurt, it just gets very itchy. She was super brave and patient and we are so proud of her. Ev’s allergies remain the same this time, however a small glimmer of hope is showing for her peanut allergy, we were told not to get our hopes up but it’s shifting ...in the right direction and we should know what it’s going to do by the time she starts school. For us, skin prick testing is so important to keep on top of Ev’s allergies and to identify opportunities to undergo supervised food challenges, like her baked milk challenge last year. We are told that because Evelyn can tolerate baked dairy, she has a higher chance of outgrowing her milk allergy completely. We also work hard on Evelyn’s gut health throughout the year to support a healthy immune system. Here are some photos of her visit. Evelyn wanted to tell other children about her skin prick test #raisingawareness NSW Ambassador for @my_food_allergy_friends

17.01.2022 It’s been a while since I’ve introduced myself on here, so to all the new followers, here is a little background. Hi I’m Jackie, founder/creative director of My Food Allergy Friends. Entrepreneur, author, traveller, and mum to two beautiful boys Finn 17, and Thai 11. When my second child was diagnosed with 7 food allergies at 9 months I was shocked to find little to no allergy education for young children. ... After realising the need for allergy education, I went on to produce the loveable book charters Thai & Rabbie who teach kids how to be Food Allergy SMART. I now have five children’s books, one parent guide, a string of visual allergy resources, online programs, and medical bags. I founded the Food Allergy SMART Program for schools and childcare centres and also have an online program for schools, along with my very popular live allergy awareness sessions for early learning services and schools. As a contact point for thousands of parents, I also saw a real lack of family education and anxiety, so together with Food Allergy Counsellor Simone Albert, we Co-Founded Allergy Masterclass together. Bridging the gap between the diagnosis and providing allergy support and practical education for families. I was originally born in England, left home at 19 to travel the world three times before settling in New Zealand for many years. Australia has always been my first love and has been home for 13 years and always will be. Things you may not know about me. I love to create and work never feels like work as it is my passion to help others. I love photography, travel, I’m a chocoholic and love all things retro. I’m obsessed with Palm Springs. I like to challenge the status quo so if something isn’t working, let’s try and find a solution. This is the driving force behind My Food Allergy Friends and the Food Allergy SMART Program. 17.01.2022 Over the coming four weeks I'll be helping parents prepare for school with tips, resources, and a special online event for parents. The date to be announced soon.

13.01.2022 October is a great time to start focusing on preparing your child for school next year. Here are some ideas for role play. What would you do if a friend offered you food? What would you do if your throat felt funny? What would you do if someone has a birthday and you were given cake?... How would you explain what food allergies are if someone asks? What would you do if you felt unwell but you know you have only eaten your own food? Knowing how to respond to different situations will give your child the confidence they need to manage each new situation that may arise at school.

09.01.2022 For our Perth Food Allergy Friends Halloween is just around the corner and our friends at Allergy Support Hub are hosting an allergy-friendly Spooktacular Halloween on Sunday 25 October from 9.30am 12.30pm at the Palms Centre Subiaco, WA. There will be a trick or treat map to follow and find treats, activities, and info along the way. Plenty of fun for the kids and stalls for the parents to browse from local and national allergy providers and companies. I’ll be there virtua...lly at 11am talking about managing events when you have allergies, focusing on Halloween and Christmas. There will also be a chance to meet Thai (virtually), does your child have a question they would like to ask him? I’m also donating a back to school pack and I will announce the winner on the live feed. The lucky winner will receive a 'get ready for school pack', with a medical bag, books, and some posters that they can share with their school. This awesome family-friendly event is free to attend but bookings are required for contact tracing. See you there! https://www.trybooking.com/BLNTL

09.01.2022 The end of year countdown for schools and childcare...

07.01.2022 Halloween has always been about dress up for us. Our family all dress up and join in the fun at Halloween. Wonder Women is normally in charge of the EpiPens and phone. Thai wears gloves so is allowed to take wrapped lollies, which he can swap for safe ones when we get home. We don't believe in giving our kids heaps of lollies so we also have a limit, it's always a fun family night out. With some areas not allowed to go out trick or treating due to COVID restrictions this year, the fun can still happen at home or with a few close friends. Enjoy getting dressed up at home, create a pumpkin together, and have your own Halloween party and make safe party food together.

04.01.2022 Do you have a child with FPIES? What do you find the hardest thing about managing this condition?

03.01.2022 Have you arranged a one-on-one meeting with your child's class teacher for 2021? Each year it's important to meet the teacher BEFORE THE START OF SCHOOL to discuss how best to manage the risk of anaphylaxis within the classroom and playground. Having this meeting before the start of school means everyone is on the same page from day one. They know what happens when other students have birthdays, communication is requested for extra activities that are happening at school, he...lp with inclusion, and you know what allergy awareness will take place with classmates. Positive communication between parents and the child’s teachers will help create a stress-free school year and a safer environment for your child.
