24.01.2022 Our previous Foundry LIVE guest presents - Di + Robert Elderton of Future Days recently released the packaging designs for Mitchelton Wines with quite a contemporary approach given they and the rest of Victoria were in lockdown. The approach? Create an entirely virtual environment! Check out how they pulled it off. "When the first COVID-19 lockdown hit Melbourne, we were in the midst of finalising location shoots for three new Mitchelton Luxury Collection packaging projects.... "Our solution was to build three environments with terrain and landscape generator software and shoot each bottle in a virtual environment. The software allows us to transform, erode, sculpt and paint each environment in real-time entirely on the GPU. "Inspired by conversations around 'how do we shoot on location', we had previously been having during lockdown, the images offer a glimpse of a potential alternate narrative when access to physical environments are excluded from a brand's visual assets." 22.01.2022 Foundry Alumni Profile - Lotus White Sugito, 2018 Graduate Lotus recently returned to her home state for a quick stay in light of COVID-19 and updated us on her journey so far post-Foundry. Tell us what your learning experience at Foundry was like: ... "With aspirations to be a graphic designer since the beginning of high school, I was passionate to pursue creative education. Foundry caught my attention with its progressive edge and Tasmanian story. "My Foundry experience was unique and exciting. I found myself engaged with content that reflected current industry news and topics in a way that redefines the delivery of creative education. This unconventional learning style catapulted our awareness and understanding of the creative scene. 22.01.2022 From concept to completion Foundry Grad, Madeleine Rafell showcases the workings behind her personal Branding + Identity piece. The brief: create a magazine front cover (for an existing magazine) to accompany an interview about your future self becoming influential in the design community.... "My chosen magazine, Flow, celebrates creativity, imperfection, and life's little pleasures. I pulled inspiration from previous covers to create an illustration using on-trend botanic motifs. The cover was sketched by hand and then painted using gouache. The Flow wordmark and stickers were made in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, closely replicating the magazine's cover style. Careful attention was paid to selecting multiple fonts consistent with Flow's carefree, uplifting aesthetic." Staying true to Flow magazine's focus on wellbeing, the interview charted Madeleine's pathway as a student, UX designer, author, and advocate for child emotional welfare.

21.01.2022 Student Work Showcase Check out Interior Design Diploma student, Hayley Vimpany's restaurant redesign concept. The brief: Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Hayley brought this idea to life with a modern twist by incorporating checkered floors, mix matched chairs throughout, and a combination of natural elements (timber, plants, stone).

20.01.2022 We recently came across a previous Design for Equity group assessment piece and had to share the love. Students were tasked with identifying a social/political issue that they were personally passionate about and believe more of society should be aware of. With a choice of picking a relatively unknown movement or a cause that could be made up, the focus was on personal investment and recruiting public support in order to make it to the final stage of launching, distributing a...nd testing the movement in the real world. This is where BruHug was born. "BruHug is a social movement created to bring people together on weekdays to socialise and destress. The project was inspired by the team's research into depression and anxiety rates due to isolation in Australia." Hit the link below to download the full BruHug proposal. https://bit.ly/31ji5Qq Props to Lucinda Morrow (Founder), Matthew Hedges + Alex Murray - the brains behind this sincere and powerful movement.

20.01.2022 Big congrats to our talented illustrator + Foundry teacher, Tony Flowers for the launch of his book, Small Town (with author, Phillip Gwynne + publisher, Penguin Books Australia) earlier this month. "Phillip Gywnne's expertly pared back text and Tony Flower's detailed illustrations combine beautifully in 'Small Town', an uplifting story to be read and explored with young readers and used as a springboard for important discussions about local and world events. So highly rec...ommended." - Children's Books Daily. Throughout the illustration process, Tony's students were lucky enough to see the book grow from the initial sketches to the finished artwork - providing a thorough overview of the process from the start to publication. 17.01.2022 Natasha Mulhall (Foundry teacher + talented photographer & videographer) provides the ultimate weekend adventure inspo with her shots of Tassie's rugged + refined West Coast. She captured the beautiful twists and turns using her drone (yep, she has a commercial licence), with the remaining shots taken while driving down into the eerie and mysterious fog. 16.01.2022 Foundry Discussion Series The Future of the Creative Industries - Featuring Foundry Teacher + OzHelp Tasmania Trainer/Mentor & Coach (and talented writer), Tracey Groombridge. What do you think will be the three most important skills to have when entering the creative industries in the near future?... Emotional intelligence, self-awareness and confidence in the work they do: - Employers are no longer looking for the person who is the most talented and supremely technically good, they are instead looking for people who are self-aware who are able to learn and teach others with wisdom and understanding. Adaptability and adjustment skills: - As COVID-19 has shown us those who adapt faster and easier area able to ride out the big waves of change better. There will always be change, but those that adjust and make it work for them will find a way through. An ability to translate complicated topics and issues so that they are relevant and understandable by the wider community, whether this be through art or other creative forms.

16.01.2022 Student Work Showcase | Chelsea Keith We're always keeping an eye out for fresh designs from our students to highlight and came across these unique pieces from Chelsea - created during Digital Design. "These designs were created in an attempt to take scenes from real-life imagery and translate them into a style that focused on simple linework and colour. I found that these more simple designs allowed me to focus on the aspects of my art I would usually shy away from."

15.01.2022 Foundry Discussion Series The Future of the Creative Industries - Featuring Foundry Teacher + Sustainable Design Educator, Designer and Artist, Dr Kirsty Máté. Why do you feel Tasmania has the opportunity to be the epicentre of the creative industries in Australia?... Tasmania is one of these rare and very special places where so many positive attributes really lend themselves to support creatives. The landscapes, all just minutes away from any urban areas are diverse and breathtaking, ready to inspire any aspiring creative. The communities of Tasmania are supportive and encouraging for those who want to give it a go. The lifestyle provides you 'space' to fulfil creative endeavours. The culture is rich, diverse and most importantly accessible - something mainland cities struggle with, just on purely practical terms - getting to cultural venues in large urban areas can be more difficult than its worth. You don't find that in Tasmania and with MONA here, my personal favourite art museum in the world - and I have seen many - you couldn't be anywhere better!

15.01.2022 Student Work Showcase - Clint Kinsella Check out Clint's proposed magazine cover for Monster Children - an assessment piece for Digital Illustration. "Surf, skate, beer, art, photography, reckless abandon. It's all there!"

15.01.2022 Foundry Discussion Series The Future of the Creative Industries - Featuring Foundry Teacher + Freelance Designer - Exhibition/Interior/Branded Space/3D Visualisation, Andrew Jones. Why do you feel Tasmania has the opportunity to be the epicentre of the creative industries in Australia?... Tasmania has a unique opportunity to be the epicentre of creative industries in Australia. It has always had people who are tenacious in exploring new mediums and now able to capitalise a brand renowned for quality and originality. We have an amazing balance of natural and metropolitan surroundings which I believe is conducive to creativity and the envy of many. Check out Andrew's recent projects below.

14.01.2022 Foundry Discussion Series The Future of the Creative Industries featuring Foundry Teacher + Digital Artist & Owner of TURNERvfx, Rich Turner. What is your dream for the creative industries in Australia?... Easy! I would love to see areas or pockets of different industries in one or two locations that work as a co-operative. This is something I have witnessed with several large world-class post-production studios in Soho, London. They don't fight for work, but share work and engage each other to handle different parts of a huge project, ensuring the community is thriving and everyone gets a slice of the pie.

14.01.2022 Foundry Discussion Series The Future of the Creative Industries - Featuring Foundry Teacher + Commercial and Documentary Photographer, Devaka Seneviratne (Dave). Why do you feel Tasmania has the opportunity to be the epicentre of the creative industries in Australia?... I'm brand new to Tasmania (and Australia) but one thing I noticed literally from the day I got here was a strong sense of design that extends to even the more mundane things; public facilities, bridges, pedestrian walkways to name a few. I have travelled a fair bit and I can safely say that it is a very cool place to be in. There is lots of inspiration in the fantastic landscapes, beautiful buildings both old and new, access to nature in her raw beauty and a strong sense of community and pride. It's a perfect melting pot of creativity, art and ideas and I think Tasmania can definitely position itself as an epicentre of design and other creative industries. Check out some of Dave's work in Sri Lanka and the Indian subcontinent below.

13.01.2022 Student Work Showcase - Taima Learmont. Film + Photography student, Taima showcases her ability to manipulate light + movement with these stunning shots. We asked Taima what key skills she has learnt so far during her Foundry journey ... "Being able to take feedback and use it to my highest advantage! I have found that even if you are confident with your work, getting someone else's eyes on it will help you see things that you have potentially missed and improve your work to the best of your abilities. "Communicating - whether it's to my class or a bunch of people I don't know, my ability to communicate has improved bucket loads and has given me the confidence to be able to show my worth in the industry. "And finally, I have learnt to never second guess. This was something I struggled with when I started, especially when it came to classes out of my comfort zone. But as I've gone through these experiences, I have found that even if you aren't confident in a piece, someone out there (a client) is loving it. And that's all that matters. Having someone be confident in you is sometimes all you need to realise the positive impact that you have created."

12.01.2022 Foundry Alumni Profile - Lucas Grenda, 2018 Graduate We recently checked in with Lucas - one of our first ever Foundry grads to see what he was up to after completing his Associate Degree of Applied Design. Check out what he's up to! What does life after Foundry look like?... "I am currently the lead graphic designer at Fingerprint Signs, and I have been employed since before my graduation at Foundry. I'm in charge of most of the visual aspects of the work that we put out here at this family run and 100% Tasmanian owned business. I am lucky to be under the wings of this team as they guide and grow me to be an ever better designer than before! As for the future? Who knows! Keep an eye out!" Tell us what your learning experience at Foundry was like. "Foundry is a completely different learning experience to anything you have experienced before. On one hand it is casual and comfortable, and on the other it is informative and deeply educational. I enjoyed my time on campus learning with like minded individuals and gaining tips and tricks with each new conversation I struck up." Congrats, Lucas! We're super proud of you

12.01.2022 Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance proposed cover | 50th anniversary celebration Foundry student, Alyssa Hibberd (@alyssa.may.art) explains her inspiration for this piece below: "The main plot of this book shows the author's relationship with his son as they travel across America together on a motorcycle. With this plot in mind, I decided to produce a double exposure illustration - creating the outline as a person wearing a motorcycle helmet, and the inside as a long empty road that you would come across when travelling across America."

12.01.2022 From concept to completion Foundry student, Mitchell Koay showcases the full process + technique behind an assessment piece for Digital Illustration.

12.01.2022 Foundry Discussion Series The Future of the Creative Industries - Featuring Foundry Teacher + Director, Camera Operator & Producer, Lara van Raay. What is your dream for the creative industries in Australia?... Pretty straight forward - funding. Funding and more funding so that creators can have the freedom to create. My dream would be to have a deeply well funded creative sector that is respected and valued as the vital service that it is in terms of well being and cultural value. I would love to see a flourishing media sector with Australian content given priority (like they do in France or Ireland) with a population that cherishes and demands to see its own people, voices and stories shown back to them. What do you think will be the three most important skills to have when entering the creative industries in the near future? Adaptability - being able to handle new situations, new technologies and an ever-changing world (in terms of expectations, social norms and technology) will be essential. This means keeping a fluid way of working and not getting locked into any set ways. Being agile in your thinking and being able to manage change fatigue is vital as well - as there's one thing for sure that the future holds - change.

Environmental objectives are achieved through the use of recycled materials such as old shipping containers, repurposed timber panelling, and biodegradable algae decor details."
