15.01.2022 SONGS FROM THE HOMELAND In the early 90’s I had something of an epiphanya realisation of how little we heard of the ‘Australian Experience’ on the radio and ...how good it felt whenever I heard songs that mentioned Australian place names, or captured a uniquely Australian character trait in some way. I wrote 'Songs From The Homeland’ to celebrate the artists who had kept the faith over many yearsthose dedicated to telling the Australian Story. That song led to the album Homeland and marked a turning point in my career. As much as the four previous albums: North, South Of These Days, Tropicali and The Return were successful ventures, it was obvious from what I was dealing with behind the scenes that the standard record company pathway was unsustainable financially. Anything short of a ‘hit’ meant that once the costs of production and promotion were repaid very little remained to sustain the artist financially. So I figured that a fully independent release and distribution was the only way I could see for an artist to get ahead... and that’s what we did! Lyn and I (and our sons) spent nights packing and wrapping CD’s and cassettesfulfilling daytime orders from the incredibly supportive independent retailers who understood first hand the machinations of the music business and were prepared to give us a go. That decision, and the overwhelming support of the country music fraternity, gave us the resources to tour wherever and whenever we wanted. It gave us the freedom to determine our future. I wish for every artist the same blessing. GC
