25.01.2022 We can't get to Guiseppe Basso's restaurant on Ilos De Palma on the Cinque Terre coast of Italy but we can try and recreate the excellent Seafood Marinara I had there a few years ago. You can discover who you are overseas. I discovered I was Australian when in Napoli ordering a marinara and wondering why there was no seafood in the pasta. As an Australian I just assumed that Spaghetti Marinara comes with seafood while in Italy and most of the world it is known as a tomato based sauce for spaghetti. Food is a great part of our journey through Europe & through life. We can attend many festivals that celebrate food & life on our next trip to Eastern Europe. (Guiseppe's Seafood Marinara was the best I have tried.)
25.01.2022 When people tell you they can take you on a Ukrainian tour they mean they have read a book and will show you where we were when the Russian tanks came over the border on Velykhden 2014. Only one Australian tour company went ahead of the 2nd ATO as international observers to thank the defenders of our tour territory & to assist civilians. Our tours have real people, real stories of patriotism, encounters with US, British, Polish & Russian agents (with US accents) on the streets, & real eye witness accounts from people that actually stood on the barricades. 24.01.2022 Our Ukrainian travel director in Kyiv always keeps busy between tours by assisting Womens Associations in Ukraine. It may be quite some time before Australians & New Zealanders can visit without serious restrictions when they return home. Ukraine now has the 8th highest number of SARS-Cov-2 active cases of any country that is actually reporting. We pray they will see some relief soon.

17.01.2022 Sad news. I never worked for Van Halen but like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Soundgarden and many others of they era they all loved doing covers of BUDGIE and claimed them as an influence. BUDGIE was the first heavy metal band to play behind the Iron Curtain in 1982 and I consider myself to be very fortunate to have been invited to produce tours for them in Eastern Europe & Australia. It gave me some great experiences with rock legends Burke Shelley, Steve Williams, & Craig Goldy from DIO, who joined the band for their concert tours around the world between 2007 & 2010 after the departure of talented UK Guitarist, Simon Lees. They provided me with a Crash Course in tour management and a wealth of knowledge via their decades of entertaining fans across the globe for which I am forever grateful.
16.01.2022 RATE ALERT: The AU to UAH exchange rate is very favourable now if you are purchasing goods from Ukraine or sending money to family/friends/charities. It is the result of a stronger AUD rather than a further weakening of the Ukrainian currency.
15.01.2022 I was asked yesterday by senior Ukrainian-Australians: "When will we get to see Ukraine again?" Honestly, maybe not in this lifetime. A vaccine will be needed and insurance costs will be high. Risk factors for people over 60 will be higher for at least a decade, as it was in Africa with Ebola, & Bird flu in Europe. Our next trip will hopefully be for Easter 2021. There are worse things for Kozaks than dying on Ukrainian soil. A life in exile hiding from your fears is likened to living a thousand deaths. Seeing the risks and finding ways to work around them IS exactly my training and my job title as an Industrial Supervisor & Trouble-shooter for Australian companies. Seeing Ukraine again is something I always work towards.
13.01.2022 I better let our pilot (Akbar Al Bakr) know that we need guarantees until 2023 or nobody in Australia will buy tickets. He's a shrewd operator and QATAR airways is the best way for us to fly to Ukraine with only one stop. Modern & efficient Airbus A350's between Australia & Doha and now a B-787 Dreamliner into Kyiv. We'll be back!

Нагадаю, що ще у жовтн на сес мсько ради було видлено 83 мльиони гривень на створення додаткових ковдних лжок у наших мських закладах та облаштування кисневих точок, придбання для лкарень додаткового обладнання, забезпечення потреби до кнця року в медикаментах, засобах захисту для медикв та збльшення мунципальних надбавок для ковдних бригад. наш мськ лкарн мають все необхдне для надання допомоги хворим. Але на сьогодн ситуаця по захворюваност досить тривожна: чи не щодня в Укран з’являються нов антирекорди. Я щиро бажаю, щоб новорчн свята внничани зустрли не в лкарн, а в смеиному кол. не наражали себе та рдних на небезпеку пдхопити врус. Тому в цьому роц головно внницько ялинки в Центральному парку м. Леонтовича не буде, а святков заходи будуть перенесен в онлаин-формат. Але ми збережемо традицю святково люмнац на магстральних вулицях та прикрашення центру мста. Та обов’язково встановимо на Маидан Незалежност вертеп, як ми це робили в минул роки. 10.01.2022 With travel overseas nearly impossible it's hard to visit the Odesa Opera House, London Bridge, Dnipro River or Hidropark in Kyiv but we can enjoy the view of where I once worked at the Sydney Theatre Company, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Parramatta River and Luna Park. All from the comfort of the top floor balcony of the local pub in Barangaroo where we can enjoy a glass of Tasmanian sparkling cuvee methode champenoise. I met a Ukrainian couple here on my last visit who invited me to join them after they spotted me wearing a Taras Shevchenko t-shirt. It's a small world with many attractions available to us. Public Transport (with mask): $2.50 All day.
10.01.2022 Today on channel Seven they screened Mighty Ships. The STENA BRITANNICA is how we travel from London to Amsterdam on a combined Rail-Ferry-Rail ticket with a private cabin. We do it when flights are cheaper to Heathrow than direct to Ukraine. In the past we have been able to cross UK, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia & Poland to Lviv, for less travel cost than a flight to Kyiv via Frankfurt or Amsterdam. It's due to the higher number of flights from Australia to Heathrow in the past & airlines having far more offers available to UK. I makes competition stronger forcing prices down. With QATAR not flying direct to Kyiv in the short-term future, these alternative & interesting routes to Ukraine can transform your holiday into a real European odyssey. 09.01.2022 When visiting Ukraine many places such as the abandoned Fort Tarakanivskiy are only accessible via the forests. Walking through the bush in my home city of Bankstown is great preparation for visiting the region. The sandstones strewn through the area reminds me of our visits to Novo Brusno near the Molotov-Ribbentrop line of bunkers & the Belzec concentration camp in Poland. We find Ukrainian cemeteries beside the local lagoons where the famous Brusno carved headstones can be found. Many have been destroyed by war or encroaching Polish farms but some remain intact. We search there for Ukrainian names. Many would be familiar to members of the diaspora whose families suffered forced migration from the zone or murder by KGB firing squads following the infamous Yalta agreement.
06.01.2022 Memorial at Zolotiy Potik near the Dniestr River. Major battles have taken place through this region for millenia. We stop and check for family names of our friends in the Ukrainian-Australian diaspora and meet locals who provide us with interesting stories about these less visited small towns & villages. 04.01.2022 Kamianets-Podilskiy in Ukraine has a rich history and the city on a rock withstood attacks for centuries until WW2. There is more to this city than just the castle that most visit on set tours. The town itself and the Fortress at Khotyn are a major attraction for tourists and a popular location for filming by movie producers. 03.01.2022 Ukraine in late 2021?: Visiting Europe and particularly Eastern Europe requires a lot of walking to access many places of interest. When in Australia we visit Wilpena Pound, Silverton, The Barossa, Kata Tjuta & Uluru. We prospect for sapphires in the Gulf Of Carpentaria and when we only have a day or a weekend, we have Captain Cook's Landing Place, Sydney Cove, plus an abundance of National Parks nearby to explore. Getting into better shape at home prior to departure will increase your holiday enjoyment. It can also prevent tour exhaustion & boost immune responses when we do go.
