22.01.2022 Caring for your loved ones can be very rewarding, but every carer knows that it can also be stressful, exhausting, and all-consuming. Respite services exist to support you - both My Aged Care and the NDIS can fund paid respite services as part of a support package, and you can also access respite services through local organisations. The Australian Government's Carer Gateway has more information, including info on emergency respite care to help at short notice. https://www.carergateway.gov.au/respite
15.01.2022 If you're feeling exhausted and overwhelmed as you juggle caring for an ageing parent and looking after your own family - often while working part- or full-time - you're not alone. Many carers say they suffer depression or stress, or feel overstretched and are considering leaving work. It's important to devote time to yourself, too - just like airline safety briefings remind you to put your own oxygen mask on first, you need to make sure to look after yourself too. Connect with your friends and loved ones, make time for things you love, and don't forget to ask for help wherever you can.
10.01.2022 Despite the heartbreak of caring for an ageing parent who is reaching the end of their life, there are so many precious moments to remember - moments of beauty amid the tears. Read on to share Kathryn Dwan's story as she talks about caring for her dying father in her teenage years. https://palliativecare.org.au/making-a-dying-parents-life-a
08.01.2022 Did you know that many carers can access financial assistance to support you as you care for a loved one? Carers Qld has compiled a great list of financial supports available to carers - check out their article for the details. https://carersqld.com.au/resources/benefits-and-allowances/
06.01.2022 Are you stressed and tired like so many people caring for their ageing parents and growing family? Here are a few tips and techniques to help you cope: Use your support networks. Whether it's asking friends and family for help, or just talking to them about what you're dealing with. Join a local support group and you can help each other when things are tough. Delegate where you can. Are your kids capable of pitching in with extra chores, or keeping their grandparents com...pany? Do you have siblings or cousins who can help with paperwork or errands? Perhaps your parents have their own friends who'd be happy to lend a hand. Prioritise what matters, and let go of the things that don't. It can be hard to accept that you can't do everything, but focusing on the things that truly matter in your life will give you energy for the times ahead. Practice self-care. Make sure you get exercise, proper nutrition, sleep, medical care - and a little time carved out for something that gives you joy. See more
