13.01.2022 Scammers have been targeting people with disability by emailing fake invoices, and attempting to access funding. 12.01.2022 We need to stop people putting people living with disabilities into aged care facilities, and give them more choices about housing .. this is an excellent model for change. #mylinkservices #supportcoordinator #ndis #ndisprovider #socialworker #disabilitysupport #goldcoast https://www.abc.net.au//disability-housing-accomm/12364150

12.01.2022 This is my letter to the GCCC I read in the Bulletin about the Councils plan to discuss the current Response to the Homeless Report. I write to add my thoughts. Being a Social Worker in the community can I suggest additional affordable housing options on the Gold Coast. In my practice I am contracted to DVA and I see Veterans, those who receive packages of funding, NDIS and private clients etc.... Housing seems to be an area where I am sought after to help! I have experience in this area but options are very limited with is heart wrenching. I also used to be with Rosies and DOH funded orgs. I have many clients who struggle with housing options, mostly but not all, in my case are older residents, two currently where family have moved in ie girlfriend/boyfriend and suddenly they are ‘TOLD TO LEAVE’ one even cancelled her independent unit to join family! Others who have mental health, many who cannot afford the high rents, have low finances, sometimes there is elder abuse... or DV or a number of other reasons and in this climate we could add business failure... Shelters are limited, DOH options are only in almost extreme/emergency cases. There is limited other options and mostly they are filtered through DOH. My suggestion would be to increase affordable housing options, St Vincent de Paul recently extended or opened new housing in Allied Drive but I’m sure this is limited. I have not yet seen it physically but one of my clients was in tears when she was given the keys. Even not as excellent as this is but small units In a dormitory set up for the homeless for an overnight or extended stay, surely we can find this, community orgs could staff it.....I used to look up at ALL the units in Surfers when we were trying to find beds for the homeless and wonder with all this money we cannot look after our own. To me I have no issue when I see the homeless in Surfers but I do wonder about their health and who is caring for them, sometimes it can be as simple as a marriage breakup then can set someone on that ‘road’. Then anxiety and MH can be a big part of the inability to re connect with a community. I am happy to be contacted on this or any other relevant issue.
