25.01.2022 This is the only book from the @cbcaustralia Older Readers shortlist that I’ve read, and yet my gut says, THIS IS BOOK OF THE YEAR FOR OLDER READERS! Ghost Bird is another book I have struggled to write about because I just don’t have the words to do it justice. I was privileged to be mentored by author, Lisa Fuller as I worked on the Indigenous Story Time series for @storyboxlibrary. During this time Lisa helped me unpack the misunderstandings and generalisations I hav...e formed around our First Nations people, and opened my eyes to the concept white privilege. My favourite part of this book is Lisa’s inclusion of her family’s language, peppered throughout the text. At times, I so desperately wanted to know the English meanings of these words before realising ‘there is my white privilege talking again!’ It is because of what Lisa has taught me that I am able to catch these thoughts and I realise I am, again, missing the point. This book has not been written for non-Indigenous readers so they will understand. The plot of a missing twin sister in a small town community was credible and convincing, the themes of family and culture strong, the writing was compelling and thrilling BUT mostly I want to read more stories like this one: Own Voices stories, stories that reflect contemporary experiences of Aboriginal youth, to see them represented as main characters, and to read more stories that aren’t about racism but help readers empathise with experiences of racism. 25.01.2022 Book Week in ISO! Melbourne Folk, I want to know? Have you found it restrictive or liberating to prepare for Book Week parades under Stage 4 restrictions? Thankfully, my happy-go-lucky boy was happy with a Wimpy Kid mask courtesy of @penguinbooksaus. Our school celebrated back in August and Ike found it quite amusing to log into his Webex session as Greg Heffley! #cbcabookweek #cbca2020 #bookweek2020 #bookweekparade #bookweekshare #diaryofawimpykid @bookweekcostumes @penguinkidsaus

15.01.2022 Well that’s enough of my crammed reviews ahead of today’s @cbcaustralia announcements! I have 30 mins to get some chores done before I watch the awards via YouTube this year. URL can be found on the NEWS page on CBCA website if you’re keen too.

11.01.2022 We embrace ALL things CBCA Book Week here... including the Book Week parade, so while Ike was happy with a simple costume this year (see previous post), it was another story for Cammy; a half-hearted costume just wasn’t going to cut it for this little bookworm! I have to tell you that creating an exceptional costume with what we had at home was probably my iso breaking point! After some ingenuity, Cammy worked out some clever ways to create a practically perfect Mary Poppin...s costume: Raid Mum’s wardrobe. Make a Mary Poppins hat from a paper plate, Black A3 cardstock and a faux bunch of flowers. Behead the flamingo from our watering can to make an umbrella handle. Make a mirror frame with a cardboard postage satchel. #cbcabookweek #cbca2020 #bookweek2020 #bookweekshare #marypoppins #welovebooks @bookweekcostumes @cbcaustralia See more

10.01.2022 Oh yes I do!!! I read for pleasure I read for sanity I read for routine I read for friendship... I read to curtail my loneliness I read as an antidote for my anxiety and sadness I read to understand I read for adventure I read for knowledge I read with my children I read in bed I read at the beach I read to keep moving forward I am ever grateful for my love of reading. It is this that drives my greatest passion to help people know the power of story.
