23.01.2022 It is with deep sadness that the Iyengar community learnt of Geeta Iyengars passing this morning. I am so grateful I managed to do a week long convention with her in 2009. She was so very fierce, and yet beautiful at the same time, gentle and cheeky in one moment, berating and provocative the next. I was terrified a lot of the time. I didnt want her to see me, I put on my invisibility cloak, avoided being anywhere near the stage. I learnt a lot that week, I st...ill have the notes somewhere. Skin to soul, Soul to skin.... the imprint she left in me of the inhalation-exhalation circuit, has never left me. That and much more... In this post I wish to simply give humble thanks to this incredibly strong woman, who suffered much congenital ill-health all of her life, whose mother died when she was 29, and thrust into the role of Matriarch of the Iyengar family, and principal teacher, after Iyengar himself, at the institute. Never married, devoting herself to her beloved Guruji, her father BKS Iyengar, and teaching her knowledge with all those who came to her. A lifetimes body of work and how to hold this and dispense this gift for future generations without loosing its purity in this day and age- these were her life tasks. And she carried it right up to the last moment. Teaching at the 10 day long centenary celebrations for her father, her deepest and unyielding teachings. As if she knew her time was near. With so much respect Geetaji, See more

21.01.2022 IYENGAR YOGA AND MENTAL HEALTH How Yoga Heals So Much More Than Just Your Body Internationally known yoga master B.S.K Iyengar says health goes beyond the phys...ical to the moral, intellectual, and spiritual Most people feel that they are healthy if they are not suffering from illness or pain, not aware of the imbalances that exist in their bodies and minds that ultimately will lead to disease. Yoga has a threefold impact on health. The health benefits of yoga include keeping healthy people healthy, it inhibits the development of diseases, and it aids recovery from ill health. But diseases are not just a physical phenomenon. Anything that disturbs your spiritual life and practice is a disease and will manifest eventually in illness. Because most modern people have separated their minds from their bodies, and their souls have been banished from their ordinary lives, they forget that the well-being of all three (body, mind, and spirit) is intimately entwined like the fibers of our muscles. Health begins with firmness in body, deepens to emotional stability, then leads to intellectual clarity, wisdom, and, finally, the unveiling of the soul. Health can be categorized in many ways. There is physical health, which we are all familiar with, but there is also moral health, mental health, intellectual health, and even the health of our consciousness, the health of our conscience, and, ultimately, divine health. These are relative to and dependent upon the stage of consciousness we are at. But a yogi never forgets that health must begin with the body. Your body is the child of the soul. You must nourish and train your child. Physical health is not a commodity to be bargained for, nor can it be swallowed in the form of drugs and pills. It has to be earned through sweat. It is something that we must build up. You have to create within yourself the experience of beauty, liberation, and infinity. This is health. Healthy plants and trees yield abundant flowers and fruits. Similarly, from a healthy person, smiles and happiness shine forth like the rays of the sun. The practice of yogasana for the sake of health, to keep fit, or to maintain flexibility is the external practice of yoga. While this is a legitimate place to begin, it is not the end. As one penetrates the inner body more deeply, one's mind becomes immersed in the asana. The first external practice remains dry and peripheral, while the second, more intense practice literally soaks the practitioner with sweat, making him wet enough to pursue the deeper effects of the asana. Do not underestimate the value of asana. Even in simple asanas, one is experiencing the three levels of the quest: the external quest, which brings firmness of the body; the internal quest, which brings steadiness of intelligence; and the innermost quest, which brings benevolence of spirit. While a beginner is not generally aware of these aspects while performing the asana, they are there. Often, we hear people saying that they remain active and light when they do just a little bit of asana practice. When a raw beginner experiences this state of well-being, it is not merely the external or anatomical effects of yoga. It is also about the internal physiological and psychological effects of the practice. As long as the body is not in perfect health, you are caught in body consciousness alone. This distracts you from healing and culturing the mind. We need sound bodies so we can develop sound minds. Light on Life , B.K.S. Iyengar #worldmetalhealthday #yoganusasanam
21.01.2022 Find out what the poses and what the preparation you have done before, has done for the breathing. I am not going to teach you pranayama as such, there is a ki...nd of spontaneous, improvised breathing, so that the breathing pattern is not dictated, enforced from the outside, but it comes about from the changes that have been wrought on the structure of the body- where there was hardness of the body, Where the thighs got puffed up and how that could be released. Its like when you want to conceive, there has to be appropriate timings. The body and mind has to be prepared. The body needs the capacity to conceive . The body needs that liveliness that Yoga gives. It cannot be created with greed or just because you want more - we need to appreciate and have gratitude for all that liveliness Raya Uma Datta #lyengaryoga #bksiyengar #pranayam

18.01.2022 Musings on the Yogic Path This evening Ive come home from the last session of a weekend intensive, with this incredible woman. Ive just spent a little time finding a photo online that captures her strength and wisdom gained; shes not the kind I would ask to take a selfie with. Im feeling exhausted and quite transformed. She teaches strongly and with such verve and warmth, and so much humour.. which didnt detract from the depth of what we needed to experience in our bod...ies. Karma Yoga ; the Yoga of Action. We must do and learn and experience in the body, the knowledge will come later. She emphasised much about always speaking the Sanskrit and understanding the names, something Ive long been interested in. As if the sounding of the words themselves hold keys and access points to the asana being named. She talked about how the asana had so many layers of meaning, about how we are called to Yoga, it is a divine calling and nothing can stop that. If you are meant to do, you will do! No force necessary! (with a little sideways jiggle of her head). She taught the simple poses, yet with such depth and dynamism I felt them all anew. Lots of repetition. Lots. I loved it. And set up near the front for each session. I felt like a fan-girl, but I think many were a little scared to get too close to the front, yet it wouldnt have mattered, she saw EVERYTHING! Shed make this funny little Uh-oh sound after we all came out of a long hold, or, as the case often was, a long series of repetitions, as if we were all hopeless, and someone would laugh, and then everyone laughed. It was refreshing; the laughter was release, as her teaching is intense and she wouldnt let anyone get away with anything sloppy. Lots of ego humiliation going down, but in a friendly way. Gulnaaz Dashti teaches in Pune India when she is not travelling the world teaching and berating and laughing with students. A thousand thankyous Great Spirit, for bringing Yog, and Gulnaaz Dashti, into my life See more

Once a routine is establish yoga will become part of your daily life and your life will be transformed in ways that you cannot fathom. 09.01.2022 Yes, I teach this style of yoga. The most unglamorous, no nonsense, straight up yoga that there is. No meditating on a golden light above your heart chakra. Just nuts and bolts, connect to your body and feel it, in all its strengths and weaknesses, yoga.

05.01.2022 On Sunday at Kensington school of yoga we celebrated the centenary of the birth of BKS Iyengar, the man who developed and refined his style of Hatha yoga. I had the privelage to teach a small section of the class , alongside my esteemed teachers- past and present. Around 60 people attended, with a shared meal with chai, plus screenings of old footage of Mr. Iyengar practicing with his children. It was a beautiful coming together of a dedicated community of teachers and students alike. Here I am up on the stage teaching Urdhva Hastasana. My sincere gratitude to my teacher and boss Darrin McNally for his gift of bringing his practice and learning to me.
