24.01.2022 Pfizer's Covid-19 trial has so far enrolled more than 43,000 people. Of those participants, 38,955 have completed the vaccine regimen, which consists of two injections spaced three weeks apart. At the time of the analysis which looked at data seven days after participants received a second dose a total of 94 people in the trial had confirmed coronavirus cases. However, the reported efficacy rate suggests that most of those who have gotten sick so far were in the placebo group.

19.01.2022 PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT GREAT BEGINNINGS CHILDCARE CENTRE NSW Health is upgrading health advice for the Great Beginnings Child Care Centre at Oran Park after new ...cases of COVID-19 linked to the centre have been confirmed since 8pm last night. The new cases, a family and an educator, attended the centre and are linked to a confirmed case previously reported on 13 October. Further information on the cases will be provided when they are counted in tomorrow’s numbers. The new cases attended before the centre closed on October 13. The centre has not reopened since then. The advice provided on 13 October was that people in a specific area of the centre were close contacts, but NSW Health is now expanding that advice to cover all staff or children who attended Great Beginnings at Oran Park between 2 and 13 October inclusive. These people are now all considered close contacts and must get tested immediately and self-isolate for a full 14 days from when they last attended. They must stay isolated for their full isolation period regardless of their test result. Contact tracing and investigations are continuing. Everyone plays an important role in helping to contain the pandemic by getting tested quickly and following social distancing rules. Get tested on the day you get symptoms don’t wait to see if they go away. Assume it’s COVID-19 until proven otherwise by a test. There is no limit on how many tests you can have. Testing is quick, free, and easy and most people receive their test result within 24 hours. If you have even the mildest of symptoms like a runny nose or scratchy throat, cough, fever or other symptoms that could be COVID-19, please come forward for testing right away. 19.01.2022 Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has delayed his announcement on the easing of further restrictions for metropolitan Melbourne due to a cluster of coronavirus cases in the northern suburbs of the city. He did, however, announce new changes to regional Victoria. When asked why he "dangled a carrot in front of Victorians," the premier responded: "Nothing can be guaranteed, except the fact that we will be guided by the data and the science. There are results that are pending a...nd we do not have those processed tests." It comes as Victoria recorded seven new cases of coronavirus on both Saturday and Sunday, bringing the rolling 14-day average to 4.6.

17.01.2022 Victorian Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton says he is confident the northern suburbs outbreak will be controlled and an announcement will likely be made on easing restrictions in 48 hours. He said Victoria is on track and that unknown source cases could soon drop to five over a 14-day period. We're just asking for 24 hours to 48 hours for a significant number of tests to come back when we know that there are 11 households involved in the outbreak.... I am confident [we will contain the outbreak]. I am not confident about the cases whose test results are yet to come back. We cannot contain what we are yet to identify. So there are some results to come through in the next 48 hours.

16.01.2022 In an open letter to Premier Daniel Andrews, a group of Senior Victorian Doctors, including surgeons Bob Millar and Geoffrey Wells, argues Victoria’s response to containing COVID-19 is causing severe harm, triggering a tsunami of mental illness and worrying decline in presentations for life-threatening medical conditions like cancer and heart attacks. "The current restrictions are unnecessary, disproportionate and must be lifted," the letter says. "The response to the virus will cause more deaths and result in far more negative health effects than the virus itself." Dr Wells said the doctors wanted the five-kilometre rule lifted, sporting clubs to be reopened, and for Victorians to be able to visit their families inside their homes and in aged care facilities, while adhering to strict social distancing and good hygiene.

15.01.2022 A Medical Journal of Australia study published on Wednesday found the likely infection rates were more than triple the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases detected by health authorities. The study analysed 5339 de-identified blood samples, from patients having routine blood tests, blood donors, and women having pregnancy checks, between late April and early June, capturing infections up to mid-May. If the results were extrapolated to all of Sydney, only one in 670 people had b...een infected during the city's first wave, according to the analysis. This results in a total of 7450 COVID-19 cases 3.5 times the 2118 confirmed cases officially detected at the time.

12.01.2022 Former Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos has published a searing critique of the seeming paralysis in decision making from the current Victorian Government. "Vic has met the under 5 threshold which some thought was unachievable. This was a very cautious target. Six of the seven of new cases are related to a known outbreak so the risk is manageable. The set reopening is gradual and safe so any delay is unnecessary. It's paralysis in decision-making," Ms Mikakos tweeted about 15 minutes into Mr Andrews’ press conference.

11.01.2022 A new strain of Covid-19 has emerged in Europe that mutated through minks kept on mink farms. Danish Health Minister Magnus Heunicke said about half of the 783 infected people in northern Denmark, had been infected with a strain stemming from the widespread mink farms in the area. There are between 15 million and 17 million mink across 1200 farms in Denmark - the world's largest producer of mink fur. The Danish government has decided to cull the entire population.... The risk of the new strain being resistant to a vaccine is too high and the Danish government has been joined by other European countries ordering the cull of mink farm populations. However, Francois Balloux, the director of the University College London Genetics Institute has called into question the decision. "There are thousands of mutations in SARS-CoV-2 arising constantly," he said on Twitter. "The fact that a few have been observed in minks will not change the strains in circulation in humans. If they were beneficial for the virus to infect its human host, they would be at high frequency already."
