18.01.2022 10 morning stretches to bulletproof your day! We understand that getting yourself up and moving in the morning is not always easy. Performing some stretches, however, and adding them into your daily morning routine can help start your day with a much-needed boost of energy, whilst providing added health benefits at the same time. Stretching has shown to help increase your flexibility, posture & blood flow, reduce lower back pain, muscle tightness and promote relaxation. This... sequence can take as little as 10 minutes, or longer if you wish to hold these poses for an increased duration, or simply wanting to repeat the whole sequence several times. 1. Cat-Camel Stretch: all fours, shoulders/hips directly over your wrists/knees. As you inhale, drop your belly, arching your back but keeping your shoulders rolled back and down. As you exhale, press into your hands into the ground and round your back. Repeat this for 5 breaths. 2. Downward Dog Stretch: all fours, push into your hands, straightening your arms as you raise your hips and straighten your legs. Your heels do not need to be touching the ground here and will not be for most. Take at 5 deep breaths. 3. Cobra Stretch: lie on your stomach with your hands flat beneath your shoulders. Tuck your elbows by your sides, gently raising your head and chest, keeping your hips and groin on the floor. Hold for 15-20 seconds and repeat 3-5times. 4. Spinal Twists Stretch: lying on your back, raise one of your knees, and gently roll it over to the opposite side. Ensure both shoulders remain in contact with the floor, stretch one arm out to the side, and slowly facing your outstretched arm. Hold for 15-20 seconds and repeat on the opposite side. 5. Knee to Chest Stretch: lying flat on your back, bring one knee to your chest and hold for 15-20 seconds before repeating on the other side. MORE IN THE COMMENTS!

13.01.2022 EDUCATION | FOAM ROLLING What people think it does: Breaks down adhesions/scar tissue restore sliding structures. NO! In human studies, it takes around a tonne of force to mechanically change the physical structure of someones muscle/fascia by 1%. Picture the wheel of a truck rolling over your leg, not a piece of foam. If we were that easily malleable/pliable we would mould into the shape of whatever we sat or lay on! Putting a 100kg bar on our backs to squat w...ould misshape our muscles. Our muscles/facia do not change shape this way and you cannot break down adhesions with your bare hands or by rolling them, despite what you may have learnt on your massage course or foam roller manual. This is a dated idea which no longer stands up to scientific scrutiny. What it really does: There is a neuro-physiological response The nervous system is changed, not the muscle itself. Foam rolling provides a sensory input (pressure/pain) to override another sensory input (the perception of muscle tightness or tightness). We are using the implement (the foam roller) to provide a concentrated stimulus to supersede other sensations which we are currently experiencing. Whilst warming up you may feel that your right glute is feeling very tight. You then foam roll it, providing a more intense stimulus. Once you get up you no longer perceive the glute to feel as tight. The structure of the glute itself has not changed, your perception of it has. Ever hit your knee on a chair and the rubbed it hard with your hand to reduce the pain? The foam roller works in a similar way, providing a new stimulus to an area already experiencing a sensation of discomfort. So why does this even matter? If it works, it works, so who cares? It matters because if we use the incorrect understanding of what a foam roller does, people will be spending much longer (20+ mins!) foam rolling to break down adhesions. However, the evidence suggests that the benefits from a neurophysiological response are short lived and so implementation of the foam roller should be short and sweet. 03.01.2022 What a magical and successful Sunday!! It was such a pleasure being a volunteer and providing Recovery Massage at @brissietothebay. There wasnt any other place I would rather be; to support this amazing charity I hold so close to my heart . Meeting these heros that have been diagnosed or have a family member or relative with Multiple Sclerosis and to see their courage and bravery to smash out a 10km, 25km, 50km & 100km cycle is just mind blowing. 01.01.2022 COVID-19 UPDATE: -Due to the Australian Government new regulations which affects all Remedial therapists & Myotherapists in Qld. - @myofunction_brisbane was added to the growing list of businesses temporarily closed over this period of time until government deems it safe to reopen. -... As heartbreaking as the situation is, I feel far from alone with so many of our friends and clients in many industries across Brisbane already having to deal with a sudden and extreme change of life. - We are not invincible or immune from COVID-19. It has made me realise that I have so much to be grateful for. In the midst of these challenging times banding together as a community and supporting each other is important than ever. - For my business @myofunction_brisbane its not the end.
