25.01.2022 Functional patterns, often referred to as anatomy trains, describe the interplay between the fascial fabric and the active muscle or tension within the muscle. The fibres that connect one muscle to another muscle, or where the muscle anchors to bone (the periosteum) are impacted by force, this force can be purposeful (activity) or latent (stress, clenching, injury). Regardless, these trains that pattern the body can become stuck, ridged, and dysfunctional, impacting our postu...re, pain, healing ability, and mobility. Within this fascial train (the patterns of tissue throughout the body pulling on muscles, tendons, bone, there are sensors. We aren’t always able to recount what these sensors are telling us, and that’s not a bad thing, since we don’t want to be inundated with sensory messages, yet when our attention is bought to these trains and patterns, we become aware of them and can correct them. How are you sitting at the moment? Are you leaning forward? Where is your chin in relation to the centre of your body? Is your chin tilted back or slightly tucked under? Where is the tension in your body stored currently? Your jaw? Your hands? Etc. These fascial trains and patterns can restrict movement of the muscles and tissue underneath. The fascia can tighten around areas of the body and without the ability to release, will hold dysfunctional patterns firmly in their place. The force transmission of this connective tissue requires disruption to shift the strength in a more functional direction. There are particular techniques that can mobilise these functional patterns/anatomy trains, liberating the tissue around and within the muscle to enhance recovery, rehabilitation, increasing movement and reducing pain. We are always ‘training’ our fascia whether we are conscious of it or not. Bringing an awareness to clients in relation to their fascia assists them in re-training the connective tissue so it works best for you.
