We need to help repair their skin barrier, manage the inflammation present at the level of the skin as well as look after their general skin and coat health to prevent future flare ups.

21.01.2022 Dental Scale & Polish with Canine Cowboy Cowboy was is a brave patient who visited My Pet Hub for a dental scale and polish procedure. Before the procedure, Cowboy suffered from smelly breath, thick plaque and calculus build up with mild gingivitis. During the procedure, his teeth were examined to count the number of teeth, ensure there was no damaged or missing teeth and the gums didn't have an large pockets that debris (food, grass, ect) could get into to cause issues.... Next, the Vet performed dental radiographs to ensure the teeth were internally healthy - including the roots of the teeth, ligaments, bones, and more. His X-rays showed his mouth was healthy and no extractions were necessary. Cowboy's teeth were then descaled with the ultrasonic scaler to remove the calculus, plaque and tartar formation. His teeth were then polished using the low speed polisher to smoothen out any rougher edges caused by the scaler and his mouth rinsed free of the paste. After his procedure, he left with homecare information to maintain good oral health at home and a minty fresh smile.

17.01.2022 What........I have a grease gland? Guinea pigs have a grease gland located just above their tail bone. Grease glands secrete oil that guinea pigs use to mark their territory. Both boars and sows have grease glands. In some guinea pigs the grease gland can be more active, generally boars. While the grease gland does not usually cause any problems, it is advisable to check your guinea pigs grease gland on a regular basis. If they have a more active grease gland, the oil they produce can build up which can lead to impaction or infection of the grease gland. If you notice an increase in greasy coat or skin in this area it is advisable to clean off the grease with coconut oil and then bath in unscented soap such as a natural animal shampoo (either guinea pig specific or for small animals).

14.01.2022 Hypercarnivores Cats are known as obligate carnivores or hypercarnivores. This means they must eat meat as part of their diet and that generally it will be at least 70% of their diet. Other hypercarnivores include crocodiles, owls, dolphins, snakes and all the big cats. Cats cannot be vegetarian or vegan as they must eat meat to be able to obtain some essential amino acids, fatty acids and vitamins that cannot be obtained from plants. It is important to note however that a pu...re meat diet is also deficient in nutrients, particularly calcium, and can lead to health issues. The best way to ensure your cat is getting everything it needs is to feed a commercial diet that is balanced for their life stage or, if you are particularly dedicated to raw feeding to have a diet properly formulated and balanced by a veterinary nutritionist so they are not at risk of any deficiencies.

09.01.2022 Trivia Tuesday Answer... TAPEWORM WEAR THEIR STOMACH ON THE OUTSIDE. Tapeworms dont have a gut of their own. Instead, they use their specialised outer surface to absorb nutrients and excrete waste....and they do it pretty efficiently. ... Your small intestine has finger-like bumps called villi that basically add more intestinal surface, creating extra space for absorbing food. Tapeworms are also covered in little villus-like bumps that help them soak up more of whatever their host is eating.

05.01.2022 Litter trays Cats are usually super easy to toilet train as they instinctively want to hide their excrement and they learn by following their mothers example. It is quite common though to encounter cats who toilet outside of the litter tray. This can be a behavioural issue or a medical issue so it is important to have your cat checked by a vet if you do see toileting issues. Behavioural issues occur for a number of reasons but often it is simply because your cat doesnt like... the litter tray you are offering them. Here are some tips for giving them a desirable toilet; - size: it should be big enough to fit them in completely (including their tail), lots of trays are too small, consider getting an underbed storage crate to use as a tray - covered or not: this is completely up to your cat, offer both options and see what they choose - type of litter: again this is your cats choice, you may need to offer 3 or 4 different trays with different types of litter to figure it out - multiple trays for multiple cats: as a rule of thumb 1 tray per cat plus 1 extra - multiple locations for multiple cats: dont put all the litter trays next to each other, cats dont want to chat while they are going to the toilet - away from high traffic areas: you wouldnt want the whole family staring at you while you go to the toilet - ability to escape: especially if you have more than one cat, make sure the tray is in an area that your cat can get away from easily if it wants to with multiple escape routes - cleaning: trays need to be scooped at least 1-2 times daily and should be fully cleaned at least weekly, avoid using any strong smelling disinfectant
