17.01.2022 Can you share your home with a person with a disability? Homesharing might be for you Have you ever considered sharing your home with a person with a disability? My Place Foundation is looking for a couple or single woman who would be willing to include and support a young woman in her early twenties, in your home and family life. A northern suburbs location is required and regular respite is provided. Jane (not her real name), who has autism and an intellectual disability i...s a delightful young woman who is full of energy and loves to keep active out and about in the community. She keeps busy during the week with a team of support workers who assist her to participate in a range of activities. These include a volunteer position as well as her own small business making biscuits for local community members and meetings. Although her verbal communication is limited, Jane loves to be a part of any social activities and loves interacting with people. She also enjoys going swimming at the beach or pool, going dancing, for long bush or beach walks and picnics. You don’t need to have previous experience supporting a person with disability, but you do need to be genuine in your desire to share your home and be prepared to work to make a positive difference by enriching someone else’s life, as well as your own. My Place is an organisation that works in partnership with each person with a disability to pursue the lifestyle of their choice and to have their individual needs met by people they choose and trust. This support promotes opportunities for people with disability to become a valued and contributing member of their community. Home-sharers are not employees of My Place but are rather engaged in a similar way to foster carers. This allows My Place to offer a generous tax-free reimbursement for having someone with a disability live with you. My Place will provide any training required for you to care for the individual’s needs, and will provide you with ongoing support from one of our Coordinators. If you are interested in finding out more about this opportunity, please contact Joanna Jahn, My Place coordinator, on 0455 075 133.
