11.01.2022 My wife Jo calls me hyperactive. For much of my life I did self-medicate to slow down the crazy pace of the life that I had manufactured. I began yoga when Ch...ris Lalor, my yoga teacher, was teaching at the Senior Citizens hall at Coconut Grove. I found it 'took the edge off' slightly and helped to stretch out cantankerous parts of my back. I went in and out of yoga practice over the years but always eventually returned because I knew that it is what my body needed. Then around 2007 I went from leading a very full life to total kidney failure and dialysis in the space of 3 months. The intervening 11 years have seen numerous hospitalisations, surgeries and brushes with mortality - interspersed with bouts of depression and anxiety. I have always returned to yoga where Chris and Emanuelle have patiently guided me with their vast knowledge of complex body issues. More recently, more Flametree teachers, Belinda and Richard, have joined the fray. Yoga gives me an anchor point in life where I can stretch and strengthen the physical body while learning to still the mind. My practice helps me think more calmly and rationally so I am better able to roll with the constant obstacles and rapid changes that my life invariably presents. By Rob Smith, Tales From The Tinny, Darwin Rob also kindly gave us permission to tell you more about himself. Here it is. Rob Smith, co-host of ABC’s Tales From The Tinny (which is about Top End fishing), and his partner Jo, have been regular students at Flametree Yoga Studio for many years. He comes to regular yoga classes as well as Flametree’s "Yoga For Health " classes. Rob has an autoimmune condition that led in 2007 to total kidney failure and the need for ongoing renal dialysis to clean the blood in the way that the kidneys do for the rest of us. Jo donated a kidney for transplantation in 2009 that unfortunately failed quite rapidly, so Rob is faced with renal dialysis for life. Since 2010, he has been dialysing nocturnally at home long and slow dialysis overnight. He is a passionate advocate of this form of treatment and recently produced this acclaimed video to spread the word. Rob's attitude, action and hope is inspirational and in the video In the video he has a bit of fun with the Bee Gees "Staying Alive". In our conversations with Rob, in what he has written, and in our time working with him in class, we see he has gotten a lot from yoga. Everybody gets different things from yoga, depending on what they need and want, but many of the benefits that Rob has received are very useful for anyone. Although his situation is more far more acute than average, we notice how much yoga has contributed to Rob’s ability to survive. He talks about this more in the video, including his vital theme of Staying Alive. In a world where there is far too much depression and even self-harm, Staying Alive says it all. Rob’s attitude also helps all of us have more gratitude for our own situations. By way of background, Rob is a so-called A-type personality (or pitta in yoga terms). He does a lot, with great energy and passion, and sometimes manic application! A major contribution that yoga has made to Rob, and that teachers at Flametree have worked with him about, was to cut down on doing more than he should! This lesson is applicable to everyone. In this Western world, we often tend to stress out and push ourselves too much, and this has the many health consequences we see all around us. We do, do, do until some part or parts of our body or brain gives up on us sometimes without warning! In Rob’s case, in the early days after he had started yoga, Rob would do things like come to yoga after cycling many fast kilometres on his mountain bike, feeling totally exhausted! He, like many of us, thought will power would do it all. He knows now the power of taking life at a better pace where he still achieves hugely such as running one of Darwin’s most popular and famous radio shows. Yoga helped Rob quieten the endless chatter and activity of his active and creative mind, and taught him to relax and seek calm. Yoga also stops him overdoing it. He has learnt to do yoga poses that activate the so-called parasympathetic nervous system. This part of the nervous system calms you, in contrast to the flight or fight part of your nervous system. Too many of us live with the ancient flight or fight nervous system almost always activated. In turn, that leads to overeating, blood pressure, stroke, aggression, snappiness, and more. In the process of his yoga journey, Rob has become more observant of his actions on his physical self, and what it is appropriate to do, and not do. Of course, with the many operations that Rob has had, and the scar tissue from them, plus the ongoing dialysis, pain management is critical. Everything hurts! Yoga has helped a lot here too. Yoga has, as it does with almost everyone, taught Rob another way of being. There’s also the almost mundane (but critical) skills that yoga has taught Rob, like being able to breathe easier. Yoga opens the lungs for all of us, by getting us to have a straighter posture, and to breathe slower and deeper. More oxygen is calming and helps many aspects of your health. For Rob, fishing was an ongoing way to relax. But with the need for regular dialysis, he could not do long bush stints anymore. Instead, yoga now gives him that ongoing way to relax. It is a new and powerful way for him to unwind. Rob has lost a lot from his condition, but yoga gave him something new that he did not have. It is something he will have for life, that has many benefits that even his beloved fishing could not provide. Rob uses both normal and restorative yoga poses. The restorative poses are especially good for calming and de-stressing. They use props so positions can be held longer, allowing you to get even more benefits from them. Like all poses, restorative poses target particular glands that release powerful natural chemicals into your bloodstream. In summary, some of the benefits Rob has got from yoga are calming, intentionality, relief from anxiety, pain management, stress reduction, fitness, exercise, strength building, and relaxation. https://bookyoga.com.au/flametree/beginners-earlybird-yoga/
