11.01.2022 See message below from QLD Human Rights Commission. The Commission is very concerned to see the names and photos of two young women accused of breaching COVID restrictions published by media outlets this week. Weve already heard today from members of the African community today who are beginning to experience a backlash - abusive text messages, social media harassment, and concerns for their physical safety. ... In the words of our Commissioner, Scott McDougall: I understand that people are frustrated and angry and fearful of another wave of infections. We can be angry at individuals for disregarding the rules, for being dishonest or reckless or putting other people at risk. But we cannot allow this to create a second wave of COVID-related racial hostility. The actions of just two people cannot and should not be used as an excuse to harass or abuse an entire community the vast majority of which has, like the rest of Queensland, tried to comply with the rules, says Mr McDougall. We need to take care of ourselves and each other and prioritise the safety of our communities. We are stronger together. Our full media statement is available at https://www.qhrc.qld.gov.au/about-us/media/. If youve experienced harassment or abuse, you can report it to us online at https://www.qhrc.qld.gov.au/complaints/report-racism or call our enquiry line to discuss your complaint options: 1300 130 670.

11.01.2022 MYQ members standing in solidarity with the #Torresstrait8 and their fight for climate justice. On Sep 29th the #Torresstrait8 submitted their legal response to the UN against the Australian federal government over human rights and their climate inaction. This is the first claim of its kind in the world. The Torres Strait Islands lie off the northern tip of Queensland and are home to Indigenous cultures that have nutured and guided Torres Strait Islanders for generations. R...ight now, king tides, erosion and coral bleaching are threatening this connection and Torres Strait homes while the Australian government refuses to address the climate crisis. Eight Torres Strait Islanders are taking their case to the UN, demanding Australia rapidly reduce our emissions, and an immediate resourcing of adaptation measures. You can stand in solidarity with the #Torresstrait8 and build momentum for their claim by signing the petition and sharing Torres Strait stories with your networks. 10.01.2022 A statement from our MyQ Youth Council Leadership Team: As multicultural young people we acknowledge that the land on which we have sought refuge or migrated to belongs to First Nations people - the rightful custodians of these lands, skies and waters. We recognize the long and traumatic history of this land and the many inhuman acts that continue to oppress Indigenous people. Although our histories aren’t comparable, we see the parallels and intersections of our own communi...ties’ experiences here in So-called Australia. As a youth council focused on advocating for the rights of multicultural communities we pledge to educating ourselves and our communities, to hold ourselves accountable and to speak up and show up for the issues effecting Indigenous people. We write this message, not to just be another black tile, but to promise that we will do better. So- called Australia always was and always will be sacred Indigenous land.
