There are a number of genes that are associated with melanoma, particularly if there is a family history of melanoma. If there are a number of direct relatives (first degree) and/or a number who have had multiple primary melanoma, there is a strong chance there may be a genetic predisposition. Genetic testing is unlikely to change the management, which will be careful, regular skin and mole examination. Therefore, specific tests for gene changes has limited value. 07.01.2022 What are the types of Melanoma? There are two forms of skin cancer: melanoma and nonmelanoma. Melanoma is classified according to differences in the appearance and behavior of the lesion. There are four different types:... Superficial spreading melanoma (the most common) is the most often seen in young people. It grows along the top layer of the skin for some time before penetrating more deeply. The first sign is a flat or slightly raised, discoloured patch that has irregular borders and is somewhat asymmetrical in form. Lentigo maligna melanoma - found most commonly in the elderly, it appears as a flat or mildly elevated mottled tan, brown or dark brown discolouration. It generally arising on chronically sun-exposed , damaged skin on the face, ears, arms and upper body. Acral lentiginous melanoma usually appears as a black or brown discoloration under the nails or on the soles of the feet or palms of the hands. It tends to advance more often because it is detected later. It is the most common Melanoma in African-Americans & Asians and the least common among Caucasians. Nodular melanoma is the most aggressive of the melanomas. It is recognised when it becomes a bump. It is usually black, but occasionally is blue, gray, white, brown, tan, red or skin tone.
