24.01.2022 Interesting article. It shows how English has borrowed so many words from other languages and how the pronunciation of words has changed so much over time. No wonder English pronunciation and spelling is so variable. Check these words from list that are often mispronounced: Avocado /æ.vk.do/ - check your word stress. It’s on the 3rd syllable - a.vuh.KA.dow. ... Robot /ro.bt/ - many people miss the /o/ diphthong in this word. Check you get the /o/ vowel in the first syllable. The first syllable is stressed. While we’re on the topic of /o/ - check your pronunciation of ‘motor’ too the vowel in the first syllable is also the double vowel /o/ /mo.t/ Phony /foni/ - check your /o/ diphthong vowel in the first syllable. The stress is on the first syllable and of course the ‘ph’ makes /f/. Assassin /sæ.sn/ - check your word stress. It’s on the 2nd syllable. Enjoy It! x Georgie

17.01.2022 Hi there You can use this video to revise all the consonant sounds in English. Keep note of which ones you think you might be mispronouncing. You can record and practice each sound and compare with a native speaker here: https://www.speechactive.com/english-consonants-ipa-intern/ REMEMBER TO focus on good long & double vowels as you go and good word stress in the multi-syllable words. In the IPA, double / diphthong vowels have 2 mouth positions and long vowels are shown wi...th /:/. Be kind to yourself over the coming weeks and stay well. x Georgie

16.01.2022 More fun things to ponder. Mercedes - /mse.di:s/. Check you are making a good /e/ diphthong vowel in the 2nd syllable - this is also the stressed syllable. 'merSAYdees'. You'll hear many native speakers shorten this to 'merc' - pronounced /mk/. eg. She drives a mercedes.... Is that a merc? Pacific Ocean - /ps.fk o.n/ First thing to check with any multi-syllable word is that you are putting the stress on the right syllables. - puh.SI.fik.OW.shuhn. Note the two schwa vowels in the first and last syllables. Check your /o/ vowel in 'ocean'. This is a compound noun. In compound nouns, the stressed syllable in the first part has slightly more stress than the compound noun in the 2nd part. eg. in Police Officer. /plis f..sr/ LEES in puh.LEES has even slightly more stress than 'o' in 'officer'. While I love people in our Speech Active community thinking about their pronunciation, I hope it isn't keeping you awake at night Have a great day Georgie

12.01.2022 Thai, Vietnamese, Burmese, Cantonese and Mandarin don't have consonant clusters like in English. This means that pronouncing English clusters can be challenging. It's just so different! Consonant Clusters are really important for clear English for clarity and grammar: - past tense endings (look vs looked /lkt/) - plurals (report vs reports) - 3rd person (ask vs asks)... - to tell one word from another (eg deck vs desk) Learn more about consonant clusters and practice improving your own consonant clusters: https://www.speechactive.com/english-pronunciation-consona/ Have a wonderful day. 07.01.2022 Love this pic. Do most native speakers pronounce 'restaurant' with 2 or 3 syllables? There are quite a few English words where we omit a syllable. ... It's not important for speech clarity, so it's not something you need to do if your focus is to be clearer.
