23.01.2022 Welcome back to all of our school kids and their parents! Some of our own small people began their school journeys this year, and what an emotional and anxious day it was (for us!). Communication and literacy issues in the school-age child can sometimes be less obvious than in the little ones. If you notice a change in your child's behaviour as they progress through school, find that they avoid reading/writig tasks, struggle to follow verbal and/or written directions, or are not coping socially, we may be able to help. If you are concerned about your child's communication and/or literacy, please contact us for an informal chat. More than anything, at My Speech and Language, we are passionate about helping all of our children to be the best version of themselves they can possibly be.

01.01.2022 What a busy first month at MySAL! We have been based at our partner organisation, North Lakes Kids, where we have been screening the pre-prep students to ensure their speech, langage and phonological awareness skills are all set for the start of their prep year in January. Four to five year olds should be able to; * enjoy stories and answer simple questions about them. ... * hear and understand nearly everything that is said (within reason) at home or at pre-school or day care. * speak clearly and fluently in an easy-to-listen-to voice. * construct long and detailed sentences ("We went to the zoo but we had to come home early because Sally wasn't feeling well"). * tell a long, involved imaginative story sticking to the topic, and using "adult-like" grammar. * pronounce most sounds correctly, though he or she may be lisping as a four year old, or, at five, still have difficulty with "r", "v" and "th". * communicate easily with familiar adults and with other children. * tell fantastic, dramatic, inventive, "tall stories" and engage strangers in conversation when you are out together (From Bowen, C. (1998). Ages and Stages Summary: Language Development 0-5 years. Retrieved from http://www.speech-language-therapy.com/ on 21.09.2016). If you are concerned about your child's speech or language, or would like to know more about free screening sessions for our partner organisations, please contact us - [email protected].
