19.01.2022 Harnessing the power of martial arts to empower women More than 20 traditional martial arts clubs so far from Australia and the United States including severa...l throughout WA have come together to throw their collective weight behind a unique project designed to empower women. Pink Belt Project provides women in need particularly those healing from the trauma of domestic abuse and/or sexual assault with a one year scholarship, allowing them to train for free at their local martial arts club. Scholarships are provided through a combination of crowd funding and martial arts instructors like who agree to sponsor a scholarship and cover expenses such as uniform, belts and membership fee on behalf of a selected scholarship recipient. Pink Belt Project was started in 2018 by South West Black Belt mum Kristy Hitchens who discovered for herself when she started Taekwondo at age 40 how the style of training provided a unique combination of health and well-being benefits that went far beyond the expected lessons in self-defence. Five women across Australia completed 12-month scholarships in the project’s first year with another 20 commencing training under a Pink Belt Scholarship in 2020. Fundraising and a publicity campaign is now underway to help as many women as possible in 2021. Scholarship applications open on October 1 with positions available in various locations around Perth as well as Port Kennedy, Mandurah and Bunbury at both Taekwondo and Karate clubs. That's how many women healing from the trauma of domestic abuse and/or sexual assault have this week received news they are about to embark on a p...otentially life-changing journey in 2021. Gifted with one year of free and empowering martial arts training within their local communities thanks to fundraising and the mind-blowing generosity of club owners across Australia. When I launched my third annual fundraising campaign for Pink Belt Project in July, I had very little expectation of what impact could be achieved this time round due to the NSW bushfire crisis in January and then the devastating blow delivered by Covid-19. Little did I know in the face of adversity, the martial arts community simply shrugs. And rises to the challenge. Pink Belt Project raised more and had more martial arts clubs come forward in support than any other year. It's difficult to find the words that would amply convey my gratitude. Simply, THANK YOU. 16.01.2022 Yet another of the supporting clubs from 2020 have stepped forward to again offer a scholarship at their club in 2021 bringing the total number of scholarships ...now available in Australia and overseas to 27!!!! Sincere thanks to Instructor John at JUNEE Taekwondo - South East Australian TKD who has been a passionate advocate for the project and an absolute treasure. Given these very tough economic times and the enormous blow that many martial arts clubs have taken this year, it is simply mind-blowing to achieve this level of support and is an active demonstration of the martial way.
