18.01.2022 I have recently read several posts from experienced and successful breeders in various breeds who are bemoaning the decline of their breeds, placing the blame o...n a new generation of breeders who either lack knowledge or whose prime incentive is commercial gain. If a breeder’s main reason for breeding is making money we have to accept that they feel no responsibility to the breed, its health and welfare or maintaining its Breed Standard. Such people will never consider their lack of knowledge an impediment because they feel no obligation to the breed. They will always be a thorn in the side of the dedicated breeder who is constantly aiming to improve their stock as in the eyes of the puppy-buying public (who seldom carry out sufficient research) a puppy is a puppy. Those breeders who think breeding a winner is simply a matter of mating a winning bitch to a winning dog are another matter. They fail to realise the value and implications of the pedigree and do not understand what a valuable breeding tool this is. However you need to be able to READ a pedigree and this is where the truly great breeders score. The pedigree form supplies a lot of valuable information provided the reader has researched the dogs who appear in it. They will study a pedigree (of at least five generations) and - if they do not know all the dogs in it personally they will research them through either seeking out photographs or simply by asking the older breeders who are still around exactly where these dogs scored and failed. In this way they build up a comprehensive picture of their dogs’ ancestry. They will over a period of time be able to assess what faults and virtues lie behind their breeding stock and establish which dogs were responsible for producing them. They will analyse the level of line-breeding and consequently determine which dogs have the greatest influence on their own. With this information they will be in a position to decide which dogs can be doubled up on when a mating is being considered and which should not. One of the greatest breeders of our time was Marjorie Bunting of Ragus Norwich, Norfolk and Border Terrier fame. Not only could Marjorie take a blank sheet of paper and write out from memory a five generation pedigree, she was able to describe in detail every dog whose name she wrote. She was one of the master breeders. The great breeders also understand that correct is not produced by mating two extremes; rather the potential parent who lacks in one area should be mated to a dog that excels in that failing. As an example, a dog that is slightly straight behind will not produce puppies with perfect rear angulation by mating it to a dog that is hopelessly over-angulated. Its chosen mate should be a dog that has CORRECT angulation. The ability to read a pedigree is an art and is something that can be learnt in time. The pedigree form is not just a piece of paper it is something that can be the keynote to a breeder’s success. See more

08.01.2022 SO JUST HOW LONG DO YOUR PET’S SHOTS LAST? Definitely longer than a year! According to the top pet immunologist (aka vaccine expert) in the world, Dr. Ronald Sc...hultz, Ph.D. Annual revaccination provides no benefit and may increase the risk for adverse reactions. What the heck are adverse reactions (or side effects)? Well according to the other rock star pet immunologist Dr. Jean Dodds: Side effects from dog vaccinations can occur anywhere from instantly up to several weeks or months later. Vaccines can even cause susceptibility to chronic diseases that appear much later in a dog’s life (Dodd, 2001). Severe and fatal adverse reactions include: Susceptibility to infections. Neurological disorders and encephalitis. Aberrant behavior, including unprovoked aggression. Vaccines are linked to seizures. Distemper, parvovirus, rabies and, presumably, other vaccines have been linked with poly neuropathy, a nerve disease that involves inflammation of several nerves. (Dodds,2001) SO HOW LONG EXACTLY DOES YOUR PET’S VACCINE LAST? According to the recommendations of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), (basically the dudes who set the standards for the vets): Among healthy dogs, all commercially available [core] vaccines are expected to induce a sustained protective immune response lasting at least 5 yr. thereafter Here’s the breakdown of the core vaccines from Dr. Ronald Schultz: Minimum Duration of Immunity for Canine Vaccines: Distemper- 7 years by challenge Parvovirus 7 years by challenge Adenovirus 7 years by challenge Canine rabies 3 years by challenge The moral of the story here, if you have no idea when your pet is due or has been vaccinated, then just run a titer test and this will confirm if you are due, rather than over-vaccinate your poor pet, setting the stage for future problems! What’s a titer test? A titer test (pronounced tight-errr) is a laboratory or in-house veterinary test measuring the existence and level of antibodies (necessary to fight off disease) in your pet’s blood. Basically, it’s a test that will tell you whether or not you actually need to vaccinate your pet. It’s also super useful when making a decision about vaccinating a pet with an unknown vaccination history, or for determining if pets have received immunity from vaccination. Vaccinating your pet is super important so don’t lose the overall message here: VACCINATE, JUST DON’T OVER-VACCINATE! According to Dr. Dodds: Vaccines have achieved many important benefits for companion animals, and has saved more animals' lives than any other medical advance. Want more on titer testing? When pet owners know better, they will only do better!"

07.01.2022 This is to be in our next Auction in September.

02.01.2022 Sadly one of our breeder members lost a pup they bred last week to Tetnus. It is a timely reminder of what tetnus can do. Maybe if we live in areas such as horse| farming| or take our dogs out to fields for a run and exercise a Tetnus shot maybe worth the effort. We all have dogs who dig holes and often when they are teething the bacteria can get into their system. I know I get Tetnus shots for my dogs as I live in a Horse racing area and my Dr insists that I keep my own up...Continue reading
