05.01.2022 Letter sent to the Archdiocese in Redfern & Greek media outlets. Hi Whom it may concern I am writing to you on what I, along with many others, experienced yest...erday at Saint Raphael Nicholas and Irene Greek Orthodox church in Liverpool. On Sunday 8th November, on behalf of the Mytilenian Brotherhood of Sydney, I organised a church service to commemorate the 108th anniversary of the liberation of our island Lesvos. Our committee and members attend the service every year. This year, being a different one due to covid 19 restrictions, I was made aware that the limit inside the church was 120 and it was on a first in basis. We arrived at 8am and I was standing on the church grounds and outside the church. I was approached by a committee member who asked if I had signed in as there were only five places left. I signed in along with another four. To my amazement another committee member came out of the church holding chains and padlocks and proceeded towards the gates and locked both entrances to the church. I then approached him and asked him is that the committees policy to lock the gates ? He replied that he was following the Government's policy. Soon after another two of our members and two elderly women arrived and were pleading with him to let them in. He stood firm and didn't let them in. I was furious and approached him once again and told him that this ridiculous and to let them in and that there is no consistency between churches. You can't have one rule here and different rules at other churches. I told him that I would be reporting this to the Archdiocese in Redfern and that your committee is driving people away from the church. The four people outside the gates said they would leave and for me not to worry about it. At the same Father Prohoros was awaiting the arrival of the new Bishop and saw that I was furious and stepped in and told the committee member to let the people in. The committee member was so irate that he went back inside the church and stormed out a few minutes later to be heard saying " I am leaving". I don't understand why the gates need to chained up I agree that there is a limit allowed inside the church, but after the 120 limit is reached the other parishioners can stand outside the church and a committee member being the Covid Marshall can make sure social distancing is adhered to. In closing, I ask that the Archdiocese overturns this committee's ridiculous decision of padlocking the gates and to allow parishioners on the the grounds to partake in the church service.
