01.01.2022 *** MYUNA BAY UPDATE *** The future of Myuna Bay Sport and Rec Centre will remain in limbo for another two months after an independent review could not determin...e the actual likelihood of the Eraring ash dam wall being broken by an earthquake. This is extremely frustrating news, but not entirely unexpected. I now have a copy of the independent review. It found that, yes, an earthquake could damage the ash dam wall and that could have catastrophic impacts on Myuna Bay, the lake, and anyone using Wangi Road. We already knew that! If an asteroid hit the ash dam we could assume a similar result! The issue has always been about the chances of that happening. I believe that chance is extremely low and did not warrant the immediate closure of the centre. There is a degree of risk in everything we do, but we don't shut everything down on the basis that an earthquake or cyclone might randomly impact the building we're in. The Minister has done the right thing here and ordered a full risk analysis, but it means we'll be waiting another two months for a result. I remain absolutely committed to seeing Myuna Bay reopened, and absolutely committed to seeing Origin Energy fix its ash dam wall, clean up its own backyard and compensate the Myuna Bay centre.
