24.01.2022 Junior Chamber International (JCI) Brisbane has joined with Southside ART Market to bring an evening of some of Brisbane’s finest emerging artists to BackDock Arts Arts in Fortitude Valley. The debut Brisbane Art Market will feature a gallery showcase and artists selling their art. JCI Brisbane President Alex Beard said the idea for the art market came after a discussion with acting director-general for Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport John Lee. ... We realised Brisbane does not have a strong brand. The river, the Story Bridge and City Hall all came to mind but, nationally and internationally, the city has traditionally stood in the shadow of Sydney, Mr Beard said. The 2032 Olympics is on the horizon so this is a good time to focus on Brisbane’s cultural strengths, things like the bright colours or the tin and timber. The art market will help artists to depict the very real distinctness of Brisbane, and how best to capitalise on our uniqueness. Brisbane has often been looked down on by outsiders, it has been seen as the place of glitz and glamour and not much else. But our city is a beautiful place and has lots of creative people. The city council continues to be very supportive of arts projects. Brisbane’s image is changing quickly now. A panel discussion will be held at 7pm, featuring accomplished Brisbane artists including Tamara Beale and Southside Art Market director Olivia Dean-Jones, with more to be confirmed. Saturday, June 12, 5pm-8.30pm, 103 Brunswick St. Instagram: @backdockarts. Tickets: events.humanitix.com/brisbane-art-market Pictured: JCI Brisbane President Alex Beard holds Tamara Beale’s piece Sable and Canvas while Southside Art Market director Olivia Dean-Jones presents her own work. #brisbanearts #southsideartmarket #JCIbrisbane #fortitudevalleybrisbane #TheValley #brisbanecity #artsbrisbane #brisbaneartists #artmarket #rivercity

19.01.2022 Story Bridge makeover progressing. Restoration of the Kangaroo Point section of the Story Bridge is progressing, with work on the first span above the metered carpark in Wharf St now complete. Work will now progress to the span above Wharf St and then to the span above Baildon St. ... All works include the installation of a scaffolding system, repair and strengthening work as required, the installation of a containment system and surface preparation and the recoating of the steel members. Most of the painting is carried out within an airtight, enclosed space to reduce emissions and waste generated during pressure washing, sand-blasting and coating works. The 777m bridge carries more than 100,000 vehicles a day and has not been completely repainted since it opened on July 6, 1940. Brisbane City Council is spending $11.2 million on stage one of the restoration, acknowledging its heritage status by matching the 4000 litres of paint required with its signature grey colour.
