20.01.2022 Level up your squat by adding a resistance band There are many, many different squat variations out there. Want to try something new? Adding a large resistance band around your hips tied to something behind you is a great way to increase glute activation while you squat.... One primary function of your glute (aka buttocks) muscles is hip extension, where your hips straighten, increasing the angle between your thigh and pelvis, like at the top of a squat. You are also in hip extension while standing, while bending down to touch your toes will decrease the hip joint angle, known as flexion. Increasing resistance around the waist increases the load during hip extension. It's a variation to loading the squat vertically by holding a weight, which will add more load predominantly to your quadriceps muscles.

(Written by Lachlan Townend, MVP Physio) Low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting 7.3% of the population at any given time. To combat low back pain, ‘The Lancet’, published a series of articles on the topic in 2018. To nerds like me, ‘The Lancet’, is one of the oldest and most reputable medical journals out there. ... What were their recommendation for those experiencing low back pain? This may come as a surprise to many of you. The first-line treatment for low back pain is not medication. So, what is it? The recommended treatments included exercise and adjunctive hands on treatment, re-assurance and education about the condition. That is what we do here at MVP, folks. Sadly, in Australia, back pain is poorly managed. Despite the guidelines, only 50% of people with low back pain are prescribed exercise, while the most prescribed treatment is medication (64.5% on first visit), and advice is only provided in 21% of consults.
