25.01.2022 Conservation Chemist Rajani Raj conducts the Photographic Activity Test (PAT) for enclosure materials that will be used for the long term storage of photographs, prints and negatives at the National Archives. The National Archives is the only institution in Australia that conducts the PAT. It examines the chemical interactions between photographic images and their storage enclosures. If a product fails the test, it shouldn’t be used for photographic storage. The test involv...es creating a stack of image detectors, enclosure materials and colloidal silver image interaction detectors. This ‘sandwich’ of detectors and materials is aged in an oven of 700C 1 and RH 863% for 15 days. After ageing, the fading and staining of the original material is measured with a densitometer to determine if it falls within the acceptable guidelines.
