24.01.2022 CLOSED INDEFINITELY Thank you to all my beautiful clients who have supported me at Naamba Holistic Day Spa over the last 5 years. Your calls, texts, emails, flowers and well wishes touched my heart... so very grateful, family. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Naamba Day Spa's doors have closed indefinitely. ... I am sad to say that I do not know if, when or where I will be salon wise, I will, however, keep you all updated with those details when they arise. This news is as devastating to me as it is shocking - and without going into details, the upshot is that this is a forced closure. My deepest gratitude to the community of Mapleton... especially the small hub of businesses in Mapleton Village Views! Your support has meant a lot. Due to the sudden and uncompromising nature of the closure, Iegal action has been necessary and will be ongoing. With a sustained loss of income, and to help raise funds for legal fees, I have started a "Support Naamba" Go Fund Me page (see link below). If you're in the position to help, I would be unbelievably grateful for your donation. I know this last 12 months has been extraordinarily difficult for many of us, so, if you are unable to support monetarily, I ask that you please send your positive thoughts and love. With blessings, Tamara. If inclined, please feel free to share this post with friends and family.

11.01.2022 The mind is much like a tap. It can tighten when in fear which makes the flow of the intuitive self stop. So its important to remember that you are the careta...ker of the handle and can choose to release the flow when you choose and at what pace. People say "But its hard!" Thats because the tap has become rusty from lack of use. You might like to create some etheric salve to loosen it. The salve can be anything that feels soothing to your state of being. While youre being soothed, turn the tap on and let your self become the flow. Blessings (Art: Vladimir Kush)

04.01.2022 Herbs in a Time of Corona (full post) Warning: long post with lots of hopefully useful information. Many people are asking me about what herbs to take, and Im... seeing lots of contradictory information. So I thought Id share my perspective. 1. Remember that no-one really knows. The thing with a novel virus is that we simply dont know. When it comes to the severity, the projected infection and death rates and the best healing strategies, we are all guessing. The World Health Organisation, virologists, pharmaceutical companies, doctors, herbalists: we are all guessing. What advice follows is just this - an intelligent, educated guess, but a guess none the less. Embracing the lack of certainty is an important strategy for mental health here: staying up late at night trawling the web, trying to make sense of CoVid is not only pointless, it is stressful. 2. It does seem pretty serious though. And it definitely needs to be taken seriously. Without going into all the stats (they are available everywhere else), I want to reinforce that it is very important to slow the spread so that our health system can cope. Hand washing, social distancing and quarantining yourself if you are sick are all all important! If you are young and healthy, the major reason to do this is out of love for the vulnerable amongst us - immuno-compromised, homeless, elderly. Here is a WHO doc contrasting CoVid with the regular flu, which I found very helpful: https://www.google.com/url 3. The different stages of disease Its important to understand that infectious diseases have different stages, that require different herbs and strategies. Im lucky to have come across an article by the Chinese herbalists working in Wuhan describing what they are seeing, and the different herbs they are using to treat this illness. Here is the article: https://classicalchinesemedicine.org/report-from-front-li/ The key thing I have understood from these reports is that CoVid is essentially a flu-like illness with fever and cough that can quickly progress to a lung infection with thick, sticky mucus blocking the airways. This is the dangerous part of CoVid, and why people with lung disease are more at risk. STAGE 1: PREVENTION Before you are sick is the time to strengthen the immune system and also condition the lungs, especially if you are a smoker or an asthmatic. Classic immune tonic herbs that are appropriate here are: Astragalus Chinese herb used for centuries to strengthen the qi, immune function and support strong digestion. Especially good for you if you tend to bloating and loose stools. It is sweet, warm, and tonifying. Reishi One of the herbs of immortality, reishi nourishes the heart and calms the spirit, increases the vital force and immune function, and is also useful for coughs and shortness of breath. It is bitter, sweet and neutral temperature. Siberian Ginseng This one is a Russian herb that has been used for centuries by soldiers to increase stamina, energy, stabilise mood and prevent infections. Many clinical trials have backed up the long-term immune strengthening effect of this herb. As an adaptogen, it also helps us to thrive in times of stress. And this is most definitely a time of stress! It is sweet, bitter Elecampane Is a fantastic lung herb that also nourishes immune function and the kidney-adrenals. It is warm, pungent, slightly bitter and dry. Elderberry The black-purple berries of the Elder tree are one of the best herbs for prevention and early-stage treatment of the flu. It works by strengthening the blood and by increasing the immune systems ability to find hiding viral cells in the pre-infection stage. Whether or not it also works for CoVid is unknown. It is sweet, slightly bitter and warming. Ashwagandha This herb is one of Ayurvedic medicines most treasured tonics. As well as being a great immune tonic, it is also very relaxing to the nervous system. It is supremely useful for anxiety, insomnia and stress, which makes it a good choice in this time. It is bitter and sweet. Marshmallow Root This slippery, slimy herb is a classic for moistening and protecting the lungs. It is a good one to take (as powder, glycetract or decoction) if you are prone to a dry cough, or have a history of smoking. It is sweet, slippery and moist. Please note, you do not need to take all of these herbs! Choose the 2 or 3 that feel most appropriate to you, and take them daily for 3 months. Zinc and Vitamin C is also very useful to prevent infection. Similarly, this is a time to use tonifying, strengthening foods, like chicken soup, and improve lung health by some cardio vascular exercise. If you smoke, just stop! If you get CoVid, you will need your full lung capacity. Finally, our mental health is really at risk here. Stress is deeply damaging to the immune system. Remember to do things you love, connect with the garden, and get lots of cuddles in with the dog. Some herbs you can take to support you here are relaxant nervines like passionflower, lemon balm, skullcap, chamomile. Drink these as teas freely, and remember to breathe! CAN WE TAKE IMMUNE STIMULANT HERBS? There have been some reports that one of the ways that respiratory failure is happening is due to cytokine storms, and that therefore immune stimulants are not safe. What is a cytokine storm? I think of cytokines as the fire alarm of our immune system. Sometimes when that alarm goes crazy, it freaks out the immune system and it can damage our own cells. This is one of the things happening with chronic inflammation and with autoimmune diseases. Some immune stimulating herbs have been shown to increase cytokine activity, but please note that most if not all of these studies are using isolated chemicals from a herb and putting them in a petri dish with immune cells. They are not actually doing clinical studies of humans taking the whole herb preparation. This means that this reaction is theoretical at best. This doesnt mean you cant take immune-stimulating herbs. Rather it means you need to take them at the right time. For example, Elderberry suppresses viral reproduction and increases cytokine signaling. This is why is is so useful before or at onset of a viral illness. At the beginning of an illness is when you need the fire alarms (cytokines) to go off to make sure you mobilise all the firefighters (immune cells) early enough. Once the whole building is on fire (the virus is deeply established) then you no longer want that alarm going off non-stop as it is very annoying and can make you do stupid things (like attack your own cells) out of sheer annoyance. A golden rule of thumb is you should never take TONIC herbs (many immune herbs & adaptogens are tonics eg ginseng, astragalus, siberian ginseng, dong quai, ashwagandha) during acute illness. From a traditional medicine perspective, tonics will drive an illness deeper into the body and nourish the strength of the virus. This is why I have suggested immune tonics as preventative, but once someone has symptoms, switching to herbs that are diaphoretic (boost fever response), aromatically move dampness and phlegm, and have an outward moving action (releasing the exterior) is the best bet. Avoid all the herbs listed above once you have any symptoms of any infectious illness. For which herbs to take when you start to get sick, keep reading on! STAGE 2: EARLY STAGE INFECTION When you start to feel sick with the standard symptoms of sore throat, fatigue, possibly mucus congestion etc, you need to switch the herbs you are taking. Please note that this is true of any infectious illness, not just CoVid. At this stage, you will be wondering, Am I coming down with something? Is it a cold? Is it the flu? Is it CoVid? Regardless which of these it is, now is the time to support the body to drive the illness out by increasing blood flow, keeping mucus nice and thin, and increasing the flow of lymphatic fluid. Its important to understand here that a fever is a crucial part of the story. Many of our immune strategies only function properly at elevated body temperature. This means that you are less likely to progress into severe illness if you fever well and do not suppress it with panadol etc. Panadol may be relevant if your fever goes over 40 degrees, but will actually reduce your immune systems ability to rid the body of the virus. There are many studies showing panadol will increase the duration of the flu or a cold by 2-4 days. Ibuprofen has been shown to make symptoms worse for coronavirus. https://www.theguardian.com//anti-inflammatory-drugs-may-a. Hyssop This old European herb is a diaphoretic - the word for a herb that supports the fever response - that is used for bronchitis, fever and flu. It warms and stimulates the lungs, helps expel phlegm, warms the centre and strengthens the lungs. As a warming & stimulating diaphoretic, it helps a fever along, bringing sweat and opening the pores. It is pungent, bitter, warm and dry. Yarrow One of my favourite herbs for increasing circulation and supporting fevers. It is warm-cool, bitter, aromatic and pungent. Thyme Common garden thyme is often used for respiratory infections, including bronchitis. It clears mucus and warms the blood and the digestion. It is pungent, aromatic, warm and dry. Ginger Echinacea As an anti-microbial lymphatic herb, echinacea is great at the beginning of an illness. It both increases and decreases cytokine activity, making it an immune-modulatory herb. It does have anti-viral properties. It is cool, dry and diffusive. Elderflower Another great diaphoretic herb with a long history of use, elderflower is more cooling than the others so will be better if you feel hot than if you have chills. Cool, dry, sl bitter, pungent. As one of the major functions of these herbs is to increase warmth and ideally bring on a sweat, the best way to take these herbs is as a very hot tea. If you are using tinctures, drop 1-3mls into a cup of hot water and drink this way. Rug up, rest, and drink low-protein broths and soups. This phase of treatment is appropriate for about 3 days, then, either the virus has settled deeper into the body, or you have managed to kick it off. If it is the former, you need to progress to the next stage. STAGE 3: SEVERE BRONCHITIS WITH PHLEGM If you are unlucky enough to progress to this stage, (usually after day 3-5 of first symptoms) then you will likely have chest pain and thick sticky phlegm that is hard to cough up or even a dry cough. You may or may not still have fever. The Chinese herbalists in Wuhan are saying that many people with CoVid are also experiencing some degree of constipation or incomplete bowel movements. This complicated matters, because a smooth evacuation of cellular waste is important to ensure the load on the body is as mild as possible. So the herbs that we most want to take here are ones that liquify phlegm, help us to expectorate (cough up), work as lung antimicrobials, and keep the bowels open. White Horehound For centuries in Egypt and Greek medicine, this herb was considered the preeminent herb for congested lung infections. It expels phlegm, relieves coughing and helps fight infection. It also supports better digestive function. Mullein This herb soothes & relaxes the lungs, liquifies thick phlegm and assists in expectoration. It can be used when there is a dry cough or when there is a wet cough. Its considered a lung tonic in many places. It is cool, moist, astringent and bland. Thyme - as above. As a strong respiratory anti-microbial it is useful here, unless you feel hot and have a red face, as it is very heating. Yellow Dock or Dandelion These two herbs are cooling, gentle laxatives that help clear toxins out of the body and support liver function. They are cool, bitter and draining. Andrographis A strong bitter antiviral herb, Andrographis is best used 3-5 days into an illness when it has really taken hold. Although commonly considered an immune herb, it is not an immune stimulator, but rather a regulator of the immune system. As such it can both increase or decrease immune function as required. (Braun & Cohen 2010). It is a cold, bitter, draining, anti-infective herb. Garlic is also a good choice here. You must stay hydrated during infection. Drink plenty of water (warm or cool depending on how you are feeling). Very important - if you or a loved one progress to bronchial infection you most likely need to go to the doctor or even hospital. Take your herbs, but dont replace medical care with herbal medicine! A final thought. I hope this information is of value to you and helps you get a handle on how to best support yourself in this time. For most people, the biggest risk currently is mental health. Six people have died in Australia from CoVid so far, meanwhile, 8 people each day commit suicide. That about 640 this year. Remember to check in on friends with anxiety or depression, and take proactive self-care measures for your hearts wellbeing not only your bodies. Dont forget the fundamentals of good health, both physical and mental: rest, play, food, connection, water, movement. This could be an amazing opportunity to take a stay-cation, and simply have fun creative time with your loved ones. In health, Stephanie.
