23.01.2022 Maize, sorghum, chickpea & sesame trials update from Jack. https://youtu.be/YrDWQQaRMq8

23.01.2022 NACRA is recruiting! We're searching for a research technician / agronomist to support our R&D team. Details in the Seek ad. Apply by Friday 17th July. (By the way, adding Broome on the description is something Seek did automatically! NACRA takes no responsibility for anyone thinking they're applying for a job in the North Pilbara. This is definitely a Kununurra position... just saying!)

22.01.2022 Not a NACRA trial, but a crop grown by one of our greatest supporters.

07.01.2022 ORD FARMER PUBLISHES TROPICAL COTTON RESEARCH Western Australia has produced many Nuffield Scholars in years gone by- but never before has a WA farmer travell...ed the world to research tropical cotton. Luke McKay is the farm manager for Kimberley Agricultural Investment in the Ord Valley, who has just published the research from his time abroad. And with the cotton harvest coming up in the coming months across the north, he's got plenty of insights to share. During my travels, I sought to develop a blueprint for the cotton industry in Northern Australia, but through various meetings with Brazilian farmers, agronomists and researchers, it became clear that a rigid year-on-year production plan in these climatic conditions doesn’t exist, Mr McKay said. Mr McKay outlines several factors that impact cotton production in tropical climates, and the role management plays in adapting to changing growth habits of cotton in the extremities of rain, cloud, humidity, and temperature that occur in Northern Australia. In the report, he reveals that responsibility doesn’t stop at the farm gate, with all growers playing a role in area-wide management for pest, disease and resistance mitigation. To manage evolving scenarios with changing conditions, managers must be constantly assessing the crop and adapting in-crop management methods to ensure sustainability, Mr McKay said. Production plans must also be flexible enough to incorporate the seasonal variability typical to the north. If all stakeholders acknowledge the risks, develop and adhere to best management practice and manage the variables within their control for the betterment of the entire industry, there are great opportunities to develop a productive and profitable cotton industry in Northern Australia." You can read the full report here: https://nuffieldinternational.org//Repo/AU/2018/luke-mckay The Nuffield Scholarship was sponsored by Cotton Australia and the Cotton Research and Development Corporation, which saw Mr McKay visit farms and businesses across 12 countries to research ways to optimise cotton production in variable climatic conditions. : Courtney Fowler

02.01.2022 ORD ON TRACK FOR RECORD CORN HARVEST Farmers in the Ord Valley are expecting their biggest maize season yet, with ongoing drought leaving a gap in supply fro...m the major corn-growing regions in the East. For the past three years growers in the area have operated a joint effort with the Ord River District Cooperative to export the product to the South Korean market for corn chips. There's also a growing demand from local pastoralists in the region to use the product for cattle feed. Kununurra farmer Fritz Bolten, said he expected demand would continue to rise for Ord Valley corn. "We'll have more corn than ever going over there [to Korea], that's due to the drought conditions over east," he said. "We're going to see more and more of it too; this climate variability, these extreme weather events." Mr Bolten said this year's crop was looking promising despite the cold dry season delaying harvest, and he believed maize has an exciting future in the Valley. "The crops look good, the cob and kernel size is exceptional [and] I think this year we've hit a new high," he said. "I think [corn] will end up being a good base crop for the valley. "We've been here nearly 40 years and that's what we've been looking for all this time." A shipment of maize is set to leave Wyndham port next week, with another two expected to head to Korea in the coming months. This builds on growers success in the 2018 season, which saw 20 thousand tonnes delivered out of the port.

01.01.2022 It's World Cotton Day today! Did you know cotton is being grown again in the Ord Irrigation Scheme? The industry is being revived with the help of a new, GM v...ariety produced by Bayer. Pictured is Kimberley Agricultural Investments general manager Jim Engelke ahead of last year's cotton harvest in Kununurra. Do you have a nice cotton picture to share?
