24.01.2022 The National NAIDOC Committee has made the decision to cancel the 2020 National NAIDOC Awards ceremony. The Awards ceremony was scheduled to be held in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) in November. This decision was not taken lightly and was reached in consultations with the Alice Springs NAIDOC Committee and other stakeholders and partners. The difficult decision was made considering the changing and widespread impacts of COVID-19 and the uncertainty of travel restrictions, quaranti...ning, and physical distancing requirements. There will be no national awards announced in 2020 and we will not be replacing the ceremony with an online or virtual Awards event. An important part of recognising our community achievers is to celebrate the Awards in style, by showcasing the winners together and televising the event in partnership with SBS/NITV. This necessary postponement, however, will allow more time for nominating our deadly achievers in each of the 2021 National NAIDOC award categories. 23.01.2022 Congratulations to the Lifeline Canberra Cavalry in the Australian Baseball League (ABL). From 7, 8 and 9 January, The Cavs are currency playing four home games wearing Indigenous jerseys designed by Ngunnawal artist Richie Allan. They are the only team in the ABL to hold an Indigenous game. For Richie, the artwork worn by the Cavs is one step, but he says the conversations the players and community will have also form part of the shared journey.... Indigenous culture is art, and this is one way of integrating that culture into the community because now everyone can wear Ngunnawal art and everyone can be part of the Cavs’ journey and the Ngunnawal journey, Photo: Thomas Lucraft.

16.01.2022 Like so many, we were saddened to learn of the passing of Aboriginal rights champion and political trailblazer John Ah Kit. He was the Northern Territory's first Aboriginal cabinet minister, director of the Northern Land Council from 1984 to 1990 and was executive director of the Jawoyn Association from 1991 to 1995 and a member of the Katherine regional council of ATSIC. In 2007, he was awarded the National NAIDOC Lifetime achievement Award for his decades of work and outstanding contribution to the Northern Territory and to the nation. Our thoughts are with his family and extended families. Vale Jack Ah Kit.

12.01.2022 How good is this! NAIDOC 2020 theme seen from space near Casuarina Senior College in Darwin for #satelliteselfie. We love it!

11.01.2022 The #NAIDOC2021 theme is: HEAL COUNTRY! which calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our ...cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction. Country that is more than a place and inherent to our identity. For generations we have been calling for stronger measures to recognise, protect, and maintain all aspects of our culture and heritage. We are still waiting for those robust protections. This year’s theme also seeks substantive institutional, structural, and collaborative reform something generations of our Elders and communities have been advocating, marching and fighting for. Healing Country means finally resolving many of the outstanding injustices which impact on the lives of our people. It is about hearing and actioning our aspirations which are the culmination of generations of consultation and discussions among our nations on a range of issues and grievances. After 250 years, our children and our future generations deserve better.

11.01.2022 On this day in 1992, the Torres Strait Islander flag was officially presented to the people of the Torres Strait at the sixth Torres Strait Cultural Festival. The flag was designed by the late Bernard Namok Snr from Thursday Island. His flag was the winning entry in a design competition run by the Island Coordinating Council (ICC), a Queensland statutory body representing the Community Councils in the Torres Strait. The flag was adopted at its Council meeting on 24 March 199...2. The flag was created as a powerful symbol of unity and identity for Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year, the Torres Strait flag officially appears of the NAIDOC Poster for the first time. (Thanks to the Namok family and the Torres Strait Island Regional Council) Rest in peace Bernard Namok Snr, your legacy lives on.

03.01.2022 We regret to announce that we have decided to cancel the National NAIDOC Awards ceremony scheduled for Mparntwe (Alice Springs) on Saturday 3 July 2021. The decision was made in consultation with the Alice Springs NAIDOC Committee and our key stakeholders in light of escalating community concerns and emerging issues about COVID-19. Our first priority is keeping our Elders, our communities and our children safe during these uncertain times. After carefully reviewing the situat...ion, we have decided that the most responsible option for us is to limit travel and large group gatherings in Central Australia which could result in community transmissions which will have devastating impacts on surrounding central desert communities. While the face-to-face event will be cancelled in Mparntwe, the National NAIDOC Committee will still be hosting a nationally televised gala event to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s achievements and cultures. More information will be provided on this shortly. As part of this, the Awards Ceremony component of the event will be moved to a soon to be announced location. Attendance will be restricted noting emerging COVID-19 risks. Like many other events and Indigenous festivals - keeping our communities COVID-free has always been our number one priority. The decision while difficult to make - was the right call-in terms of keeping our regions in Central Australia COVID free. We sincerely thank the Alice Springs NAIDOC Committee and Alice Springs community for working closely with us over many months as we worked towards the gala Awards Ceremony in Mparntwe. We are devasted at not being about to facilitate the event on Arrernte Country and we thank both the community and the Alice Springs NAIDOC Committee for working with us over the last 16 months. However, we are working with the Alice Springs NAIDOC Committee and our partners to ensure that we can showcase and celebrate the strength, resilience and vibrancy of Aboriginal people and cultures in Mpartntwe as part of our national televised event. This NAIDOC Week, let’s keep our mob safe by making sure our events and celebrations are held in a COVIDSafe way. Check your State and Territory website for further information. All States and territories have public health measures in place to stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the community.

Events and activities should be held during NAIDOC Week 8-15 November and work with the National NAIDOC Theme for 2020, 'Always was, Always will be'.
