19.01.2022 Wondering why the egg yolks are a little paler than usual? We've received a lot of enquiries as to why the girls are laying eggs with pale coloured yolks, the short answer is a decreased amount of carotenoids due to green feed drying off, along with needing to add a different yolk colourant to the hens feed to ensure the brilliant yellow yolks that our customers are demanding. Improvement in the yolk colour has started to filter through and we hope that by the end of the month you will see a marked improvement. 14.01.2022 Recent conversations with different farming families, and industry bodies have led to this same conversation- why are farmers slow to uptake new farming methods? Were not just talking organic, but holistic grazing practises and a number of other area which have the ability to improve overall viability - My answer to this is "Sometimes what appears to be an easy change, is not so easy. We are not simply talking about using new technology, we are talking about changing lifelo...ng farming practices, and from experience, most 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation farmers also carry on family farming traditions which have been bought through the generations. These farmers are also the ones who are aware of native flora and fauna, who care about the local ecology and who monitor the ongoing health, but you must look at it from outside the square, these same farmers have strong emotional bonds not just with their farms, but also their family knowledge/traditions - to some of these men its like saying "what your father did was stupid, dont do it anymore" - what they need is education (in their own backyard), information on the positives and negatives of farming differently, projections of cashflow changes.... and most of all a geniune belief that they are not leaving their heritage behind, but enhancing it for their kids...." What do you think is the main reason that generational farmers (all farmers, cropping, livestock, horticulture) are often slow to implement changes in management?
