21.01.2022 Listen: https://soundcloud.com//devotionals-from-general-brian-ped ‘Now the Lord said to Abram, Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s hous...e to a land that I will show you.’ (Genesis 12:1) Have you attempted to build something only to have it collapse? Do you remember building a sandcastle on the beach only to see it destroyed by an incoming wave? Or perhaps you attempted to build a shed on your property in order to store equipment, but it collapsed with the first strong storm. Or possibly some other project that you’ve been involved in that hasn’t gone the way you wanted it to. It can be discouraging and disheartening in those moments when the plans don’t go the way we want them to. The inclination to give up is right there in those moments. When God watched his creation project spiral downwards, I wonder what went through his mind. When God watched creatures made in his image refuse to take responsibility, engage in conflict, and seek to make a name for themselves, did he consider scrapping what he had begun? Recall that in chapter six of Genesis we read, ‘The Lord was sorry that he had made humankind on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.’ Grief has a way of discouraging fresh beginnings. However, as we come to the end of the chapter 11 in Genesis, we are introduced to a turning point. Among the descendants of Noah is a man we come to know as Abraham, who is married to a woman named Sarah. Without fanfare, God takes the next step. In grace, God makes a fresh start. At the beginning of chapter 12, God says to Abraham: ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing and in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.’ (Genesis 12:1-3) God makes a fresh start by calling two individuals to leave what is familiar to them, such as family, land, customs and language. God calls them to trust in his promises of land, family and reputation. We aren’t told why God chose Abraham and Sarah. Yet as the story continues we will come to learn that Abraham and Sarah have many commendable qualities. For example, Abraham gives his nephew, Lot, preference for the choice of land; and Abraham will intercede in prayer for Sodom and Gomorrah. But in Egypt Abraham will pass Sarah off as his sister in order to protect himself. Abraham and Sarah jeopardise God’s promises as they journey with God and with one another. However, as the writer of the Book of Hebrews in the New Testament puts it: ‘By faithAbraham set out not knowing where he was going’ (Hebrews 11:8). Abraham and Sarah learn to trust God who calls them into a new future. God doesn’t easily give up on collapsed projects hallelujah! In grace, God takes another step towards the realisation of his purposes. God doesn’t give up on us either, but in grace calls us to serve his greater purpose of blessing the families of the earth. Some of us understand all too clearly the need for new beginnings. Some have lived through the painful experience of a broken relationship and wonder if there can be any future. Some have had to watch their business collapse during this pandemic and wonder what the future might be for them. Some work with those who are seeking to begin again, such as prisoners being released into society, refugees who are hoping for a new beginning in their lives. What might it mean for us to sense God’s fresh beginnings at this time? What might it mean to trust God who calls us to participate in his new beginnings? There have been times in my own life when I have leaned on the words of this song written by General John Gowans: Don’t assume that God will plan for you no more, Don’t assume that there’s no future to explore; For your life He’ll redesign, the pattern be divine; Don’t think that your repentance He’ll ignore. For He gives to those who ask His grace for every task, God plans for you in love for He still cares. (John Gowans, Song Book 490) May God bless you.
