22.01.2022 Deep Creek Sewer Repaired Over the Easter school holidays Nambucca Valley Council staff and contractors worked to repair a leak in a submarine pressure sewage pipe which runs across the bed of the creek between the Valla Beach resort and Hyland Park. The leak was repaired but faecal coliforms in the water body, an indicator of sewage pollution, remained high for an extended period.... The Council is pleased to advise that the on-going water testing indicates that faecal coliforms are now within acceptable limits. Notwithstanding these satisfactory test results, recreational users of Deep Creek should be aware that the estuary is an ICOLL (intermittent closing/opening lake/lagoon) and that water quality can be variable depending on a number of factors including rainfall events and whether or not the creek is open to the ocean. The catchment for the creek does contain potential sources of contaminants including urban runoff, on-site sewage management systems and agricultural runoff. Whilst the Council has programs in place to minimise the risk of contamination it is impossible to declare that the estuary will always have water quality parameters that meet the standards for recreational use. So the public need to be mindful of these risks in their use of the Deep Creek ICOLL. For enquiries please contact Councils Manager Water & Sewerage, Mr Richard Spain on 0418 468 368 or General Manager, Mr Michael Coulter on 0409 153 788

16.01.2022 On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War. From the summer of 1918, the five divisions of the Australian Corps had been at the forefront of the allied advance to victory. Beginning with their stunning success at the battle of Hamel in July, they helped to turn the tide of the war at Amiens i...n August, followed by the capture of Mont St Quentin and Pèronne, and the breaching of German defences at the Hindenburg Line in September. By early October the exhausted Australians were withdrawn from battle. They had achieved a fighting reputation out of proportion to their numbers, but victory had come at a heavy cost. They suffered almost 48,000 casualties during 1918, including more than 12,000 dead. In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the postwar decades.

13.01.2022 National Asbestos Awareness Week 2020 Asbestos lurks in more places than you’d think It is easy to forget that asbestos is still present in millions of Australian homes, but it's a fact that if a house was built or renovated before 1990, there's a good chance it has some asbestos.... Asbestos can be easily disturbed when doing renovations, home improvements and maintenance. National Asbestos Awareness Week, 23-29 November 2020 is a timely reminder to all Nambucca Valley residents to be asbestos aware before they start any work around the home. Asbestos lurks in more places than you’d think. Asbestos is a known carcinogen and inhaling asbestos fibres can cause a number of life-threatening diseases including pleural disease, asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. Asbestos-related diseases cause approximately 4,000 deaths a year. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Australians have increased their love of DIY and are using the extra time at home to do some home improvements and maintenance. But what they may not know is that this work could be putting their health or someone else’s health at risk. Asbestos materials are still commonly found in bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens as well as behind tiles and under flooring. Mayor of Nambucca Valley Council, Councillor Rhonda Hoban OAM said Council is encouraging our residents to make sure an asbestos check forms part of their DIY checklist before they start any home improvements. Research shows that 1 in 5 DIY’ers have encountered asbestos, but only half sought any kind of professional help to deal with it. Additionally, a third admitted to disposing of the asbestos improperly including in their own household bin or in a neighbour’s bin said Cr Hoban Just like plumbing and electrical work, asbestos removal or jobs around the home that might uncover asbestos - are jobs best left to the experts. We are asking our residents to know the health risk and be aware of where asbestos might be found before starting work. .Asbestos lurks in more places than you’d think. concluded Councillor Hoban. www.asbestos.nsw.gov.au is New South Wales’ one stop shop for all asbestos related queries. 08.01.2022 VALLA BEACH ALL-PURPOSE COURTS Anderson Park at Valla Beach is now home to two basketball / netball courts and with the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions for organised sports and outside play, the space is available for everyone to enjoy. The courts were a joint project between the NSW Government, under the My Community Project program, Nambucca Valley Council and the Valla Beach Community Association, (VBCA). ... The idea was submitted by the VBCA, and Council was the sponsor for the application. The project Ball Play at Valla Beach made it through the assessment round, with 3 other projects sponsored by Council, and was then open to the Public Vote process through Service NSW. My Community Project was a program made possible by the NSW Generations Fund. There was an incredible response to the public voting process with over 61,400 people voting for projects across NSW, and there was only a limited amount of funding available in each NSW electorate. Only 2 projects received funding in the Oxley electorate one in Kempsey and Ball Play at Valla Beach. The project was developed with input from the community, and works commenced in late 2019. The final component completed early in June 2020. The courts are a great initiative and only made possible with funding from the NSW Government under My Community Project, and contributions form Nambucca Valley Council and the Valla Beach Community Association. A wonderful collaborative result for our community. Council has received some great positive comments, and we do appreciate all feedback from the community.

03.01.2022 The tennis courts at the Taylors Arm Reserve and the Macksville Tennis clubhouse have had a bit of a facelift after the project was completed to upgrade some of the facilities at both sites. The Taylors Arm courts have been fenced, and the lights upgraded so there can now be night games, and the Macksville Clubhouse ramps, roof, gutters and ceiling were also upgraded. The results look great and the committees are extremely happy with the outcome. The project was developed w...ith input from the two committees representing the community, and developed by Council staff. Grant funding was secured for the project under the NSW Governments Round 2 of the Stronger Country Communities Fund. The Taylors Arm Reserve Committee of Management wasted no time promoting the completion of the lighting upgrade and provided Council with the following feedback: The lights were finished last week, (week ending 19/06/2020), and we went down for the first time on Saturday evening for a few games under lights! Was great to see everyone enjoying a game. Agricultural workers who could not normally get a game in due to work commitments before dark were able to play. This is great feedback and wonderful to see this community infrastructure in use already. Everyone is keen to be out there again now there have been some restrictions eased off.
