19.01.2022 Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Nannup? Your State Library is featuring WA regional towns on its Facebook Page. Its an opportunity to share stories..., old photos and connect with old friends. Recently featured Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Busselton, Mandurah, Wittenoom and Kalgoorlie... The townsite of Nannup is located 280 km south of Perth on the Blackwood River (or 17-20 days by horse and buggy). It is the gateway to the south west, encircled by rolling hills, fertile orchards and the Blackwood River. Prior to the arrival of Europeans the area had been home to the Wardandi, Bibbulmun and Noongar Aboriginal people for thousands of years. The word Nannup is Noongar meaning stopping place. The first European to explore the area was Thomas Turner in 1834. Busselton and Bunbury farming families followed, taking up farming leases in the 1850s and 60s with cattle, sheep and dairy farming. In 1866, a bridge was built over the Blackwood river using convict labour and a police station established. The townsite of Nannup was gazetted in 1890. Agriculture and timber milling became the primary sources of income for the region. These industries of timber and agriculture exist to the present day, with recent diversification into tourism. Today Nannup hosts several events and festivals, the largest being the Nannup Music Festival. The main street has changed little over the years and has considerable heritage value. The movie Drift starring Sam Worthington was filmed largely in Nannup in 2011. Do you have photographs (old and new) that give an insight into its social history? People, places, festivals.. Share them here and they may even be considered for the State Library catalogue. Nannup, Western Australia Nannup Music Festival Nannup . Photos From Around The Area. 02.01.2022 PART FIVE - AUGUSTA TO NANNUP It was fine to get up and see Augusta by daylight. Emily and Kitty's hotel looking out to the mouth of the Blackwood River and the... Southern Ocean. Outside of the holiday season in 1917, the population only seemed to constitute the hotel family, very old residents and their relations. At the time of Emily and Kit’s visit, the good many summer bungalows were shut. The town itself comprising deserted derelict buildings and cottages, silent witnesses of a more prosperous time. Many women in the South West of Western Australia were good riders. Long journeys on horseback were undertaken as a matter of necessity. Forty and fifty mile jaunts to a dance or other festivity were frequent, the party clothes done up in a pillow-case and fastened at the side of the saddle. One of the daughters of the hotel proprietor rode with Emily and Kit to Cape Leeuwin and the lighthouse. After "hollering like mad" finally they caught the Lighthouse Keeper's attention. Mr J J Lyons was an old sailor with a weather beaten countenance. Keen blue eyes, bushy eyebrows, gold-rings in his ears and many tattoos. He spoke of shipwrecks and rescues, in particular the ill-fated Pericles. At the top of the lighthouse on the outside gallery, the force of the wind was terrific. The coastal route to Nannup, involved getting help across the Blackwood river. The horses swum in great style behind the row boats and landed safely on the other side. There was no road on the other side. Guided by the Augusta Hotelkeeper’s nephew Jack, the party took some remarkable twists and turns through the bush. Then along the beach, passing lakes, sand-hills, dingo tracks, kangaroos and even a mob of horses. Turning inland the ride became tougher, through swampy thickets. Some parts so steep, that they had to hang on to their horses necks, to keep them from slipping backwards over their tails! At last they came out on a track, which though rough and obscure, seemed like St Georges Terrace after what they had experienced. A stop at Milyanup Hut for a billy tea, then through the flood plains to Nannup Road. Tired and somewhat lost, they arrived at Nannup late at night, as honoured guests of the Longbottom family. The next morning revealed the beauty of the Longbottom’s garden as described here by Emily... The snowy spikes of the tall and stately Watsonias, toned the vivid splashes of the masses of gay coloured flowers to a perfect harmony. Roses, stocks, wall flowers, geraniums and sweet William, with great clumps of mignonette, making the air fragrant. Fifteen miles on, Emily and Kit arrived in Nannup, halting at the blacksmiths to have Bud’s shoes attended to, before they got on to any metalled roads. They stayed at the Nannup Hotel which was clean and comfortable. Their horses comfortably stabled. Their visit to Nannup included a call to see a dear old lady in a quaint old house. She played violin and piano and when she broke into a waltz, Emily and Kit just had to dance. "Whirling round and round the little room until they were giddy to the sounds of her quavering notes, wonderfully sweet and true.
