Trust that each child is on their own individual timeline and that nurtiring our children is what they n...eed most, so that they can grow into their full potential. We don't need to rush development and the truth is that we can't - if we attempt to we enter into a battle with mother nature and with our kids. We start praising and rewarding external behaviour and our kids pick up on it and start performing and acting as though they're more mature or independent than they truly are. We often underestimate our children's physical abilities (I've got my hand up!) and overestimate their emotional abilities. And our kids IQ and EQ are often on very different trajectories. So, try to meet your child where they are...not where a book says they *should be or where other children of the same age may be. Enter the present moment, parent out of hope not fear and trust that who your child is, is exactly who they need to be. Nurture that and watch them bloom. See more

Lay with your 5 or 8 or 12-year-old as they fall asleep if they need you to (or if you want to!). Hold them close. Forget the milestones and accept the as is of the present moment, the reality of very slow pace of healthy child development. Don't judge or second guess. Flow, don't resist. Snuggle with your toddler. Hug your teen. Let them be little. Let yourself fall deeply in love with this new soul who shares your life. Affection and loving touch cannot "spoil" your child - it is the opposite that's true! We covet independence as a culture, yet we don't fully understand it. If we did, we wouldn't push our children away. We would have a deep knowing that as my friend @dr.vanessalapointe says, It is out of the gift of deep dependence that true independence emerges." 22.01.2022 Such an important reminder x "This is Qasim's 4 month old foot. It was caused by a single strand of hair. Its official name is Hair Tourniquet Syndrome. He is m...y 4th child and I had never heard of such a thing until today. He was seen by his Pediatrician last week, there was nothing there, he was evaluated by his Physical Therapist 3 days ago, there was nothing there. I bathed him yesterday and I didn't see anything abnormal. Then today, I noticed the indentation in his toes and found a small piece of hair but figured no way it could be from that, so I disregarded it. I called right away for him to see the Pediatrician and within 2 hours he was being seen. When the Dr told me it was caused by 1 piece of hair, I was in disbelief. He told me how very lucky we are to catch it so soon because it often results in immediate amputation of the affected appendage. It's most common in infants because of the post-Partum hair loss of the mother. Light colored hair is extremely difficult to identify and surgeons often need microscopes to even see it. 18.01.2022 Reports show that 30% of young children #sleep less than recommended and/or have behavioural sleep problems associated with insufficient sleep. And to date, lit...tle is known about the #neurophysiological response to acute or chronic sleep loss in young children. It is not until age 4 or 5 that most children are able to go happily through the entire day without a nap, and even then, there is large inter-individual variability in the #brain physiology of recovery from missed sleep. Sleep research provides important insights into the neurophysiological basis of vulnerability to sleep loss in early childhood. And it suggests that even through adulthood a midday #nap or rest break is extremely beneficial in reducing the pressure in all human beings. Understanding a concept called ‘homeostatic sleep pressure’ can help you interpret what is really going on in your home or classroom at the end of a long day, when children are fussy and adults are grumpy resulting in stressful interactions. Sleep pressure builds throughout the day. It can be exaggerated by environmental issues such as the previous poor night’s sleep, on-going sleep deprivation, or daily #stress such as the current world climate. This stress is then compounded by each person’s moodiness feeding off the others’, causing contagion of bad emotional affect and adding to ‘homeostatic sleep pressure’ in the person, child and adult alike. Studies have found that quality naps can make up for lost night sleep, but extra night-time sleep DOES NOT make up for missed naps, due to the ‘homeostatic sleep pressure’ concept. Therefore, no matter how a child sleeps at night, their daily naps may be critically important to release the rising sleep pressure that arises from a reduction in the neural-activity-dependent build up of 'homeostatic sleep pressure' during waking times. It may dismay some to hear that brain studies reveal young children may not actually be able to obtain the sleep they need only at night. For some children, daytime sleep may be crucial to satisfying 24 hour sleep need and may also be protective of developmental and health consequences associated with sleep loss. Each child’s behaviour is a key indicator. Daytime napping has been found to be crucial in early memory development. There are also patterns of findings suggesting that night-time sleep and daytime naps are of differing importance in consolidating #vocabulary and other #learning in young children. Importantly, napping in early childhood has evident beneficial cognitive effects far beyond the age of 2 years old, where the many pressures of today’s industrialised lifestyle begin to discourage (or pragmatically, must disallow) daytime sleeping. Every baby and child is different, and individual and household needs vary considerably. Most children continue taking an afternoon nap until ages 3 to 5. The National Sleep Foundation says that newborns need 14-to-17 hours sleep a day; 4 month to 1 year olds need 12-to-15 hours; and toddlers need 12-to-14 hours. Around 30% of children still daytime nap past 5 years old, and some do so into their teenage years, depending on how much information they absorb, how much stress they are under, and what their family or cultural lifestyle allows. Sleep pressure accumulates quickly across the day during early childhood, with the rate of build up declining with age. It is thought that children stop having naps when brain maturity arrives at a point where less neural recruitment is necessary for optimal functioning when some domain-specific specialisation has occurred. Sleep is the price we pay for plasticity. Having insights into the neurophysiological vulnerabilities of sleep loss in early childhood can guide each of us in making better decisions for ourselves and our young charges on a day-to-day basis.
